RUST-PREVENTER FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,804, dated August 28, 1888.
Application filed May 3, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. Woos'rER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rust-Preventers for Fire-Arms, which improvement is fullyset forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for preventing rust in the barrel of a fire'arm, the same embodying a plug adapted to absorb or contain an oil or lubricant and means for retaining the same in the barrel.

B represents a p1ug,which occupies said barrel and has an opening through the same for the passage of a rod, 0, whose ends are screwthreaded for attachment of caps D D, which tighten against the ends of the barrel.
Interposed between the ends of the plug B and the caps D D are washers E, which enter the barrel and are forced by the caps against the plug,so that the latter is firmly held within the'barrcl, while the caps are in close contact with the ends of the barrel.
The operation is as follows: The plug B, which is formed of asbestus or other suitable material, is saturated with oil or lubricating material and inserted in the barrel,thus oiling the same. The rod is then passed th rough the plug and the washers and caps are located, the caps being duly tightened, and thus secured to the breech and muzzle ends of the barrel, whereby the oil or lubricant is prevented from escaping from the barrel and moisture from entering the same, the bore of the barrel being thereby guarded from rust.
For a fire-arm that is to be taken to pieces and placed in a case or otherwise packed, I may employ the form of cap D at the breech of the barrel; but it is evident that such cap may be flush with the end of the barrel and tighten against the shoulder for the cartridge- Sorial No. 272,664. (No model.)
shell, as in Fig. 3, so that the rust-preventing devices may be employed while the fire arm is intact. \Vhen either cap is unscrewed, the remaining parts may be readily removed from the barrel.
For purposes of compactness, convenience of handling, packing, &c., the plug and red are formed in sections, as shown in Fig. 3, the sections of the rod being connected by screwthreaded joints.
The inner ends of the caps are of reduced diameters, so as to enter the barrel, and thus cause proper pressure to be exerted on the plug,whiletheunderportionsofthc cap tighten against the barrel.
If desired, the rod may be dispensed with and the caps made to enter the barrel, so as to be held tightly therein against the washers or plug.
In order to form tight joints at the ends of the barrel, there are interposed between the caps and barrel washers or packing F, of suitable material, the same being held tightly in place by the action of said caps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gun-plug composed of oil absorbing or containing material and provided with caps at the ends thereof adapted to engage the ends of the gun-barrel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The gun-plug B, made of oil-absorbent material, having the end caps, D D, adapted to engage the ends of the barrel, and the rod O,connceting said plug and caps,substautially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The sectional gun-plug B, consisting of one or more parts of oil absorbing or containing material, a sectional jointed rod carrying said plug, and end caps adapted to engage the ends of the barrel, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A gun-plug of oil absorbing or containing material, end caps adapted to engage the ends of the gun-barrel, washers between caps and plug, and a rod in said plug connecting said caps, said parts being combined substantially as described.
