Conventional hydraulic fluids and lubricating oils permit corrosion of metal surfaces in the presence of water. Certain oils used by industry and the military have inhibitors which are designed to provide rust protection but even these have some shortcomings. For one, these oils do not provide adequate protection when systems, such as those in some naval vessels, have large amounts of sea water contamination. Also, they do not provide necessary protection for systems which are inactive for relatively long periods of time. Furthermore. these oils with inhibitors cannot remove the sea water contaminant as quickly as desired.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTlON Accordingly, one object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic and lubricating oil composition.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic and lubricating oil composition which prevents corrosion of metal surfaces.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic and lubricating oil composition which prevents corrosion of metal surfaces which are exposed to fresh water or sea water.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hydraulic and lubricating oil composition which is capable of preventing corrosion of metal surfaces even after inactivity for a relatively long period of time.
These and other objects of this invention are accomplished by providing a composition comprising petroleum oil, 2,6-ditert butyl p-cresol, neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate, polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ether which is the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio of between 3:1 and 7:1, and a constituent selected from the group consisting of sorbitan monooleate and a high molecular weight emulsifier which is a product containing amide and imide functional groups and ester linkages formed as the reaction product of an alkenylated succinic anhydride, a polyethylene amine and a polyhydric alcohol.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODlMENT The hydraulic and lubricating oil compositions of this invention provide corrosion protection when operating hydraulic and lubricating equipment are contaminated with gross amounts of fresh or salt water until such time as the equipment is available for removal of the contaminated oil and replenished with dry, clean oil. The oil of this invention provides superior corrosion protection by using an extremely efficient barrier type corrosion inhibitor as well as by emulsifying the water and preventing it from approaching the metal surfaces. Thus. the composition of this invention prevents corrosion by two mechanisms; i.e., the application of a film of inhibitor on the metal surfaces and encapsulation of the corrosive medium, water, in a stable water-in-oil emulsion.
The composition comprises about 94-97 percent by weight petroleum oil, about 0.3-0.5 percent by weight 2,6-ditert butyl p-cresol, about 2.0-3.0 percent by weight neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate in petroleum oil wherein from 40-60 percent by weight of said constituent comprises pure calcium petroleum sulfonate, about 0.8-1.2 percent by weight of the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol which were present in a ratio between 3:1 and 7:1 and which has a hydroxyl number between 120 and 140, and a constituent selected from the group consisting of about 0.25-0.35 percent by weight sorbitan monooleate and about 0.8-1.2 percent by weight of a high molecular weight emulsifier which is an alkenylated succinic anhydride which contains amide, imide and ester linkages.
The petroleum oil constituent of this invention which constitutes between 94 and 97 percent by weight of the instant hydraulic and lubricating oil composition is actually a mixture of two different petroleum oils. Thus, one constituent of the petroleum oil is made up of from 15 to percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from mid-continent crudes which has a viscosity, in centistokes, of between 33 and 41 at 100F, a viscosity of between 5.2 and 6.0 at 210F and a viscosity index between 100 and 108. The other constituent of the petroleum oil is from 5 to 85 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crudes which has a viscosity, in centistokes, of between and 135 at 100F, a viscosity between 10 and 14 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of 90 to 95. 2,6-ditert butyl p-cresol is also present in the instant composition in a weight percent of about 0.3 to 0.5 and serves as an antioxidant.
Neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate is present in the instant composition in a percent by weight of about 2.0 to 3.0. It is to be understood that within the meaning of this invention the term neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate refers to neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate in a petroleum oil carrier wherein the pure neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate constitutes 40 to 60 weight percent of the mixture. Thus, for example, in lg of the mixture from 0.4 to 0.6 g of pure neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate is present. This constituent serves as both a corrosion inhibitor and an emusifier.
Also present in the instant composition is about 0.8 to 1.2 percent by weight of a polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ether emulsifier which is the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio of from about 3:1 to 7:1 with about 5:1 being preferred. The hydroxyl number of this constituent should be between and 140.
Another constituent of the instant composition is selected from either about 0.25-0.35 percent by weight of sorbitan monooleate or about 0.8-1.2 percent by weight of a high molecular weight emulsifier which is an alkenylated succinic anhydride derivative containing amide, imide and ester linkages. This constituent is actually the reaction product of an alkenylated succinic anhydride which has a molecular weight between about 700 and 10,000 and is preferably between about 1,000 and 2,000, a polyethylene amine and a polyhydric alcohol. As hereinbefore noted this constituent serves as an emulsifier.
The general nature of the invention having been set forth, the following examples are presented as specific illustrations thereof. It will be understood that the invention is not limited to these specific examples but is susceptible to various modifications that will be recognized by one of ordinary skill in the art.

High molecular weight emulsifier which is an alkenylated succimc anhydride derivative which contains amide, imide and ester linkages The neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate in petroleum oil contains 45 percent by weight of the pure neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate. A gluct which meets this requirement is called neutral calcigm petronate" available from Wito Chemical ('0.
This is avai abl from Atlas ChemiEaTCo. under The name SpErTBU J The ethylene oxide: nonyl phenol ratio is 5:1 and the hydroxyl number Is about 126-134. This is available from Atlas Chemical Co. under the name Renex 648.
This is available from Lubrizol Corp. under the name "High Molecular Weight Emulsifier OS-l47l2(".
EXAMPLE 2 The three petroleum oils of Example l are a mixture of two different petroleum oils as follows:
Stock oil l is a solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crudes. It has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 104. A product which meets these qualifications is UR- SA-Pl0 available from Texaco Inc. Stock oil 2 is also a solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crudes. It has a viscosity of about l23.6 centistokes at 100F. a viscosity of about 11.94 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of 92. A product which meets these qualifications is URSA-P- available from Texaco lnc.
Obviously. numerous modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described herein.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A hydraulic and lubricating oil composition comprising l. 9497 percent by weight petroleum oil which is it- 65 self a mixture of l5-95 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from a midcontiof 10-14 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of 90 to 95;
2. about 0.30.5 percent by weight 2,6-ditertbutyl pcresol;
3. an emulsifier consisting of about 2.0-3.0 percent by weight neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate as a 4060 percent by weight mixture in a petroleum oil carrier;
- 4. about 0.8-1.2 percent by weight of the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio between 3:1 and 7:1 and which has a hydroxyl number between 120-140; and
5. about 0.25-0.35 percent by weight sorbitan monooleate.
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ratio of ethylene oxide to nonyl phenol in constituent (4) is about 5:l and the product has a hydroxyl number of 126-134.
3. The composition of claim 2 wherein l. petroleum oil constitutes about 95.8 percent by weight of said composition;
2. 2,6-ditertbutyl p-cresol constitutes about 0.4 percent by weight;
3. neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate has about a 45 percent by weight mixture in a petroleum oil carrier constitutes about 2.5 percent by weight;
4. the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio of about 5:1 which has a hydroxyl number of l26l34 constitutes about 1.0 percent by weight and 5. sorbitan monooleate constitutes about 0.3 percent by weight.

The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroleum oil is composed of about 90 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 11.94 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 92.

The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroluem oil is composed of about 80 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about 20 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at F. a viscosity of about l 1.94 centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 92.

The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroleum oil is composed of about 24 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at.2l0F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about 76 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at 100F, a viscosity of about 1 1.94
centistokes at 210F and a viscosity index of about 92.
Claims (18)
1. A HYDRAULIC AND LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION COMPRISING 1. 94-97 PERCENT BY WEIGHT PETROLEUM OIL WHICH IS ITSELF A MIXTURE OF 15-95 PERCENT BY WEIGHT OF SOLVENT REFINED NEUTRAL OIL DERIVED FROM A MIDCONTINENT CRUDE WHICH HAS A VISCOSITY OF 33-41 CENTISTOKES AT 100*F, A VISCOSITY OF 5.2-6.0 CENTISTOKES AT 210*F AND A VISCOSITY INDEX OF 100-108, AND 5 TO 85 PERCENT BY WEIGHT OF SOLVENT REFINED NEUTRAL OIL DERIVED FROM MIDCONTINENT CRUDE WHICH HAS A VISCOSITY OF 110-135 CENTISTOKES AT 100*F, A VISCOSITY OF 10-14 CENTISTOKES AT 210*F AND A VISCOSITY INDEX OF 90 TO 95;
2. ABOUT 0.3-0.5 PERCENT BY WEIGHT 2,6-DITERBUTYL P-CRESOL;
2. about 0.3-0.5 percent by weight 2,6-ditertbutyl p-cresol;
2. 2,6-ditertbutyl p-cresol constitutes about 0.4 percent by weight;
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the ratio of ethylene oxide to nonyl phenol in constituent (4) is about 5:1 and the product has a hydroxyl number of 126-134.
3. The composition of claim 2 wherein
3. neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate has about a 45 percent by weight mixture in a petroleum oil carrier constitutes about 2.5 percent by weight;
3. an emulsifier consisting of about 2.0-3.0 percent by weight neutral calcium petroleum sulfonate as a 40-60 percent by weight mixture in a petroleum oil carrier;
3. AN EMULSIFIER CONSISTING OF ABOUT 2.0-3.0 PERCENT BY WEIGHT NEUTRAL CALCIUM PETROLEUM SULFONATE AS A 40-60 PERCENT BY WEIGHT MIXTURE IN A PETROLEUM OIL CARRIER;
4. ABOUT 0.8-1.2 PERCENT BY WEIGHT OF THE REACTION PRODUCT OF ETHYLENE OXIDE AND NONYL PHENOL IN A RATIO BETWEEN 3:1 AND 7:1 AND WHICH HAS A HYDROXYL NUMBER BETWEEN 120-140; AND
4. about 0.8-1.2 percent by weight of the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio between 3:1 and 7:1 and which has a hydroxyl number between 120-140; and
4. the reaction product of ethylene oxide and nonyl phenol in a ratio of about 5:1 which has a hydroxyl number of 126-134 constitutes about 1.0 percent by weight and
4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroleum oil is composed of about 90 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about 10 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 11.94 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 92.

The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroluem oil is composed of about 80 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about 20 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 11.94 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 92.

The composition of claim 3 wherein said petroleum oil is composed of about 24 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 36.7 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 5.63 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 104, and about 76 percent by weight of solvent refined neutral oil derived from midcontinent crude which has a viscosity of about 123.6 centistokes at 100*F, a viscosity of about 11.94 centistokes at 210*F and a viscosity index of about 92.
