UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW JACKSON SMITH, OF WHEATLAND, OREGON.
PLow.
SPECIFICATION form/ing part of Letters Patent No. 372,179, dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed April 13, 1887. Serial No. 234,712. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J AcKsoN SMITH, of Wheatland, in the county of Yam Hill and State of Oregon, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesv to tnrnplows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby it may be convertcd by avery simple adjustment either into a single or double plow, according to the use to be made of the same.
Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a plan view, and'Fig. 3 a perspective view of a modification.
A represents the mold board, A the curved iron beam, and A2 A2 the wooden handles, of a common form of .turnplow. rlhe handles areconnected to each other by the cross-bars A3 A5, and said handles are also connected to the beam by brace A4, whose forward end "is provided with a number of holes, c, by which theinclination ofthe handlesmay be adjusted to adapt them to the size ofthe plowman.
B is the mild-board of anotlnr plow, set in advance of A and provided with a curved The beam A of the plow A occupies a truc vertical plane in alignment with the landside of the plow A. (see Fig. 2,) while the beam B of the plow B is offset or bent at b, so that its front end is parallel with beam A, while its rear portion diverges at an angle thereto, so as to throw the plows apart into the lines of their respective fui-rows. At the bend b the beam B is connected to beam A bya connect ing-piece, C, whose rear end .is bolted by two bolts to the front end of beam A', and whose front end is provided with a vertical slot, c, through which a bolt, d, passes to connect the two beams together adjustably.
For connecting the rearportion of' plow and beam B B to the other plow the following system of bracing is employed: A cross-brace, e,
is bolted to the two plow-beams, and the rear per section of this brace, where it connects with the plow beam and handle, is provided with several boltholes in front and a slot in the rear for adjustment. At the front end of the plow-beam is a clevis consisting of perforated plates g g', one on each side of the beam and bolted to the beam by two bolts, which plates have at their front ends offsetting ears h h', with a vertical series of holes in them to receivea horizontal bolt, i, thatpasses through lugsjj of a horizontal draft-plate, 7c.' so as to form a hinge-joint therewith. Into any of the holes in this draft-plate the draft-hook of the team is fastened, the plows being made to draw to the right or left, according tothe position of the draft-hook in these holes.
I am aware ofthe fact that it is not broadly new toA connect two turn-'plows togelher to form a double plow, as shown in Patents Nos. 166,734, 64,906, and others, and I only claim my peculiar means for connecting and bracing the same, which makes a very light and strong construction and one capable of simple, quick, and easy adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with mold-'board A and beam A and the mold-board B and beam B, bent at b, as shown and described, of the con meeting-piece C, bolted to one of' said beams and having a slot and screw-bolt for connecting it to the other, for securing the two beams together and adj usting them in relation to each other, and a single pair of handles and braces connecting with the rear ends ot' the plows, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the two plowbeams A B', having eachtwo bolt-holes in their forward ends, of the coupling-piece O and clevis having corresponding holes to render them interchangeable in converting the implement from a double to a single plow, as described.
ANDREW JACKSON SMITH.
