Abstract

An oscillating burner pipe including a straight and a bent portion, of which the latter is intended to extend into a furnace and is provided with throttling means adjacent to its outlet end as well as with a regulating body reciprocable with respect to said throttling means by way of a mechanism designed to follow the movements of the oscillating pipe.

F23c 5/06 [58] Field of Search 431/1, 186, 189, DIG. 9; 239/102; 122/7 C [56] References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS 3,039,699 6/1962 Allen 239/101 11% ill BURNER FOR LIQUID WASTE FUEL BACKGROUND or THE INVENTION The combustion of liquid waste fuel, especially black liquor from the cellulose pulp manufacture, is difficult i.e. because the supply of waste fuel seldom is constant, while simultaneously the heat demand will vary from time to time.
Waste liquor is usually sprayed into the furnace of a steam boiler by means of an elongated pipe having a bent portion terminated by a plate spray nozzle adapted to be introduced through an opening in a furnace wall, said pipe further including a straight portion extending away from said wall and connectable to a fuel supply conduit, the pipe being mounted in a cradle adapted to impart an oscillating movement to the burner pipe. In order to obtain a complete combustion a careful spraying of the liquor within the furnace is required, which presupposes a certain size of spray nozzle with respect to the occasional volume of liquor injected. If the amount of liquor available is altered, the nozzle will have to be changed, which by itself is not very complicated, but is a dirty job and implies an interruption of the steam production.
What actually mostly happens when the amount of liquor is altered, is that the operation is permitted to run on for too long a time with a wrong nozzle size, which will result in unsatisfactory combustion. This means a loss in heat economy, but the grave danger is to be found in the fact that noxious components in the liquid will not decompose in an efficient manner, but will pass along with the combustion gases and will be harmful to the environment.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It has hitherto been considered impossible to adjust the size of the nozzle of a burner of this type, which on the one hand has an elongated shape, and on the other hand perpetually moves in an oscillating movement. According to the present invention it is now proposed that the burner be provided with a regulating body fitted into the bent portion of the pipe and reciprocable in the axial direction thereof with respect to a throttling means therein, and in an operating mechanism for the regulating body fitted in the straight portion of the pipe and connected to a governing device mounted upon and movable together with the pipe.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The walls of the furnace of a steam boiler contains water cooled tubes 10, which on their face remote from the furnace are covered by insulation 11. A number of openings 12 are provided in the furnace wall and into one of these a burner, generally denoted by 13 is mounted. This burner is carried by a bracket 14 from the furnace wall by'way of a cradle 15, which is pivotably connected to the bracket at 16. A pressure fluid operated device 17 imparts a swinging movement to the cradle with respect to pivot 16. A second pressure fluid operated device 18 imparts an oscillating movement to the burner pipe about its longitudinal axis. The combination of these movements will result in an efficient spraying of the liquor within the furnace, transversely with respect to the combustion gases arising therein.
The burner pipe proper includes a bent portion 19, which, in use, is located inside the furnace, and a straight portion 20,.which rests in the cradle and is connected to a waste liquor supply conduit 21. The bent portion 19 is terminated by a nozzle 22 and immediately downstream thereof a spraying plate 23 is fitted, which deflects the ejected liquor and transfers it into a flat jet.
In order to make possible an adjustment of the efficient outlet area in relation to the available quantity of liquor and to varying heat demand a throttling portion 24 is arranged in the outlet end of the pipe, just upstream of the outlet opening 22. A fusiform regulating body 25 is fitted within the pipe for cooperation with the throttling portion, said body being axially displaceable within the bent portion of the pipe.
The displacement is brought about by means of a mechanism, comprising a first rod 26, attached to the regulating body and a second rod 27 extending through a substantial part of the straight portion 20 of the burner pipe. The two rods are interconnected by means of a bell crank 28, which is mounted within the pipe, just at the bend between its two portions.
A shaft 29 is made to pass through an opening in the wall of the straight portion 20 of the tube remote from the furnace wall, said shaft being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe and provided with the necessary sealing means. This shaft is by way of a link 30 connected to rod 27 and it is evident that a turning of shaft 29 will bring about a displacement of rod 27 and simultaneously of regulating body 24. The turning of shaft 29 is brought about by means of a pressure fluid operated device 31, which is fitted at the burner pipe by means of a bracket 32 and will be moved together with the same. This device is by means of a rod 33 and a link 34 connected to shaft 29. Governing signals are transmitted to device 31 by means of flexible hoses 35, which function independently of the movements of the burner pipe.
The device 31 may alternatively be fitted inside pipe 20 in such a manner that it will act directly upon rod 27.
The link mechanism and the regulating body will reduce the available passage area inside the pipe, which will bring about an increase of the flow velocity. This is advantageous with respect to the portion of the pipe extending through the wall as well as the portion located immediately outside the same, as the increased velocity means an improved heat transfer from the pipe to the liquor and thereby a better cooling of the pipe.
What I claim is:
1. In a burner for liquid waste fuel of the type comprising an elongated pipe having a bent portion terminated by a plate spray nozzle adapted to be introduced through an opening in a furnace wall, said pipe further including a straight portion extending away from said wall and connectable to a fuel supply conduit, the pipe being mounted in a cradle adapted to impart an oscillating movement to the burner pipe, the improvement of 2. The burner according to claim 1, in which the operating mechanism comprises a rod reciprocable within the straight portion of the pipe, a bell crank for connecting one end of said rod to the regulating body, and a crank mechanism for connecting the opposite end of said rod to a rotatable shaft extending through the wall of the pipe.

Claims (2)

1. In a burner for liquid waste fuel of the type comprising an elongated pipe having a bent portion terminated by a plate spray nozzle adapted to be introduced through an opening in a furnace wall, said pipe further including a straight portion extending away from said wall and connectable to a fuel supply conduit, the pipe being mounted in a cradle adapted to impart an oscillating movement to the burner pipe, the improvement of a throttling means in said bent portion of the pipe, adjacent to the spray nozzle, a regulating body fitted within the bent portion of the pipe and reciprocable to the axial direction thereof with respect to said throttling means therein, and an operating mechanism for the regulating body fitted within in the straight portion of the pipe and connected to a governing device mounted upon and movable together with the pipe.
2. The burner according to claim 1, in which the operating mechanism comprises a rod reciprocable within the straight portion of the pipe, a bell crank for connecting one end of said rod to the regulating body, and a crank mechanism for connecting the opposite end of said rod to a rotatable shaft extending through the wall of the pipe.
