Referring more in detail to the drawings: As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein, however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention which may be embodied in various forms, therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting but merely as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention in virtually any appropriate detailed structure.
In the disclosed embodiment of the present invention, the reference numeral 1 generally designates a glue applying device for use with glue normally solid and that is melted for application and adapted to melt the glue and maintain the melted glue at a substantially uniform temperature throughout a container and for applying a glue coating of substantially uniform thickness to articles, strips, and the like. The glue applying device 1 includes a pre-melting chamber for melting glue and having a flow member 3 communicating with a melted glue container having heaters arranged to maintain all the glue therein at a uniform selected temperature. In the illustrated structure, the container includes an inner housing 4' within an outer housing 5 with respective walls thereof defining a space 6 between respective walls of the outer housing 5 and the inner housing 4 and having temperature insulating material filling the space 6 and a plurality of spaced heating units 7 within the walls of the inner housing 4 to maintain glue within the inner housing 4 at a substantially uniform temperature throughout the glue therein. To apply the glue to articles, rollers 8 are rotatably mounted on one of the outer housing 5 and the inner housing 4 and have means depositing glue on the peripheral edges 9 thereof to apply a coating of glue thereon to material, articles, and the like moved into engagement with said peripheral edges 9.
. The glue applying device 1 may be supported in any suitable manner, such as in a book binding machine, tablet making machine, or the like, however, the glue applying device 1 is illustrated as being supported on a suitable stand or frame 10 having a plurality of laterally and longitudinally spaced legs 11 each having a suitable glide 12 mounted on a lower end thereof and adapted to engage a suitable supporting surface, such as a floor or the like. The illustrated stand or frame 10 has a shelf 13 extending between and suitably secured to the legs 11, as by welding, to provide support for suitable temperature control means 14 operatively connected to a respective heating unit 7.
It is desirable to provide means surrounding the housing or container for the glue to be applied to articles to retard heat loss therefrom. The outer housing 5 surrounds the inner housing 4 and is suitably supported on the stand or frame 10, as by suitable feet 15 depending therefrom and each engaging an upper end of a respective leg 11. The outer housing is illustrated as an elongated structure which is generally rectangular or square in transverse cross section and which has a bottom wall 16 with laterally or transversely spaced side walls 17 and 18 and longitudinally spaced end walls 19 and 20 extending upwardly from the bottom wall 16 in a integral structure forming an outer container. The side walls 17 and 18 and the end walls 19 and 20 each have an enlarged upper edge portion, in the form of a flange 21, extending outwardly from the respective side I and end walls thereby defining an open top structure adapted to receive the inner housing therein.
The inner housing 4 is positioned within the outer housing 5 and is preferably of substantially the same general shape and structure as the outer housing 5. The illustrated inner housing 4 has a bottom wall 22 with laterally or transversely spaced side walls 23 and 24 and longitudinally spaced end walls 25 and 26 extending upwardly from the bottom wall 22 in an integral structure. The side walls 23 and 24 and the end walls 25 and 26 each have an enlarged upper edge portion, in the form of a flange 27, extending outwardly from the respective side and end walls thereof thereby defining an open top structure adapted to receive glue therein.
The walls of the inner housing 4 are preferably formed of a durablematerial having good heat conducting characteristics, such as metal. It is, therefore, desirable to provide suitable insulating material within the space 6 between theouter housing 5 and the inner housing 4 and particularly between the flange 21 and the flange 27 thereby physically separating the inner housing 4 and the outer housing 5 whereby the inner housing will have a minimum of heat loss thereby facilitating maintenance of uniform glue temperature.
It is preferable to maintain glue within the inner housing 4 at a substantially uniform temperature throughout the body of glue therein and to avoid localized cold or hot spots therein. Therefore, the bottom wall 22, side walls 23 and 24, and end walls 25 and 26 each have a plurality of substantially uniformly spaced heating elements therein. In the illustrated structure, the walls have elongated bore or passages therein with each adapted to receive therein a respective one of the heating units 7 which are illustrated as elongated heating elements each received within a respective one of the elongated bores or passages in the bottom wall 22, side walls 23 and 24, and end walls 25 and 26.
The heating units 7 are adapted to effect a substantially uniform temperature throughout the walls defining the. glue retaining portion of the inner housing 4, however, it is also desirable to effect a substantially uniform temperature within the portion of the glue spaced from the respective walls of the inner housing 4, therefore, at least one and preferably a plurality of heat radiators or fins 29 extend upwardly from the bottom wall 22 and are adapted to radiate heat and thereby cooperate With the heating units 7 and to distribute heat substantially uniformly throughout glue within the inner housing 4. Each radiator or fin 29 has at least one elongated passage or bore therein and preferably extending upwardly from the bottom wall 22 and adapted to receive therein a suitable heat sensing member 31 operative for sensing the temperature of the respective radiator or fin 29 and thereby glue adjacent same. The fins 29 are preferably formed to permit the peripheral edges 9 of the rollers 8 to be adjacent the bottom wall 22 during rotation thereof. Each of the fins 29, therefore, has a center portion 32 of an upper edge 33 thereof curved to define a substantially concave recess in an upper edge 33 thereof for movement of the peripheral edges 9 of the rollers 8 therein.
The temperature control means 14 may be any suitable device operative to effect a temperature within glue in the inner housing 4 of any selected value in the range of 150 Fahrenheit to 360 Fahrenheit (150 F. to 360 F.) depending on the type of glue within the inner housing 4. A suitable thermometer 34 is mounted on the inner housing 4 and has a portion thereof extending into glue within the inner housing 4.
There is at least one and preferably a plurality of the rollers 8 positioned to have the respective peripheral edges 9 thereof movable through the glue to apply a coating thereof to materials or articles moved into engagement with the respective peripheral edges 9. In the illustrated structure, a shaft 35 is positioned above the inner housing 4 and extends between suitable bearings 36 and 37 mounted on the flanges 27 extending from the side walls 23 and 24 respectively. The rollers 8 are mounted on the shaft 35 and each have an enlarged hub 38 which is suitably secured to the shaft 35, as by spiking or a set screw 39, whereby rotation of one 'of the rollers 8 effects rotation of the shaft 35 and consequently, rotation of the shaft 35 effects rotation of the rollers 8. A handle 40 extends from one end of the shaft 35 and extends beyond the outer housing 5 and is adapted to be gripped by an operator of the glue applying device to rotate the shaft 35 and the rollers 8 thereon.
The rollers 8 are each above and preferably aligned with a respective one of the fins or radiators 29 and the peripheral edges 9 each have a portion thereof adjacent the respective center portion 32 of the upper edge 33 and within the concave recess defined thereby to permit a reduction in height of the inner and outer housings and thereby economy of manufacture.
It is desirable that only a selected thickness of glue remain on the peripheral edges 9 of the rollers 8 when in engagement with the articles or material to receive glue thereon. Therefore, a blade or scraper 41 is suitably mounted on the inner housing 4 and positioned to have a scraping edge thereof adjacent and at selected spacing from the peripheral edges 9 of the rollers 8. An adjustment knob 42 is operatively connected to the blade or scraper 41 for adjusting the spacing between the scraping edge of the blade or scraper 41 and the peripheral edges 9 of the rollers 8 whereby a selected thickness of glue remains on the peripheral edges 9 to be transferred to the articles or material to receive glue thereon.
The articles or material to receive the glue on one side or edge thereof may be moved into engagement with the peripheral edge 9 of the respective roller 8 in any suitable manner. In the illustrated embodiment, strips of material to form tape by receiving glue on one side thereof are illustrated and may be mounted on the glue applying device 1 in any desired manner, such as having the material mounted on a suitable reel 43 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft 44 extending outwardly from a free end of a support arm 45 having the other end thereof suitably secured to a bracket 46 suitably mounted on the outer housing 5, as by a plurality of bolts or screws. A plurality of guide rods 47 are mounted on the support arm 45 and extend outwardly therefrom. The guide rods 47 are engaged by a strip of the material extending from the reel 43 and in a manner to direct the strip of material toward the respective roller 8, as best seen in FIG. 1.
In the illustrated embodiment, the strip of material extends from the guide rods 47 and into engagement with an elongated guide shaft 48 having opposite ends thereof suitably supported on the glue applying device 1, as by being secured to spaced upstanding ears 49 mounted on one of the outer housing 5 and the inner housing 4. In the illustrated structure, the ears 49 are suitably secured to the side walls 17 and 18 of the outer housing 5, as by suitable screws 50.
The strip of material extends from the guided shaft 48 and into engagement with the peripheral edge 9 of a respective one of the rollers 8 and then into engagement with a tape roller 51 spaced from the rollers 8 and adapted to be engaged by the other side of the tape after having the coating of glue applied to one side thereof and to direct the tape toward a point of use. The tape roller 51 is suitably mounted on the glue applying device 1 and in the illustrated structure, suitable spaced upstanding cars 52 are secured to the side walls 17 and 18 of the outer housing 5, as by screws 53, and extend upwardly from the respective upper edges of the side walls 17 and 18. A shaft 54 extends between the ears 54 and supports suitable spaced bearings 55 to rotatably mount respective opposite ends of the tape roller 51 on the shaft 54.
Substantially continuous operation of the glue applying device 1 requires a supply of melted glue, either low melt glue such as animal glue or hot-melt glue or glue having melting point therebetween, for the inner housing 4 which will maintain a selected lower level of an upper surface of glue within the inner housing 4, therefore, it is desirable to pre-melt glue for use within the inner housing 4. The pre-melting chamber 2 is positioned adjacent the glue applying device 1 and the flow member 3 extends therefrom and communicates with the inner housing 4. The pre-melting chamber 2 includes an outer container 58 which may be any desired shape, such as having a bottom wall 59 and a side wall 60 extending upwardly therefrom to define a generally cylindrical open top structure. The side wall 60 has an enlarged upper edge, in the form of flange 61, extending outwardly from the side wall 60 for supporting an inner container 62, as later described. The side wall 60 has an aperture therein for a purpose later described and the bottom wall 59 has an aperture or opening therein also for a purpose later described.
The pre-melting chamber 2 includes the inner container 62 which preferably has a shape substantially similar to the outer container 58, such as having a bottom wall 63 and a side wall 64 extending upwardly therefrom and defining a generally cylindrical structure having an open top. The illustrated inner container 62 has a flange 65 extending outwardly from an upper edge of the side wall 64 and adapted to engage suitable insulation supported on the flange 61 on the side wall 60 on the outer container 58 to thereby support the inner container 62 in a position within the outer container 58 and having the bottom wall 63 and the side wall 64 of the inner container 62 in spaced relation with the bottom wall 59 and side wall 60 respectively of the outer container 58 to thereby define a space between the inner container 62 and the outer container 58 to be filled with suitable temperature insulating material.
It is desirable to retain heat within the inner container 62, as by closing the open top of the inner container 62, therefore, the flange 65 has an enlarged peripheral edge portion 66 extending upwardly therefrom to define a recess adapted to receive an edge portion of a suitable lid 67 for closing the open top or upper end of the inner container 62. The lid 67 preferably has a suitable handle 68 thereon which may be used in placing the lid on the container 62 and in removing the lid 67 therefrom.
Heating means for the pre-melting chamber 2 are illustrated as being in the form of one or more strips or bands 69 adapted to engage the side wall 64 of the inner container 62 and the bands or strips 69 are operative to effect a temperature therein sufficient to melt either animal glue or hot-melt glue, as desired, and maintain the selected glue in a flowable condition. A suitable control unit 70 is electrically connected to the heating strips or bands 69 and a temperature sensing unit 71 is positioned in engagement with the inner container 62. A suitable electrical socket 72 is mounted in the aperture in the side wall of the outer container 58 and is electrically connected to the sensing unit 71 and to the heating strips or bands 69. The electrical socket 72 is adapted to receive a suitable electric plug which is electrically connected to the control unit 70.
The pre-melting chamber 2 is adapted to permit flow of melted glue from the inner container 62 to the inner housing 4 through the flow member 3. in the illustrated structure, the bottom wall 63 of the inner container 62 has an aperture 73 therein which is positioned in alignment with and above a suitable valve controlled receptable 74. Adjustment of a valve controlling flow of glue through the receptable 74 is effected by rotation of a stem 75, as by a suitable handle 76 connected thereto. The flow member 3 extends between and communicates the valve controlled receptable 74 with the inner housing 4 whereby operation of the valve is adapted to selectively effect flow of glue from the inner container 62 of the pre-melting chamber 2 into the inner housing 4 whereby a selected level of glue may be maintained within the inner housing.
lt is preferable to space unmelted animal or hot-melt glue from the bottom wall 63 and from the side walls 64 of the inner container 62, therefore, a support member 77 engages the bottom wall 63 and has a plurality of arms 78 extending upwardly from the bottom wall 63 with each having an upper edge thereof spaced from the bottom wall 63. A grid member 79 engages and is supported on the upper edges of the arms 78 of the support member 77 and is adapted to support unmelted glue thereon and to permit the glue to flow through the grid member 79 toward the bottom wall 63 and through the aperture 73 therein.
In using a glue applying device as illustrated and described, unmelted glue either animal glue or hot-melt glue as desired is placed on the grid member 79 within the pre-melting chamber 2. The temperature control unit is adjusted, as determined by the type of glue to be melted, and activated, as by suitable switch, to effect the desired temperature within the inner container 62. The glue flows through the flow member 3 into the inner housing 4 where the heating units 7 heat the walls of the inner housing 4 and maintain same at a substantially uniform temperature and the radiators or fins 29 are thereby heated and distribute heat to the glue within the inner housing 4 thereby maintaining substantially uniformly temperature throughout the glue within the inner housing 4. The article, edges of a plurality of sheets to form tablets or books, one side of an elongated strip of material to form tape, and the like is moved into engagement with the peripheral edge 9 of the respective roller 8. In the illustrated embodiment, the strip of material is threaded around the guide rods 47, under the guide shaft 48, over the roller 8 and under the tape roller 51. Movement of the strip of material effects rotation of the rollers 8 whereby the respective peripheral edges 9 thereof move through the glue and the blade or scraper 41 removes an amount of glue therefrom sufficient to effect a substantially uniform coating of glue on the peripheral edge 9 which is thereby transferred to one side of the strip of material. The tape thus formed and having a coating of glue thereon is moved around the tape roller 51 and then to a point of use, such as in a book binding apparatus, table making apparatus, or the like.
