4 Claims, 7 Drawing DOOR FRAME ASSEMBLY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to door frame assemblies formed of extruded metal sections providing a pleasing appearance and capable of being rapidly assembled in a door opening.
2. Description of the Prior Art Prior structures of this type include those formed of extruded and rolled metal sections to which hinge butts and striker plates may be selectively applied and as seen for example in US. Pat. Nos. 3,287,856, 2,910,154, and 3,083,798.
This invention eliminates some of the problems experienced with theprior art devices and in particular provides an improved simplified construction having improved structural and appearance characteristics.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A door frame assembly is disclosed which is com prised of a pair of upright frame members which are advantageously formed as aluminum extrusions together with an overhead frame member interconnecting the upright ends of the upright frame members. Either of the upright frame members will receive hinge butts so that a door can be hinged thereto and either of the upright frame members will receive a striker plate for the reception of the latch bolt of the door positioned in the door frame. Cover members are then applied to the upright frame members so as to conceal the hinge butts and the areas of the upright frame members to which the hinge butts and/or the striker plate are secured. The resulting door frame assembly is structurally sound, pleasing in appearance, capable of rapid installation in a door opening and is relatively inexpensive, both in manufacture and assembly.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective elevation with parts broken away and parts in cross section illustrating one of the upright frame members with a hinge butt and cover member secured thereto.
FIG. 2 is a perspective elevation of one of the upright frame members with partsv broken away and parts in cross section and illustrating a striker plate and-cover members secured thereto.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional elevation of the A cover member seen in FIGS. 1 and 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional elevation of the I DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the form chosen for illustration and description the present invention discloses a door frame assembly particularly adapted for use in defining a door frame such at their uppermost ends with'an overhead frame member 12. The uprightframe members 10 and 11 are formed of identical extruded metal shapes such as seen in enlarged cross sectional detail in FIG. 7 of the drawings and in perspective cross sectional detail in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The overhead frame member is seen in enlarged cross sectional detail in FIG. 6 of the drawings.
In FIGS. 1 and 7 of the drawings, it will be seen that an elongated section of the upright frame member 10 has oppositely disposed, spaced parallel flanges 13 and 14 the respective ends of which are intumed at 15 and 16 respectively. An interconnecting web portion extends between the flanges 13 and 14 and includes a hinge butt receiving seciton 17, a door stop flange 18 and an offset jambs 19. The intumed end portions 15 and 16, as seen in FIG. 1 of the drawings, will engage the outer surfaceof a wall in which the door frameis installed as will be understood by those skilled in the art, and the interconnecting web portion comprising the jambs 19, the door stop 18 and the hinge butt receiving section 17 will form the door frame with rehingebutt receiving section of the web portion 17 and moreparticularly on a pair of ribs 21 and 22 formed thereon. In FIG. 1 and in FIG. 7 of the drawings it will be observed that the ribs 21 and 22 are of different heights and that their outermost surfaces are angularly disposed so that the hinge but 20 will be positioned at a slight angle with respect to the general transverse plane of the upright frame member 10. Such disposition will advantageously position the hinge pin of the hinge butt so as to properly support and hinge a door, not shown, with respect thereto as will also be understood by those skilled in the art.
By referring to FIG. 7 of the drawings, it will be seen that a longitudinal groove 23 is formed in the outermost side of the rib 22 and that a portion of the door stop section 18 extends outwardly in an L -shape as at By referring now to FIG. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that a cover member 25 as also seen'in. enlarged detail in FIG.'3, has been positionedlwith an intumed,
longitudinal flange 26 thereof engaged in the longitudinally extending groove 23 and anoutturned longitudinally extending flange 27 thereof positioned beneath the L-shaped extension 24 of the door stop 18.
As best illustrated in FIG. 1 of the drawings, the cover member 25 thus covers the hinge butt receiving section 17 of the interconnecting'web of the upright frame member 10 including the-hinge butt 20 which has been secured thereto as by fasteners 28. The outturned flange 27 of the cover member 25 is secured by fasteners 29 in a longitudinally extending grooved channel 30 which comprises a portion of the interconnecting web of the upright frame member- 10 and specifically positioned between the door stop section 18 thereof and the hinge butt receiving section 17 thereof. In order that a door hinged to-a hinge butt and pivoted on the hinge butt 20 illustrated can be sealingly engaged with respect to the door stop 18, a vinyl extrusion 31 perferably tubular in cross section and having a dove-tailed configuration extending therefrom is positioned immediately over the outturned flange 27 of the cover member 25 and is self-retaining in such position.
' It will thus be understood that the construction disclosed and described in detail in FIGS. 1 and 7 of the drawings comprises the left hand portion of the door frame assembly seen in FIG. of the drawings wherein three of the hinge butts 20 are shown extending therefrom and it will be understood by those skilled in the art that portions of the cover member 25 adjacent the inturned flange 26 thereof are cutaway to provide clearance for the hinge butts 20 as best shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. The door frame assembly carrying the hinge butts 20 thus present an attractive and neatly finished door frame as only'the outermost portion of the hinge butt 20 is visible.
The right hand portion of the door frame assembly of FIG. 5 of the drawings is generally indicated at 11 in FIGS. 1 and 2 and by referring thereto it will be seen that it is a section of an extruded metal shape exactly the same asthat used on the hinge butt receiving portion heretofore described. In FIG. 2 of the drawings, a striker plate 32 which is a section of an extrusion seen in cross section in FIG. 4 of the drawings and subsequently apertured as at 33, is formed with an intumed flange 34 inwardly of its curving longitudinal edge 35. The intumed longitudinal flange 34 engages the same elongated groove 23 that is used to receive the intumed flange 26 of thecover member 25 two portions of which are then used, one above and one below the striker plate 32, as also seen in FIG. 2 of the drawings. The striker plate has an outturned flange 36 which registers beneath the L-shaped extension 24 of the door stop portion 18 of the interconnecting web of the extruded metal shape and fasteners 37 positioned through the outturned flange 35 thus secure the striker plate 31 in position on the upright frame member 11. While not illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawings, elongated sections of the vinyl extrusion 31 are then positioned over the fasteners 29 and 37 so that the edge of the door stop 18 is defined by the vinyl extrusion and thus capable of sealingly engaging a door closed thereagainst as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
It will thus be observed that the upright frame member 11 which as seen in FIG. 5 of the drawings, carries the door stop 32, is attractively finished, and that the positioning of the cover members 25 above and below the striker plate 32 completely cover the hinge butt receiving sections 17 of the-interconnecting web portion of the extruded metal shapes used to form the upright frame members, thus again presenting a pleasing appearance.
The overhead frame member 12 as seen in FIG. 5 of the drawings is shown in enlarged cross sectional detail in FIG. 6 and by referring thereto it will be seen that it includes oppositely disposed longitudinally extending parallel flanges 38 and 39 respectively, with an interconnecting web portion defining a door stop section 40 offset'with respect to the spaced transverse sections 41 and 42 thereof which correspond with the sections 19 and the cover member 25 of the upright frame mem bers 10 and 11 heretofore described. An L-shaped extension on the door stop section 40 is indicated by the numeral 43 and it will be observed that a section of the vinyl extrusion 31 with its dove-tailed mounting means can be received therein so that the sealing engagement of the door with the door frame assembly is maintained.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides a door frame assembly which is formed of two extruded metal shapes, one of which is used informing the upright frame members thereof and the other in forming the overhead frame member and that hinge butts may be applied at either side of the door frame thus fonn'ed and a striker plate applied oppositely thereto as customary.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides an extruded metal door frame assembly which may be quickly and easily assembled for hinging a door either on the right or left side thereof and that it provides an attractive appearance in that the cover members cover most of the hinge butts used and cover the mounting portions of the extruded metal shapes used. The same shapes can be used to form the door frame assembly so that a door hinged therein will swing into either of the areas separated by the door frame.
Although but one embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
