Description

UNtren @freres PATENT Glance.
GEURG-Il I. ROBERTS, OF S'l. LOUlS, MISSOURI.
lMPFtOVED BOX-MACHINE.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,827. dated March 3, ldtil.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Guo. P. ROBERTS, ot the city and county ot' St. Louis, and State ot' Missouri, have invented a new and useful device for holding the parts ot' boxes while the same are being nailed together, which invention I denominate Box-Machine57 and l do clear, and exact. description thereof', reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, and made to form a part ot' this specitication.
In the manufacture ot boxes, especially the smaller classes, much difliculty has been experienced in the proper holding ot' the parts To be nailed or screwed together, thereby involving a great deal of time, labor, and care.
The object ot' my invention is the construe tion ofa machine, which may be simple, cheap, and practical, by means ot' which the parts ot' boxes may be properly secured and held during the process of nailing, and which at the hereby declare that the following is a lull, v
same time may answer as a gage in the construction of boxes, thereby ett'ecting the saving of much time, labor, and expense, and ta,- cilitating the proper and perfect tinish to boxes.
The nature ot' this invention relates to the employment of adjustable stocks and springclamps, by means of which the parts ot' boxes to be nailed may be held, as hereinafter de scribed, speciiied, and represented.
In reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the front of my improved box-machine, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the rear ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a top view otl the springclamp.
A represents the frame ot' the machine, which may be formed of wood or metal in a strong and substantial manner, and of a size adapted to the class ot' boxes intended to be made.
B is a gage-plate rigidly and permanently secured to the frame A with its front face at a perfect right angle with the face A of the frame A. A
G represents the adjustable gage-stocks, ar ranged with their faces at perfect right angles with the face Aof frame A, and also with the front face of pla-te l. These stocks are adjustable laterally in such manner as to be g represents the clamps, which are rigidly secured to rods Il, distinctly shown in Fig. and formed to extend forward and lit into recesses in stocks C. (Shown in Fig. 2.) rEhe clatuprods h at e arranged in suitable bearings, i l, the bearings or blocks t' being adapted to act as stops tor the springj. lhe outer ends ofthe rods ll are formed with screw-tlneads, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, and are adapted to tit the female screw caps la. Theinner ends ot' said rods IL are provided with caps l, which are formed with a cavity adapted to receive. the cords m, the saidcords m being arranged to pass over pulleys n through the, tace A to the under side ot' lever j), where they may be secured upon a suitable pin in such manner as to be tightened or loosened at pleasure. The Ioot-leverp is pivoted to the base A" ot' the trame, and provided with aspring, 1', which holds it up and prevents it from acting upon the clamprods IL through the medium ot` the cords m, except when depress'd.
S is a cup, which may be used t1 r -the holding otl nails. i the working parts ot' the machine iu rear ot' the plate B, may be covered, and thereby kept clean and free from dust. The tension ot' the springs may be regulated by turning the screw-caps 7s.
Theoperation of my invention may be described as follows: The stocks G bein adjusted by means ofthe thumb-screws d to the length ot' the box to be made, the operator will depress the lever l) with his foot, thereby drawing the clamps g inwardly toward each other through the medium of cords m and rods h until sutlicient space is afforded between the said clamps g, and the faces ot' the stocks to receive the end pieces, as t of the box. The lever p will then be released, and the said end pieces held trml y against the stocks C by the clamps g, through the medium ofsprings] and rods lz., in proper position to receive one of the side pieces ot' the box. The said side piece will then be placed between the stocks C, and pressed firmly against the plate B, and upon the end pieces, t, which necessarily brings it to a perfect lit upon the said end pieces and into theproper position to be nailed. The next adapted to the length ofthe box to be conf structcd by means ot' the thumbscrews d and- The clamprods h, together with two-side pieces will be nailed in the samel manner; then if i1; is desired to nail the fourth side piece or top to the box, the end pieces lWill be released from the clamps g, so that said clamps may be allowed to retreat into the recesses in the stocks C; then theunlinished box may be inserted between the stocks and the last side piece or lop ofthe box nailed on, us before described.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that the plate B and the stocks G are made to net as :L perfect] gage in the oonstruetion of boxes, thereby relieving' the operator of all care in fitting1 the pieces of boxes Together, the material i'or ille boxes being' aflways properly prepared beo'e the operation olf' nailing'.
Having thus described my invention, what eno. e. ROBERTS. n.. si@ l .In presence of-` H. E. CLIFTON, 1G. A. SKULE.
