UNITED `"STATES PATENT CEEIcE.
WESLEY N. wHELESS, 0F AUGUSTA, GEoReiA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 4Letters Patent No. 377,974, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed May 13, 1887. Serial No. 238,098. (No model.) y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WESLEY N. WHELESS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Augusta, county of Richmond, State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Inlprovemenis in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in the combination, with a pencil-Sharpener, of a name-plate or stamp, as hereinafter described.
My invention further consists in the combination, with a pencil-Sharpener, of a nameplate or stamp and an ink-pad and cover, as hereinafter set forth.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a pencil-sharpener, of a tube projecting from one side thereof, and at a right angle thereto, the said tube adapted to receive one endl of a pencil, and thus form either a pencilhead or point-protector, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Myinvention further consistsin certain details of construction and combinations of parts, all of which are hereinafter fully described and Specifically claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device with its starnpcover thrown open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of same. Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudinal horizontal sections through the center of the conical recess of the Sharpener. Fig. 5 represents the sharpeningblade. Fig. 6 is a modification of Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the Sharpener proper, as Shown in Fig. 6.
On the drawings, the letter A designates a block or tube, having a conical recess, B, the apex of which is provided with an inclined or enlarged opening, c. At one side of the conical recess and extending nearly the whole length of same is a discharge slit or opening, d, and a knife-blade or Sharpener, e, the latter of sufficient length to project into the inclined or enlarged opening at the apex of the conical recess, so as to trim the eXtreme point of a pencil when operated thereon. The inner end of the knife-blade is provided with a ilesur face, as shown at e; but the ilesurface portion may be made in a separate piece oromitted altogether, if desired.
If the device be made of a solid block, as Shown in Figs. 1,2, 3, and 4, the top, bottom, andV sides of Same should be niade fiat, the
front end square therewith and the rear end provided with rearwardly-projecting lugs f, forpivoting thereto a suitable cover, G. The inside of the latter. is adapted to receive an ink-pad, h, of sufficient thickness to press upon the name-plate i, which is preferably 6C made of rubber and cemented to or otherwise secured on the upper surface. of -the device.
The letter k designates a coil-spring, which is fitted around the pivot or rod, whereby the cover is connected with the lugsj', so that one 65 end of the spring shall impinge against the end of the block and the other end against the inside of the cover, and thus serve to auto-l matically open the latter when its catch Z,
formed at the front end of Same, is released from the securing-notch shown at Z.
The underside of the block is provided with a thimble or tube, m, the inner diameter of which is about equal to that of an ordinary lead-pencil, so as to receive either end of same, 7 5
and thus serve as a pencil-header point-protector.
Instead of forming the main part of my device of a solid block, as above described, I
propose making the Sharpener proper of coni- 8o cal outside form, with turned or reduced ends, as shown at n n in Fig. 7,- so as to form means for connecting same with the name-plate or stamp foundation, which is made by cutting and bending or stamping a piece of flat metal so as to produce a iiat upper Surface for the stamp, end lugs for receiving the pin or pivots, whereby the cover is secured thereto, and downwardly-projecting ends o o', with a central hole in each for receiving the reduced 9C ends of the sharpening-tube, which I secure in position by pressing the ends o o'V of the plate down on the shoulders thereof, and by slightly expanding the ends of the tube, so as to more securely hold the same in position.
a name-plate or stamp, for thepurpose set lroo forth.
