Abstract
Strip material rolls have a trunnion mounted at one of the core portion ends thereof and the rolls are received in a carton for shipping with two of the rolls stacked axially aligned one above the other, the respective trunnion ends thereof oppositely facing carton walls. As carton positioned, flat end surfaces of the two rolls opposite from the trunnion ends thereof flatwise abut and the roll trunnion ends outwardly of the trunnions flatwise abut the carton walls while spaced axial projections of each of the trunnions penetrate the respective carton walls retaining the rolls against shifting within the carton and prevential axial telescopic disorientation of the strip material on the rolls. After shipping, a roll is removed from the carton and the trunnion end rotatably locked with a dispenser rotatable support member by axially inserting the trunnion projections into matching radial slot openings of the dispenser support member, while the opposite roll end is rotatably engaged with an opposite dispenser roll-mounting support.

PEER/AI MAHOA/EY, HORNBA K57? 5: ScH/cK A TTORNE YS STRIP MATERIAL ROLL HAVING IMPROVED TRUNNION AND METHODS OF SHIPPING AND DISPENSER MOUNTING THE SAME BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a strip material roll having an improved mounting trunnion at one of the core portion ends thereof, the novel trunnion serving the dual purpose of cooperating between a fiat end surface of the roll and a wall of a carton within which the roll is packed to retain the strip material of the roll properly aligned and prevent the strip material from being endwise or axially telescopically disoriented or disarranged during storage and shipment, while at the same time retaining the roll in the carton at an exact predetermined location throughout said storage and shipment. Still further, upon intended use of the roll of strip material on a dispenser, the roll may be removed from the shipping carton and rotatably mounted on the dispenser with the novel trunnion uniquely cooperating with a dispenser roll rupport member to lock the roll rotatable with the dispenser support member during the dispensing of the roll strip material and insure proper directional removal of the roll strip material on the dispenser.
With prior rolls of strip material, it has always been somewhat of a problem to properly pack and ship the strip material rolls in shipping cartons while still preventing axial telescopic disorientation or disarrangement of the strip material wound on said roll. Obviously, from the standpoint of most efficient strip material use and most efficient and practical shipping carton packing and shipping, the rolls of strip material have been provided with relatively flat ends. Thus, while the rolls of strip material are contained in the carton during storage and shipment thereof, it has been a problem of just exactly how to retain the flat ends of the rolls against disfiguration since such disfiguration creates extreme difficulties in later use of the rolls with the various forms of dispensers.
This problem has been even further magnified with the advent of the new, embossed and soft or loosely wound strip material rolls, such as the more modern embossed paper toweling. There loosely wound rolls of strip material tend to be even more easily disarranged from axial slippage of the strip material layers one over the other so as to be clearly more subject to disarrangement and disfiguration during storage and shipment thereof, presenting the later difficulties in dispensing such rolls with the use of the various forms of conventional dispensers.
It, therefore, has become a distinct problem requiring solution as to just how to pack and ship these more loosely wound rolls of strip material while maintaining the same protected against disfiguration, yet without resorting to complicated shipping cartons which can become prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, the solution to this problem must take into consideration the later mounting of the rolls of strip material on the dispensers. Although slight additions to the individual rolls can be tolerated from the overall expense standpoint, any additions caused thereby to the dispensers must likewise not be prohibitive from the cost standpoint.
OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a strip material roll having an improved mounting trunnion wherein a unique configuration of the trunnion not only serves the purpose of securing the strip material rolls within a shipping carton during storage and shipment against damage and disfiguration, including the endwise or axial strip material layer disorientation and slippage one layer over the other, but also permits the use of fiat walled, standard shipping cartons of plain and uncomplicated configuration, cooperating therewith to provide the foregoing protection. According to certain of the principles of the present invention, the trunnion is mounted at one of the core portion ends of the strip material roll during the manufacture of said roll, and during packing and shipment of the roll, projecting means on the trunnion penetratingly engages a flat wall of the carton to retain the roll of strip material against shifting therein after packing and during shipment thereof. Additionally, and most important, the end of the roll radially outwardly of the trunnion is formed fiat in conventional manner and during the trunnion projection means penetrating engagement with the flat carton wall, this roll fiat end is retained flatwise abutting the carton wall protecting the strip material on the roll from the telescopic disarrangement and damaging disfiguration hereinbefore discussed.
Also, by the mounting of the unique trunnion at only one of the strip material roll ends, the opposite end of the roll remains fiat without interference of any trunnion projection means. Thus, in the shipping carton, a second roll may be axially aligned with the first, except oppositely axially oriented and with flat roll ends opposite the trunnion ends flatwise abutting and supporting one another. The trunnion end of the second roll penetratingly cooperates in the same manner with another of the flat carton walls, thereby protecting both rolls of strip material in virtually the identical manner, as well as protecting the roll trunnions against damage for later use with a dispenser.
It is another object of this invention to provide a strip material roll having an improved mounting trunnion of the foregoing form and with the foregoing advantages which serves the further purpose of locking the particular roll of strip material on a dispenser for proper rotation thereof during dispensing and proper directional dispensing of the roll strip material, yet with only minor modifications to the dispenser. Upon a roll of strip material having the unique trunnion mounted thereon being removed from its secure positioning in the shipping carton, the previously carton penetrating projection means of the trunnion cooperates with matching openings of a modified and particularly formed dispenser roll support so as to quickly and positively lock the roll trunnion on and rotatable with the dispenser roll support. Equally as important, with the trunnion mounted on only one end of the strip material roll, the roll can only be mounted on the dispenser with strip material dispensed in one rotational direction, thereby insuring proper roll mounting on the dispenser. The rotatable mounting on the dispenser of the roll end free of mounting the roll trunnion is carried out in the prior conventional manner and does not require any modification of the dispenser.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a strip material roll having an improved mounting trunnion which satisfies the foregoing objects and contains all of the distinct advantages thereof, but which does not add appreciably to the overall expense of the roll of strip material, its shipping carton or its dispenser from which the strip material of the roll is to be dispensed. The unique trunnion may be molded from plastic or other cheaply manufactured materials of a particular easily manufactured shape and is axially inserted for mounting in the end of the roll core portion, whether the roll includes a cardboard core member or otherwise and with the trunnion merely axially abutting the conventional flat end surface of the roll at said core portion. The carton within which the rolls of strip material are packed and shipped may be entirely conventional of the usual flat wall type. Finally, the dispenser upon which the roll of strip material is to be mounted requires only the addition of a relatively simply and cheaply manufactured, but specifically formed, rotatable support member at one of the dispenser roll-mounting supports, this rotatable support member again being adapted for injection molding from plastic or other cheaply manufactured materials.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be ap parent from the following specification and the accompanying drawings which are for the purpose of illustration only.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BEST EMBODIMENT CONTEMPLATED Referring to the drawings, substantially identical rolls of strip material, such as rolls of paper toweling, are generally indicated at and each preferably include a hollow cylindrical, cardboard core member 12 forming a core opening 14 and upon which is continuously wound strip material 16, preferably paper toweling. Substantially radially flat end surfaces 18 and 20 are formed on each of the rolls 10 by the edges of the wound strip material 16 and the opposite ends of core member 12, all to this point forming rolls of strip material 10 of somewhat conventional construction. Also, the roll end surface 20 may be formed with an annular mounting groove 22 immediately outwardly adjacent that end of the core member 12 for somewhat conventional rotatable mounting as will be hereinafter more clearly described.
More particularly according to the principles of the present invention, each of the strip material rolls 10 further includes a unique form of preferably molded plastic trunnion generally indicated at 24 having a hollow cylindrical portion 26 terminating axially at one end an integral, radially outwardly projecting, annular flange 28. The trunnion annular flange 28 preferably terminates radially outwardly in a cylindrical periphery 30 at which a plurality of preferably equally circumferentially spaced and axially extending projections 32 are integrally formed on and extending from the trunnion annular flange. Still further, the trunnion projections 32 are preferably substantially identical, each being pointed in a direction axially away from or opposite the trunnion annular flange 28.
On each of the strip material rolls 10, the trunnion 24 is mounted at the core portion at the one end surface 18 opposite from the end surface 20 and with the trunnion cylindrical portion 26 axially received telescoped by that end of the core member 12. At the same time, the trunnion 24 is positioned so that the annular flange 28 thereof axially abuts against the end of the core member 12 and the flat end surface 18 of the roll fonned by the edges of the strip material 16 immediately outwardly adjacent the core member. As shown, therefore, the trunnion projections 32 extend axially away or outwardly from the roll flat end surface 18 at the roll core portion, and also preferably extend axially outwardly of the remainder of the roll flat end surface 18 at radially outward parts of the roll as formed by the edges of the strip material 16.
A dispenser is generally indicated at 34 and as is usual, includes spaced roll-mounting supports generally indicated at 36 and 38. The roll-mounting support 38, that is, that shown at the left in FIG. 1, may be somewhat conventional, having a usually nonrotatable support member 40 resiliently axially urged for reception in the roll-mounting groove 22 axially releasably and rotatably mounting by relative slippage the left side of the strip material roll 10 as seen in FIG. 1 and not specifically forming a part of the novel principles of the present invention. The roll-mounting support 36, however, is of novel form and includes an axially extending spindle 42 supporting a preferably plastic bushing 44, in turn, rotatably supporting or mounting a disklike, preferably plastic support member 46.
As best seen in FIG. 3, the disklike support member 46 of the roll-mounting support 36 if of similar, slightly larger, cylindrical size than the roll trunnion 24 and preferably having a cylindrical periphery 48. Furthermore, the disklike support member 46 is formed with a plurality of axially extending peripheral openings or slots 50 preferably opening radially outwardly and circumferentially matching the roll trunnion projections 32. The support member openings or slots 50 are formed of proper size for the full-axial reception of the roll trunnion projections 32 therein with the roll trunnion annular flange 28 axially abutting the disklike support member 46 radially inwardly of the openings or slots 50.
During storage and shipment of the strip material rolls 10, the rolls are packed in a conventional shipping carton generally indicated at 52 and as shown in FIG. 5, the carton, for instance, being formed of the usual corrugated cardboard. In the packing, a first of the strip material rolls 10 is positioned with the flat end surface 18 having the trunnion 24 lying downwardly flatwise abutting and supported by a flat lower wall 54 of the carton 52, the trunnion annular flange 28 compressing or embedding into the relatively easily compressible carton flat lower wall and the trunnion projections 32 penetrating into said flat lower wall. A second of the strip material rolls 10 is then reversely axially aligned with the first of said rolls so that the roll flat end surfaces 20 axially abut, and upon closing of the carton 52, the second roll flat end surface 18 at the trunnion 24 flatwise abuts a flat upper wall 56 of the carton, again the trunnion annular flange 28 compressively embedding into this flat upper wall and the trunnion projections 32 penetrating into said flat upper wall.
Thus, during storage and shipment, the strip material rolls 10 having the unique trunnion 24 are fully protected against disorientation and disfiguration of the edges of the wound strip material 16 and endwise telescopic slippage between strip material layers by the various flat, endwise abutting supports between axially adjacent rolls and against the carton flat lower and upper walls 54 and 56. Also, the embedding of the trunnion projections 32 of the strip material rolls 10 in the carton flat lower and upper walls 54 and 56 retain the rolls against any possible shifting within the carton 52 parallel to said lower and upper walls, again fully protecting the wound strip material 16 of the rolls against disorientation and disfiguration. Still further, such embedding protects the trunnions themselves against damage so as to be in proper form for later cooperation with the dispenser upon which the rolls will be mounted.
Upon arrival of the shipping carton 52 with the strip material rolls 10 therein at the site of use in the dispenser 34, the carton is opened and one of the strip material rolls removed therefrom for positioning between the dispenser roll-mounting supports 36 and 38. During such positioning, the end of the roll 10 at the end surface 20 and containing the mounting groove 22 is engaged with the roll mounting support 38 in usual manner and the roll end at the end surface 18 and the trunnion 24 is positioned with the trunnion projections 32 received axially into the matching support member openings or slots 50 at the roll-mounting support 36. This latter action thereby locks the roll trunnion 24 rotatable with the disklike support member 46 of the roll mounting support 36 so as to rotatably support the particular strip material roll 10 on the dispenser 34.
Note particularly that with the trunnions 24 at only one end of the rolls 10, the rolls can only be mounted on the dispenser 34 in one manner, the trunnions always being required to be received on the special roll-mounting support 36. Thus, proper mounting of the rolls 10 on the dispenser 34 for proper directional rotation during dispensing is always assured. Furthermore, easier roll 10 rotational movement is obtained by the freely journaled disklike support member 46, despite the fact that the opposite roll end is conventionally required to slip during rotation on its roll support.
According to the principles of the present invention, therefore, a strip material roll is provided having a unique mounting trunnion incorporated therewith providing the advantages of complete protection of such rolls during storage and shipment, while uniquely cooperating with a particularly formed dispenser roll mounting support member locking the roll into proper rotatable support in a dispenser upon which the roll is later mounted and used, During storage and shipment, the trunnion projections penetrate the fiat walls of the shipping carton within which the rolls are packed retaining proper flatwise abutments of the roll end surfaces with flat walls of the carton preventing endwise telescopic strip material layer slippage and preventing the rolls from shifting within the carton which could cause disorientation and disfiguration of the wound strip material of the rolls. Upon removal of a roll from the shipping carton and mounting of the same at the rollmounting supports of a dispenser, the trunnion locks with a unique mating support member of the dispenser for properly rotatably supporting the roll on the dispenser during the removal of the roll strip material therefrom and with the strip material dispensed in the proper direction from the roll.
I claim:
1 ln strip material roll construction, the combination of: a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends, substantially fiat radially extending end surfaces on said roll radially outward of said core portion formed by said strip material; a trunnion mounted at one of said roll core portion ends, projection means extending axially from said trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll substantially flat end surfaces at said core portion one end; a carton having substantially flat walls; and said roll being received in said carton with said roll flat end surfaces at said core portion one end flatwise abutting one of said carton walls and said roll trunnion projection means penetrating said carton one wall retaining said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton one wall.
2. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll is a first roll; in which a second roll substantially identical to said first roll is received in said carton generally axially aligned with said first roll and with said flat end surfaces of said first and second rolls at roll ends axially opposite said trunnion mounted core portions axially abutting; and in which said second roll flat end surfaces at said trunnion mounted core portion flatwise abut another of said carton walls with said second roll trunnion projection means penetrating said carton other wall retaining said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
3. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll trunnion projection means includes spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and being pointed in a direction axially away from said trunnion; and in which said roll trunnion pointed projections penetrate said carton one wall.
4. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll trunnion projection means includes a plurality of spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and being pointed in a direction axially away from said trunnion; in which said roll trunnion pointed projections penetrate said carton one wall; in which said roll is a first roll; in which a second roll is substantially identical to said first roll and is received in said carton axially aligned with said first roll and with said flat end surfaces of said first and second rolls axially opposite said trunnion mounted core portion ends flatwise axially abutting; and in which said second roll flat end surfaces at said trunnion mounted core portion end flatwise abut another of said carton walls and said second roll trunnion projections penetrate said carton other wall retaining said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
5. ln strip material roll construction, the combination of: a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; a trunnion mounted at one of said roll core portion ends, a plurality of spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and axially outwardly of said core portion one end; a dispenser having spaced roll-mounting supports, one of said roll-mounting supports including a rotatable support member having spaced axially extending opening means therein opening axially toward the other of said roll supports, said support member opening means being positioned and dimensioned for receiving said roll trunnion projections therein mounting said roll trunnion and roll rotatable with said support member; and said roll being rotatably mounted on said dispenser with said roll trunnion projections in said support member opening means and the other of said roll core portion ends rotatably supported at said dispenser other roll support.
6. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 5 in which said trunnion projections are radially spaced from the axis of rotation of said trunnion and said roll support member.
7. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 5 in which said roll trunnion has a generally cylindrical periphery with said trunnion projections being equally circumferentially spaced about said trunnion periphery; and in which said opening means of said dispenser support member include generally radially outwardly opening slots formed in said dispenser support member.
8. In a method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment, the steps of: preparing a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trunnion at one of said roll core portion ends; inserting said roll with said trunnion into a carton and abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with a substantially fiat wall of said carton; and during said abutment of said roll flat end surface with said carton wall, penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll fiat end surface to retain said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
9. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trunnion at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with projection means extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
10. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections.
11. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; and in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trunnion at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
12. In a method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser, the steps of: preparing a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mounted at one of said roll core portion ends; inserting said roll with said trunnion into a carton and abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with a substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said roll flat end surface with said carton wall, penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll flat end surface to retain said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton wall; removing said roll from said carton and positioning said roll on a dispenser with said roll core portion axially between dispenser roll-mounting supports; during said roll positioning on said dispenser, engaging said trunnion at said roll core portion end with a rotatable support member of the one of said dispenser roll mounting supports at said one roll core portion end; during said trunnion engagement with said rotatable support member, locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser by inserting said trunnion projection means generally axially into matching opening means of said rotatable support member; and during said roll positioning on said dispenser, rotatably supporting the other of said roll core portion ends at the other of said dispenser roll-mounting supports.
13. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mounted at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially ex tending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with projection means extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
14. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; and in which said step of locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser includes the inserting of said trunnion spaced pointed projections generally axially into matching openings of said rotatable support member.
15. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; in which step of locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser includes the inserting of said trunnion spaced pointed projections generally axially into matching openings of said rotatable support member; and in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mounted at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion by piercing said other carton wall with said spaced pointed projections to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
Claims (15)
1. In strip material roll construction, the combination of: a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends, substantially flat radially extending end surfaces on said roll radially outward of said core portion formed by said strip material; a trunnion mounted at one of said roll core portion ends, projection means extending axially from said trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll substantially flat end surfaces at said core portion one end; a carton having substantially flat walls; and said roll being received in said carton with said roll flat end surfaces at said core portioN one end flatwise abutting one of said carton walls and said roll trunnion projection means penetrating said carton one wall retaining said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton one wall.
2. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll is a first roll; in which a second roll substantially identical to said first roll is received in said carton generally axially aligned with said first roll and with said flat end surfaces of said first and second rolls at roll ends axially opposite said trunnion mounted core portions axially abutting; and in which said second roll flat end surfaces at said trunnion mounted core portion flatwise abut another of said carton walls with said second roll trunnion projection means penetrating said carton other wall retaining said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
3. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll trunnion projection means includes spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and being pointed in a direction axially away from said trunnion; and in which said roll trunnion pointed projections penetrate said carton one wall.
4. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 1 in which said roll trunnion projection means includes a plurality of spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and being pointed in a direction axially away from said trunnion; in which said roll trunnion pointed projections penetrate said carton one wall; in which said roll is a first roll; in which a second roll is substantially identical to said first roll and is received in said carton axially aligned with said first roll and with said flat end surfaces of said first and second rolls axially opposite said trunnion mounted core portion ends flatwise axially abutting; and in which said second roll flat end surfaces at said trunnion mounted core portion end flatwise abut another of said carton walls and said second roll trunnion projections penetrate said carton other wall retaining said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
5. In strip material roll construction, the combination of: a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; a trunnion mounted at one of said roll core portion ends, a plurality of spaced projections extending axially from said trunnion and axially outwardly of said core portion one end; a dispenser having spaced roll-mounting supports, one of said roll-mounting supports including a rotatable support member having spaced axially extending opening means therein opening axially toward the other of said roll supports, said support member opening means being positioned and dimensioned for receiving said roll trunnion projections therein mounting said roll trunnion and roll rotatable with said support member; and said roll being rotatably mounted on said dispenser with said roll trunnion projections in said support member opening means and the other of said roll core portion ends rotatably supported at said dispenser other roll support.
6. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 5 in which said trunnion projections are radially spaced from the axis of rotation of said trunnion and said roll support member.
7. Strip material roll construction as defined in claim 5 in which said roll trunnion has a generally cylindrical periphery with said trunnion projections being equally circumferentially spaced about said trunnion periphery; and in which said opening means of said dispenser support member include generally radially outwardly opening slots formed in said dispenser support member.
8. In a method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment, the steps of: preparing a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trUnnion at one of said roll core portion ends; inserting said roll with said trunnion into a carton and abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with a substantially flat wall of said carton; and during said abutment of said roll flat end surface with said carton wall, penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll flat end surface to retain said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
9. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trunnion at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with projection means extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
10. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections.
11. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment as defined in claim 8 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; and in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends; mounting a trunnion at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
12. In a method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser, the steps of: preparing a roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mOunted at one of said roll core portion ends; inserting said roll with said trunnion into a carton and abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with a substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said roll flat end surface with said carton wall, penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said roll flat end surface to retain said roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton wall; removing said roll from said carton and positioning said roll on a dispenser with said roll core portion axially between dispenser roll-mounting supports; during said roll positioning on said dispenser, engaging said trunnion at said roll core portion end with a rotatable support member of the one of said dispenser roll mounting supports at said one roll core portion end; during said trunnion engagement with said rotatable support member, locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser by inserting said trunnion projection means generally axially into matching opening means of said rotatable support member; and during said roll positioning on said dispenser, rotatably supporting the other of said roll core portion ends at the other of said dispenser roll-mounting supports.
13. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mounted at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with projection means extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
14. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; and in which said step of locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser includes the inserting of said trunnion spaced pointed projections generally axially into matching openings of said rotatable support member.
15. A method of packing strip material rolls for storage and shipment and mounting said rolls on a dispenser as defined in claim 12 in which said step of penetrating said carton wall with projection means extending axially from said roll trunnion includes the penetrating of said carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said roll trunnion by piercing said carton wall with said spaced pointed projections; in which step of locking said trunnion and support member simultaneously rotatable on said dispenser includes the inserting of said trunnion spaced pointed projections generally axially into matching opEnings of said rotatable support member; and in which said method includes the further steps of: preparing a second roll of strip material having a core portion with axially spaced ends and a trunnion mounted at one of said second roll core portion ends; inserting said second roll with said trunnion into said carton generally axially aligned with said roll in said carton; during said insertion of said second roll into said carton, axially abutting substantially flat radially extending end surfaces of said rolls axially opposite said one roll core portion ends; abutting a substantially flat radially extending end surface on said second roll radially outwardly of said one core portion end with another substantially flat wall of said carton; during said abutment of said second roll flat end surface with said other carton wall, penetrating said other carton wall with spaced and axially pointed projections extending axially from said second roll trunnion and axially outwardly of said second roll flat end surface at said second roll trunnion by piercing said other carton wall with said spaced pointed projections to also retain said second roll against endwise telescopic strip material layer shifting and roll shifting parallel to said carton other wall.
