PATET BED OR CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,605, dated September 6, 1887,
Application filed April 7, 1887. Serial No. 234,026. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS LUOAOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beds or Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety attachment for childrens cribs or beds and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The objects of the invention are to produce a crib or bed which can be used with entire safety, the children being prevented from either falling or climbing therefrom by adustable means attached thereto, and also to produce an article the parts of which are so arranged that it may be folded in a single layer without removing the sides or ends thereof.
The invention will be fully understood from the description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is aperspeetive view of the crib or bed embodying my invention, the safety-netting being stretched across the same. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the attachment, the netting being pushed to one side.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. I
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the bed-posts; B, the sides or frame thereof; O, the foot end, and D the head.
To the head and foot posts A are secured the transversal rods or poles E by means of screw-eyes a, the latter having caps b for the purpose of hiding the entrance of the screweyes a into the post A. The ends of the poles or rods E are provided with the ornamental knobs c, which are screwed into or attached thereto, and which pass through the openings in the screw-eyes a. In attaching these poles the screw-eyes a and caps Z; are first secured to the posts, and the knobs or balls 0 then passed through the said openings in the screweyes a and screwed into the ends of the poles E. At one side of the bed and to the ornamental knob c is secured a pole, F, by means of screw-eyes d, the eyes of the latter passing around the shanks of the said knobs c and having the screws thereof passing into the ends of the said pole F, caps 0 being inserted between the eyes of said screw-eyes d and the poles E.
It will be understood from the above that the three poles E E F are stationary or immovable, being rigidly but detachably secured to the posts of the bed or crib.
G represents a movable pole, the ends of which are provided with screw-eyes f, which encircle the supporting-rods E and enter the ends of the rod G, which latter is provided on either end with the ornamental caps r This arrangement allows the rod G to be moved in either direction across the top of the bed or crib, the movable pole G being adapted to carry one edge or side of the safety-netting H. This netting is constructed of any soft, pliable, and strong material, and is attached to the sta tionary rod F and the side rods, E, and the movable rod G by a cord of the sarnematerial as the netting being wound around the outside or edge mesh of said netting and the poles E E, F, and G, thereby avoiding the noise incident to the use of metallic rings.
On top of and near the ends of the supporting-poles E are secured the springs or clips h, designed for the purpose of holding the movable rod G in position, as shown. in dotted lines in Fig. 2, after the safety-net has been stretched across the top of the crib to prevent the child from falling or climbing therefrom. Instead, however, of having the rod F stationary, the same might be arranged to move on the rods E in the same manner as the rod G, in which case both ends of each rod E will be provided with the springs or clips it, instead of one end only, as shown in the drawings.
When desirable to inclose the child in the bed or crib, it is simply necessary to move the rod G until it assumes the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the safetynet H traveling along the rods E and stretching entirely aerossthe top of the crib, and when desired to remove the child it is simply necessary to push the rod G back to its original position, by reason of which the netting will be noiselessly folded up at one side of the crib or bed, as shown in Fig. 2.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination, with a childs crib comprising uprightsides and head and foot boards, of a horizontal rod, F, at one side of the crib, a transverse rod, E, at the head and foot boards, a horizontal rod, G, having a sliding connection at its ends with the transverse rods, and a safety flexible netting, H, secured at its sides to the horizontal rods and loosely connected at its ends with the transverse rods for stretching the netting over the top of the crib-frame, substantially as described.
2. Thecombinatiomwitha child's crib comprising the upright sides and head and foot boards, of a transverse rod, E, at the head and foot boards, asafety flexible netting, H, secured at one-side and loosely connected at its ends with the transverse rods, and a horizontal rod, G, secured to the opposite side of the netting and slidable on the transverse rods to stretch the netting over the top of the crib-frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with achilds crib comprising the upright posts A, sides B, and head and foot boards 0 D, of the horizontal side rod, F, and transverse end rods, E, detachably connected with the crib-posts, the safety flexible netting H, secured at one side to said horizontal rod and loosely connected at its ends with the transverse rods, and the rod G, secured to'the other side of the netting and having end eyes, f, loosely engaging the trans. verse rods to stretch the netting over the top of the crib-frame, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a cribcomprising the corner-posts A, sides B, and head and foot boards 0 D, of the screw-eyes a, secured to the posts, the horizontal transverse rods E, mounted in said screw-eyes, the horizontal side rod, F, the screw-eyes d, mounted on the transverse rods and engaging said rod F, the safety flexible netting H, secured at one side of the latter and loosely connected at its ends with the transverse rods, and the movable rod G, secured to the other side of the netting and having eyes f engaging the transverse rods for stretching the netting over thetop of the cribframe, substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
