Description
Patented Aug. 30, 1887 1? iNVENTOR:
& E S S E N W W N PETERS. Phnlo-Lllhogmphun Washington. at;
UNITE l) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY VOLLMER, or PHlLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOCKET, EAR-ERAING, OR, OTHER 'J EW'ELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368.9 84, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed June 16, 1887. Serial No. 241,492. (No model.) Y
To all whom itmay concern;
Be itknown that I, HENRY VOLLMER,EI citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of PennsyL vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lockets, Ear-Rings, and'other Jewelry, which .improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings. Y
My invention consists of a locket, ear-ring, or similar jewelry formed of sections which may be folded one within the other, and provided with means for securing the samein closed condition, as will be hereinafter fully described. i
Figures 1 and 2 representside elevations of a locket embodying my invention, the same being respectively in closed and open condithey may rotate on each other, and the section 0 fold within the section B when thelocketis to be opened, the two sections, when the section V O is unfolded, forming a spherical body, as
will be seen in Fig. 1. One of the journals or pivots a has an eye, b, secured to or formed with it for purposes of suspending the locket.
D represents the central rim of the locket, the same being secured to the section B and having in the edge thereof an open slot, E, the inner ends thereof being enlarged, as at F. The walls of the slot E are beveled or otherwise thinned or reduced, so as to yield, for
purposes hereinafter stated. 7
Connected with the edge of the section 0 is a pin, G, which projects outwardly therefrom,
and is so disposed that it may enter the slot E and be locked in the enlargement F. v
When the locket is to be closed, the section Ois rotated so that it fully emerges from the a section D. The pin G enters the slot E and presses against the side walls thereof, said walls then yielding, so that the pin may pass the same until it reaches the enlargement F, when it springs or drops into the same, and thus locks or secures the two sections in closed position.
In order to open the locket for access to the interior thereof, the pinG is pressed in the direction of the length of the slot E and thus forced through the same, the walls yielding and allowing the pin to pass the same. When the pin clears the slot, the sections are unlocked and the section 0 may befolded into x the section B, the face of said section being exposed, and the picture or other contents of the locket may be readily seen.
When the sections are employed for the purposes of an ear-ring, a bow is employed in lieu of the eye b, so as to be fitted to the ear, the section 0 containing a diamond or other precious stone or ornamentation, which may be concealed or exhibited, or a spherical or herni= spherical body presented, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A locket formed of sections which are rotatable one within the other and are provided with a lock, substantially as described.
2. A locket formed of sections which are connected by pivots and provided with alock and having a suspension device, one section being adapted to fold within the other, the parts being combined and operating substantially as described. V
3. A locket formed of sections which may rotate one within the other, one section having on its rim an open slot, the inner end' HENRY VOLLMER.
