UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD ROBARDS, OF STILESVILLE, INDIANA.
FENCE-POST.
QPECIPIC'ATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 367,848, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed November 20, 1886. Serial No. 220,773.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD ROBARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stiles ville, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do herebydeclaro that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fence-posts; andthe the ground. Similar posts have also been constructed in which V-shaped notches for retaining the wire are provided at the junction of the wings forming the body of the post, the wings converging attheir lower ends to form a vertical slot, in which is pivoted a dependent plate having longitudinal laterallyprojecting flanges.
My invention is designed as an improvement over these prior constructions; and to this end it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa fencepost embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. 'Fig. 3 is a horizontal section; and Fig. 4 is adetail view of the sleeve carrying the flange and bent strip, said sleeve being removed.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by the same letters of reference,
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the post, which consists of a long tubular portion, 13, of metal, which tubular portion is provided at suitable intervals with ap (No model.)
proxi niately Vshaped slits or'slots, as shown, which are adapted to receive the wires. \Vhen the wires are to be inserted in the slits, they are pressed or forced down below the projections b,formed by the V-shaped slots, and the wires inserted. As soon as released they occupy a position at the upper ends of the V- shaped slots, so that all possibility of their detachment is prevented. I
At the lower end of the body portion is 10- eated a shank or sleeve, 0, which may or may not be solid, asdesired, said shank or sleeve fitting within the main or body portion 13, and held therein by a transverse pin, '0, which passes through the bod y portion and the shank or sleeve. Dependingfrom theshank or sleeve is a blade or flange, which is sharpened at its lower end, so that it will readily enter the ground.
I) represents a metallic strip or cross-piece, which is secured in any preferable way to the blade or flange, said cross-piece being bent or twisted at its ends, as shown, and adapted to steady the post, and also serve to hold it in the ground and prevent its too easy removal.
A fence-post constructed as above described is simple, cheap, and durable, and by its use the wires may be readily and quickly strung or unstrung, and at the same ti me'will be held securely in position.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim is' The combination, in a fence-post-, with the tubular body having an open cylindrical lower end, ofthe cylindrical sleeve corresponding to and inclosed within the lower end of the tubular body, a transverse securing-pin passing through the body and sleeve, the blade or flange depending from the sleeve and having a portion projecting within the same, and the transverse blade secured to the face of the flange and having each end twisted, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD BOBARDS.
