Abstract

A wig construction in which the forwardly disposed portions of the hair strands may be parted at a desired laterally disposed location to give the appearance of the scalp of the wearer at the parting line. The wig includes a rearwardly extending foundation element of conventional netted textile construction defining a forward edge, and a laminated substrate element interconnected to said forward edge at a rearward edge thereof, and including an upper lamina of colored synthetic resinous material to which hair strands are tufted, and a lower lamina of relatively stiff textile netting interconnected to said upper lamina at at least the peripheral edges thereof to stiffen the same and conform it to the head of the wearer. Integrated flexible boning communicates with a forward edge of said substrate element to prevent said edge from curling.

Temko [57] ABSTRACT A wig construction in which the forwardly disposed portions of the hair strands may be parted at a desired laterally disposed location to give the appearance of the scalp of the wearer at the parting line. The wig includes a rearwardly extending foundation element of conventional netted textile construction defining'a forward edge, and a laminated substrate element interconnected to said forward edge at a rearward edge thereof, and including an upper lamina of colored synthetic resinous material to which hair strands are tufied, and a lower lamina of relatively stiff textile netting interconnected to said upper lamina at at least the peripheral edges thereof to stiffen the same and conform it to the head of the wearer. Integrated flexible boning communicates with a forward edge of saidsubstrate element to prevent said edge from curling.
1 Claim, 4 Drawing Figures Patented May 16, 1972 WIG CONSTRUCTION HAVING SYNTHETIC RESINOUS SUBSTRATE ELEMENT This invention relates generally to the field of wigs, and more particularly to an improved form thereof, in which the forwardly disposed portions of hair may be parted at a desired lateral location, wherein the parting line gives the impression of the scalp of a wearer.
'As disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 1,144,658, granted to H. B. Lombard June 29, 1915, it is known in the art to provide a toupee construction in which a parting line is fonned by incorporating into the foundation of the wig a flesh-colored gauze fabric of shape corresponding to the parting line, and attaching hairs to said gauze fabric. This construction, while not without utility, limits the location of the parting line, and when such construction is incorporated into a wig, the degree to which the hair may be arranged upon the wig is very limited.

Another object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved wig construction incorporating a laminated, forwardly-disposed substrate element including an upper lamina of flesh-colored synthetic resinous material to which hair strands are attached, and a lower lamina of a relatively stiff netted material permitting ventilation to' the scalp of the wearer and stiffening the forwardly extending peripheral edge of the synthetic resinous lamina.
Yet another object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved wig construction, in which the cost of fabrication may be of a reasonably low order, directlycomparable with existing prior art devices, thereby. permitting consequent wide sale, distribution and use.
These objects, as well as other incidental ends and advantages, will more fully appear in the progress of the following disclosure, and be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, to which reference will be made in the specification, similar reference characters have been employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The foundation elementll is of generally conventional construction, being formed of netted textile material. As is known in the art, it is most conveniently formed to include a centrally disposed member 16 and side members 17 and I8.
The centrally disposed member 16 is bounded by a forward curvilinear edge l9, arcuate side edges 20 and 21, and a rear edge 22. The side members 17 and 18 are symmetrically disposed, each including a curved upper edge 23, a discontinuous lower edge 24, and an elastic member 25 juxtaposing a cut-out 26 which accommodates the ears of the wearer. Hair is stitched into place along lines 27 in conventional patterns.
The substrate element 12 is of laminated construction, and includes a hair-bearing synthetic resinous upper substrate member 30, as well as a congruent planar supporting and stiffening member 31 interconnected "thereto along the peripheral edges thereof'The element I2 is bounded by an inner edge 32 interconnected to the forward edge 19 of the element 11 a forwardly extending outer edge 33, as well as side edges 33 and 34. o assist in the stiffening action of the member 31, which is preferably formed of nylon netting, side boning members 37 are provided as well as medially disposed boning members 38, each of which extend to the outer edge 33.
, To provide maximum ventilation or breathing with respect to the exposed scalp of the wearer, the haircovering 13 does not extend to the lower lamina, but is preferably tufted into the synthetic resinous upper member, and cemented in place.
When wearing the device 10, resiliency is confined principally to the foundation element 11, the substrate element 12 being relatively inextensible, although fully flexible. As the same extends completely across the front of the wig, the part ing line may be placed at any laterally positioned location, to disclose at the parting line an appearance of the scalp of the wearer. The outer edge is in all cases concealed by the presence of additional strands of hair on the taped binding which surrounds the same. v
I wish it to be understood that I do not consider the invention limited to the precise details of structure shown and set forth in this specification, for'obvious modifications will occur to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
I claim;
1. Wig construction comprising: a foundation element, a substrate element, and a plurality of hair strands covering said foundation and substrate elements; said foundation element having a netted textile material and adapted to cover the medial and rearward portion of the head of a wearer, and defining a forwardly positioned edge; said substrate element including plural layers, interconnected to said forwardly positioned edge at a rearward edge thereof, and including a first upper lamina of relatively thin flexible colored synthetic resinous material, and a lower lamina of relatively stiff netting, that portion of said hair strands covering said substrate element being interconnected thereto by tufting through only the upper lamina, said upper and lower laminae being substantially congruent, and interconnected to each other substantially only at the peripheral edges thereof, so that said upper lamina may be maintained in air spaced relation relative to said lower lamina when said construction is worn to afford ventilation to the scalp of a wearer.

Claims (1)

1. Wig construction comprising: a foundation element, a substrate element, and a plurality of hair strands covering said foundation and substrate elements; said foundation element having a netted textile material and adapted to cover the medial and rearward portion of the head of a wearer, and defining a forwardly positioned edge; said substrate element including plural layers, interconnected to said forwardly positioned edge at a rearward edge thereof, and including a first upper lamina of relatively thin flexible colored synthetic resinous material, and a lower lamina of relatively stiff netting, that portion of said hair strands covering said substrate element being interconnected thereto by tufting through only the upper lamina, said upper and lower laminae being substantially congruent, and interconnected to each other substantially only at the peripheral edges thereof, so that said upper lamina may be maintained in air spaced relation relative to said lower lamina when said construction is worn to afford ventilation to the scalp of a wearer.
