2 Claims, 12 Drawing Figures BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION The object of the present invention is to provide a small compound compact tool for use as a vise, clamp, metal cutter, nail puller and as a midget jack. This device can be made in size as small as 2% inches in width and 8% inches in length and is easy to handle and made of a good grade of tool steel. One of the main objects of this invention is to make one tool useful for a variety of purposes.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF VIEWS OF DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a fixed jaw mounted on a bracket with the slide rods vertical.
FIG. 2 is a view of the face of said fixed jaw on the ends of said slide rods.
FIG. 3 shows another view of the fixed jaw minus the said slide rods.
FIG. 4 shows a perspective view of the movable jaw minus said slide rods and the internally threaded cylinder.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the face and body of the movable jaw minus the said slide rods and the internally threaded cylinder.
FIG. 6 is a view of the threaded cylinder.
FIG. 7 is a view of the screw shaft assembled to the plate and threadedly engaged with the cylinder.
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of the device being used as a vise.
FIG. 9 is a view of the device being used as a nail puller.
FIG. 10 is a view of the device being used for tightening wire or as a hoist.
FIG. 11 shows how bending, kinking or tightening wire is performed with the device.
FIG. 12 is a view of the bracket.
The device shown in FIG. 1 comprises rods 31 with L- shaped jaw 12 fixed by welding to rods 31 at 29. The jaw 12 comprises an upright leg portion 14 with a beveled portion 27 terminating in a cutting edge 23. Heel portion 28 is rounded at the junction of legs 14 and 16. Leg portion 16 terminates in a beveled portion 18 with slots 19, 20 provided therein which slots may be of different width. Said slots function as nail pullers as noted in FIG. 8 wherein 57 is a nail. The central portion of leg 16 is deeply slotted at 21 and is functional as shown in FIGS. 8-11 wherein 63 is a nail to be pulled, 62 is a wire to be bent and 61 is a wire to be used as a hoist or to be stretched. Elements 58 and 59 may also be held as shown in FIG. 8.
Slidably mounted on rods 31 through apertures 30 is the movable jaw which is substantially U-shaped as noted in FIG. 1. One leg 13 of the jaw 15 terminates in a beveled portion 17', 18. The leg 13 ofjaw 15 is provided with a deep slot 22 similar to slot 21 and functions as shown in FIGS. 8-11. Opposite the beveled portion 17, 18 an upright portion 48 of jaw 15 provides a shearing edge 24 which coacts with cutting edge 23, as noted in FIG. 8, to cut a rod 60. Adjacent the intersection of 48 and leg 13 is a pair of bores 25 for reception of rods 60' to be sheared by cutting edge 23. The upper portion of 48 is formed parallel to leg 13 and provided with a pair of bores 30 for slidable reception of the rods 31.
Supported on movable jaw 15 is an internally threaded cylinder 35, as clearly shown in FIG. 1. which extends through bores 36 in the parallel portions of the jaw 15.
A plate member 46 having bores 47 therein for reception of the ends of rods 31 is fastened to said rods by nuts 32. The plate member has a bore 40 for reception of the unthreaded portion of a shaft provided with screw threads 33 which are in engagement with cylinder 35. One end of the shaft is provided with a rounded end portion 34 which engages the fixed jaw 12. The other end of the shaft is provided with a polygonal driving head portion 41. The head portion 41 is provided with a transverse bore 42 for the reception of a handle means 43 having an enlarged head 44 on one end and a nut 45 threaded on the other end thereof for removal of the handle means from the head portion.
A nut 37 with rounded shoulders 38 is threaded to shaft portion 33 on the underside of plate member 46 and locked to shaft portion 33 by means of stud 39. Nut 37 acts as a stop means to limit counterclockwise rotation of shaft 33, thus limiting the opening of jaws l5, 12.
A bracket 53 is provided for supporting the device in a horizontal position as noted in FIG. 1. The bracket is generally U-shaped in cross section with mounting holes 56 for holding the surface 53 on a planar support. The bracket is also provided with threaded bores 54 for reception of screws 51 with threaded shanks 52. The head portion of 51 engages in a counterbore in slot 49 in the fixed leg 16 for mounting the device on the bracket.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a device, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw fixedly supporting a pair of parallel rods at one end thereof, the other ends of said rods interconnected by a plate member, a relatively movable jaw slidable on said rods, an internally threaded cylinder fixed to said movable jaw, a threaded shaft 40 journaled in said plate member and threadedly engaging said cylinder, one end of said threaded shaft terminating in a rounded end portion engageable with said fixed jaw and the other end provided with a turning means, a stop nut fixedly mounted on the threaded shaft and engageable with the underside of said plate member each of said jaws terminating in a beveled end portion sloping towards each other, and the beveled end portions being provided with slots therein, the fixed jaw further provided with a transverse cutting edge at the end opposite the beveled portion and directed towards the movable jaw and in shearing relation with the rear edge of the movable jaw, the movable jaw further provided with an aperture spaced inwardly of a side edge of the jaw for supporting a work piece for shearing engagement with the transverse cutting edge of the fixed jaw.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1 further including a bracket means and mounting means for supporting the device in a fixed position on said bracket means.
