BAGKWATE R AND ANIMAL GATE.
No. 364,206. Patented June 7, 18- 87 q vi bmeob a o I I EM 70 4/ W N. PETERS P'Mvuflwgapher. Waxhingtm D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. BALTZLEY, OF ASSUMPTION, ILLINOIS.
BACKWATER AND ANIMAL GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,206, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed March 25, 1887. Serial No. 232,395. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BALTZLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Assumption, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backwater and Animal Gates; and I do declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invert tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to traps or gates for drain-tiles of that class which are designed to be placed, preferably, at the end of the tile, for excluding vermin, animals, backwater, &c., therefrom, and which will allow the water to pass out freely.
The object of the invention is the production of a simple and economical device which can be placed on the market complete and can be readily applied by the purchaser without calling in skilled labor.
The improvement consists in a self-adjusting thimble or frame, which can be quickly applied or inserted within a tile, and will expand sufficiently to hug the sides of the tile, so as not to be readily dislodged, and a gate hinged at its upper end to said frame and adapted to close the tile against the entrance of foreign matter in one direction, but will permit the drainings to pass out freely in the opposite direction. Said gate is concavo-convex and made of flexible material, so it can be opened or closed more or less to adapt it to tiles of different size.
The improvement further consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter more fully set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, parts being broken away, of the frame and gate constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an end view of a draintile provided with my improved device.
The frame or thimble A. may be of any deeign matter. section and composed of flexible material, so
sired length, and is composed of sheet mateinto which it is designed to be fitted, which in the presentinstanee is circular. The ends are normally separated, as shown in Fig. 1, but are adapted to overlap when the device is in position, as shown by Fig. 2.
The gate or valve B is hinged atits upperend to the frame, and is of such length that it illclines rearward, which will allow the water to pass out, but will exclude the entrance of for- It is concavo-convex in cross its edges can be separated or brought closer together for increasing or diminishing the width and size of the gate to suit different grades of tile.
Fig. 1 represents the device as placed on the market, and to adjust it all that is necessary is to compress the frame and push it in the end of the tile, when it will expand and hug the sides of the tile so no ordinary pressure will accidentally force it out. Previous to the insertion of the frame in the tile the gate is contracted or expanded, according as the bore of the tile may require, as will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The herein shown and described device for the purposes set forth, composed of the self -adjusting or expansiblc frame and the gate or valve hinged at its upper end thereto, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the sclfadjusting or expansible frame, of the gate concavoconvex in cross-section and composed of flexible material, whereby the sides or edges can be separated or brought closer together for adapting the gate to different grades of tile, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. BALTZLEY.
