BY WWMW ATTORNEYS United States Patent O 3,536,359 FURNITURE ASSEMBLY Paul Eugene Amos, 1132 Pennsylvania Ave., McKeesport, Pa. 15130 Filed Jan. 16, 1969, Ser. No. 791,742 Int. Cl. A47c 3/04 US. Cl. 297-462 12 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A furniture assembly comprising a plurality of articles of furniture usable independently of each other, one article of furniture being stored within another article of furniture to form an assembly which is also usable as an article of furniture, each of the articles of furniture including housings having removable lids, the lids having interengaging parts for fitting opposing faces of the lids together and forming a lid entity for the assembly. The lids of the articles of furniture are so constructed that they are reversible and interchangeable thereby permitting use on either article of furniture and exposure of either face of the lid. The assembly further affords storage space for attachments used in conjunction with the articles of furniture.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTS It is often desirable to have available for occasional use several pieces of furniture of the hassock type or the like, which pieces are frequently removed from view when not in use. The storage of these comparatively bulky articles of furniture presents a problem because of the lack of such storage space in the average home.
It is an object of this invention to provide a furniture assembly including a plurality of articles of furntiurc stored one within the other, the assembly being adaptable for use in its assembled state or disassembled for use of the individual pieces of furniture.
Another object is to provide a plurality of hassocks or the like stored one within the other, each hassock embodying removable lids, the lids having complemental interfitting parts which, in their interengaged state form a lid entity for the assembly.
A further object is to provide a furniture assembly of the character described wherein the lids are reversible for selective exposure of either face of the lids, the lids being applicable to either of the hassocks.
A further object is to provide a furniture assembly as described including attachments adapted to be stored Within the assembly for selective use with the articles of furniture.
Other objects of the invention will be understood from the following description of the presently preferred form of the present invention.

FIG. 11 is a sectional view taken along the line 1111 of FIG. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
DESCRIPTION OF FIGURES OF THE DRAWING In FIG. 1, there is illustrated the furniture assembly of the present invention which is generally designated 20, which comprises articles of furniture generally designated 22 and 24 which are illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3. For purposes of illustration, furniture assembly 20 is in the form of a hassock, and articles of furniture 22 and 24 are also of the hassock type. Although the assembly and the articles are illustrated as being of oval shape, any other suitable shape may be employed.
Hassock 22 includes a housing 26 including side and bottom walls, and legs 28 which are secured to, and depend from, the bottom walls of the housing.
A removable lid 32 is adapted for placement over the open upper end of the housing, and is complemental in shape thereto. The removable lid includes an oval shaped vertical wall 34 which, as shown in the drawings, is adapted for frictional engagement with the upper, inner periphery of housing 26. Intermediate the height of wall 34, there is provided an annular lateral extension of wall 34 forming a bead 36 along the outer periphery which serves as ornamentation for the hassock as well as providing an abutment or stop to limit the entry of lid 32 into housing 26. Within wall 34 is a solid planar surface 38, which is also disposed intermediate the height of wall 34. A cushion surface 40 is adhesively secured to or fixed in any other suitable manner within wall 34 between planar surface 38 and a terminal of wall 34. By means of this arrangement, lid 32 may be selectively placed atop housing 26 with either planar surface 38 exposed, as illustrated in FIG. 4, or with cushion surface 40 exposed, as illustrated in FIG. 2.
Hassock 24 includes a housing 42 comprising side and bottom walls, the side wall being provided with an annular bead 44 which is in proximate, spaced relation to the upper terminal of the housing side.
A removable lid is indicated at 46 and includes an ovalshaped body portion 48, the thickness of which is approximately equal to the height of wall 34 of lid 32. An annular flange or bead 50, is aflixed to the outer periphery of body portion 48, which bead is intermediate the height 3 is substantially the same size as planar surface 38 of lid 38. As shown to advantage in FIG. 9, this relationship enables the interengagement of lids 32 and 46 so that planar surface 54 may enter into the space between the upper terminal of wall 34 and planar surface 38 of lid 32, to form an interfitting engagement.
It is apparent from a consideration of the drawings that hassock- type members 22 and 24 are, by virtue of the reversible nature of lids 32 and 46, readily adaptable to expose either a cushion surface or a flat planar surface, thereby lending the article of furniture for either as a hassock or a small table. Also lids 32 and 46 may be interchangeably applied to housings 26 and 42.
It is further within the contemplation of the present invention to provide a tray 56, which is shown to advantage in FIG. 6, which tray may also be stored within the present assembly. It will be noted that, as depicted in FIG. 6, the tray is of a size that may be readily inserted into the space between planar surface 38 and the upper terminal of wall 34.
In FIGS. 7 and 8 there is illustrated another use of the assembly of the present invention, this being for use as a card table or the like. For this purpose, there are provided a plurality of leaves 58 of like construction, each of which leaves is provided with a central longitudinal slot 60. Leaves 58 are preferably complemental in shape to the shape of the hassock 22 to which they are applied. These leaves may be placed on top of housing 26 of hassock 22 in such a manner that a portion of each leaf extends from a different side of the hassock. Another leaf 62 is located centrally of the hassock, and may be provided with a planar surface such as checkerboard 64. A securing member 66 of any suitable type may be employed for joining leaves 58 and 60 together and holding them in fixed relationship to each sother. Leaves 58 and 60 are stored within the assembly when not in use.
The assembly of the present invention is preferably of molded plastic construction, with the exterior thereof either upholstered or unupholstered as desired. However numerous structural variations may be employed within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
