UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GELSTON SANFORD, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS FOR CAR-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,] 12, dated April 29, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GELsToN SANFORD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Adjustable Car-Seat Head-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation. of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an edge view. Fig. 2 is a front View showing the hooks in position to be placed upon the car-seat. Fig. 3 is a back View.
A A are upright wooden rods, their lower ends passed through the eyes of adjustable hooks B B. Said hooks B B are for securing the head-restto the back of a car-scat by having the hooks B B pass down the front side of the back of the seat, and the uprights A A pass down the back side of the back of the seat, the hooks B B being in the position shown in Fig. 2. The hooks B B may be raised and lowered upon the uprights A A, the slots C in their eyes (shown in a separate view) passing over pins D D D, which pins support hooks B B in the position desired, thus raising or lowering the head-rest to suit different heights of persons and seats.
The uprights A A may be made either rigid or elastic, and can be curved at or near their upper ends, if desired, and of any known material. Two tubes may be used of different diameters, one working inside of the other, to produce different heights; but I prefer the wooden rods first described. The
hooks B B may be secured upon the rods 01' uprights by screws, cams, keys, hinges, or in any known way; but I preferthe pins I) D D, first described.
At the top of the uprights A A, and secured to them in any known way, is a flexible strap or cushion, E, for the head to rest against or upon. In or near the center of the length of the uprights A A is a hinged cross-piece, F, to extend and keep the said uprights apart, construct-ed in such a manner that it cannot close when in use. (I prefer the carriage-top joint.) At the bottom of the uprights A A is another flexible strap, G, to keep them from spreading apart.
There are also two straps, II II, one secured to the bot-tom of each upright A A an d crossin g diagonally and secured to the top of the other upright to prevent the said uprights from swaying sidewise. \V hen the apparatus is not in use, it may be closed, (by the hinged cross-piece F,) thus occupying much less space, and as it is composed of such light material it is extremely light and portable.
lVhatl claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An adjustable portable rest for the head,
' to be attached to the back of a car-seat and so arranged that it can be folded together so as to occupy less space when not in use, substantially as specified.
GELSTON SANFORD.
