SASH-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,460, dated October 1886 Application filed August 9, 1886. Serial No; 210,443. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES .GALBREATH LESLIE, of Oregon, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 3
My invention relates to the construction of a cheap, durable, and efficient sash lock which may be applied in connection with a sash that has already been mounted, the ob ject of the invention being to provide a lock whereby the sash may be held in any desired position, and wherein the parts are so arranged that the sash may be removed from the case,
should such removal become necessary or desirable. V v
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a face view of a portion of a sash of a window-frame, the same being represented as provided with my improved form of sash-lock, parts being shown in section and Fig. *2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line x w of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 10 represents the window-casing, and 11 the upper sash. To the side face of the window-casing there is se cured a bracket, '12, in which two arms, 13, are mounted, said arms beingformed with apertures 2, and being normally held apart by the action of a spring, 14, the ends of which spring ride in recesses 3, formed in the arms 13. A rod, 15, upon the upper end of which there is a catch or shoulder, 16, is, passed through the apertures 2 of the arms 13, the arrangement being such that the spring 14 will force the jaws apart, so that the edges of the inclined defining-walls of the apertures 2 will bind against the rod and hold it in position, preventing any longitudinal movement of the rod.
To the face of the sash 11 there is secured a second bracket, 17, said bracket being formed with lugs or ears 18 between which lugs there is mounted a locking-dog, 19; This dog 19 consists, essentially, of a catch-tooth, 20, and a thumb-piece, 21, a spiral spring, 22, being arranged between the thumb-piece and the bracket 17, in position so that the catch-tooth is normally held against the bracket 17. The bracket 17 is formed with two upwa dly-eX- tending side walls, 23, between whic walls the catch-tooth 20 enters, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In operation the upper end of the rod 15 is inserted between the walls 23 of the bracket 17 and forced upward to a position so that the shoulder 16 is engaged by the catch-tooth 20 of the dog 19, the spring 22 at this time acting to hold the catch-tooth in engagement with the shoulder. I
When the parts have been adjusted, as described, the sash may be moved to the required position by grasping the extending ends 'of the arms 13 and compressing them against the tension of the spring 14, so as to permit the rod 15 to slide freely within the apertures 2 of said arms 13. After the sash has been so moved, the pressure applied to the arms 13 is relaxed, whereupon the springs 14 will act to separate the arms and cause the edges of the inclined walls of the slots 2 to bind against the rod and hold it in position against any attempted movement of the sash. WVhen it is desired to remove the sash from the window-casing, the thumb-piece 21 of the locking-dog 19 is forced inward against the action of the spring 22, thus forcing the catchtooth 20out of engagement with the shoulder 16, and the parts being so disconnected,
it will be seen that the sash may be removed from the casing in the ordinary manner.
I am aware that sash-locks consisting of pivoted and spring-pressed dogs having apertures in their ends and rods passingthrough the apertures of the said dogsis old, and I there fore do not claim such invention.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sash lock consisting, essentially, of pivotally-mounted arms formed with apertures 2, a spring, 14, arranged between the arms, a rod, 15, formed with a shoulder, 16,
and a bracket carryingMocking-dog, 19, snbmounted locking-dog, and a spring, 22, substantially as shown and described.
2. In' a sash lock, the combination, with a bracket, 12, of pivotally-mounted arms 13, 5 formed with apertures 2, aspring, 14, arranged between the arms 13, a rod, 15, formed with a shoulder, 16, a bracket, 17, a pivotally stantially as described.
