J. W. THOMPSON & J. W. GORTON.
' BRAIDED TRIMMING.
No. 358,233. Patented Feb. 22, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN NVHITFIELD THOMPSON AND JAMES WV. GORTON, OF MANCHESTER, COUNTY OF LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
BRAIDED TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,233, dated February 22, 1887,
Application filed December 1. 1586. Serial No. 220,333. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN WHIT IELD THOMPsON and JAMES WILLIAM GoRToN,both subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Braided Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relatesto improvements in braided trimmings used principally in millinery, dress-making, tailoring, and the like, or attached to the outer edge of hat-leathers or sweat-bands as top cords; and it consists, chiefly, informing, as hereinafter described, certain trimmings with a selvage or border madewith and of the same material as the outer braided covering.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the core or body of the trimming. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the finished trimming made with a selvage or border according .to our invention, the braided covering being partly removed to show the core. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar views, respectively, to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the only difference being that in this case a core is employed which is first covered with thread of any suitable material.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the body or core a may be of reed, wire, cord, or of any other suitable material. This core a is passed up either the right or the left hand head of any one of the well-known braidingmachines-such as a machine for braiding elasticprovided with two or more hollow heads, the remaining head or heads of the machine being left empty, so that when the machine is set in motion the threads with which it is supplied braid or cover the core aand form aselvage, b, at the same time.
By means of the selvage b the trimming may be attached to articles of dress, millinery, and the like, or to the leather or sweat-band of a hat or other head-covering, to form a top cord. In some cases, when the core is of uncovered india-rubber or other material liable to twist in the herein-described process of braiding, we prefer to cover it first with thread 0, as shown in Figs. at, 5, and 6. The thread 0 is plaited or twisted on the core a in a cord-ma chine, or any other well-known machine applicable for the purpose, and thus the tendency to twist is counteracted.
Both the coverings may be formed of cotton,
silk, or any suitable thread, or combination of such threads.
Having stated the nature of our invention and described the manner of performing the same, we declare that what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of core and covering 0 with the braided outer covering and selvage b, the whole constituting a trimming for garments, substantially asset forth.
The foregoing specification of our improvement in braided trimmings signed by us this 19th day of November, 1886.
