lM PR'OVEM ENT l'N FASTENINGCOVERS T OV'ULCANl'ZlNG-FLASKSr I Specification forming part ofi Letters Patent N0. 35,821, dated July 8, 1862.v
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HtYEsjof Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of N ew York, have invented anew and Improved Device for Fastening Down Covers to Vulcanizing-Vessels; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear,and exact description of .the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicatecorre sponding parts in the two figures.
Theobject of this invention is to facilitate the operation of fastening'down the covers or heads on vuicanizing vessels, such as are in general, use by dentists .for the purpose'of vulcanizing indiarubber gums or sets of teeth.
The invention consists in theemployment of two or more set-screws passing-through ascrewring, which screws onthe-npper edgeot the cylindrical vulcanizing-vessehand Wlfich'bears down on the edge of the cover in such a man- -ner that,.by* means of theset-screws acting in conjunction with the screw-riug-a perfectly steam-tight joint between the cover and cvlin- 'der is produced.
It consists,-further, in the arrangement of a flange projecting from the lower surface of the cover beyond the packing in such a manner that said flange forms a correct guide for the cover and strengthens the top edge of the cylinder.
To enable those skilled in the art to make ian'duse-my invention, I will proceed .to describe it with refererice to the drawings.
Hithertov the covers of v-ulcanizing-vessels have been secured either with bolts and nuts,
or else the cover has been screwed onto the cylinder itself. by suitable male and female screw threads. The bolts are liable to be twisted off by improper effort to'tighten the joint when the packing has becomeim perfect. While, on the other hand,'wherr the cover is made to screw onto the cylinder, thetwo surfaces, between which the packing is placed, moving in opposite directions, causes great friction and requires great power to render the joint tight"; and, furthermore, it very soon wears out or dislodges the packing substance.
These imperfections are overcome by my inventlon.
purpose specified.
The cover A is provided with a groove, a, on its under surface to receive the packingring b, and it is placed loose on the top edge of the cylindrical,vulcanizing vessel B. The edge of this vessel is strengthened .by a collar, 0, which is rigidly attached to the same, and this collar is provided with a screw-thread, d, to screw into a ring. 0, which resembles somewhat the. ordinary screw-cover with the center turned out. If the cover Ais in-the proper position, the ring 0 is placed -over it and screwed upon the screw-thread'on the edge of the collar 0 until the under sideof the ring strikes the top of the cover. The ring Cis provided with two or more set screws, e, directly over theinner edge of the packing-groove a, and it requires but one or two turns of these screws to exert the desired pressure on the cover and to close thejoint.
The cover A is provided with a flange, f, projecting from its'under sur'faceinto the cyliuder B. This flange serves to support the top edgeof the cylinder, and said edge, when under pressure, is thus embraced between the collar outside andthe flange inside, rendering it utterly impossible for the same 'to bend in and separate froxnthe collar, Without this flange the top edge of the cylinder,- which is generally made ofthin sheet-copper, is liable to knucklein under a heavy pressure and high temperaturmand the collar, together with the screw-ring, is" blow n" off.
'By the useof the screw-ring and set screws the joint can be made perfectly steam-tight,
and when tight the cover will resist any press ore to which it may be exposed,and it will not be liable to be blown off.
Having thus described my, invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by'LETters ]?atent,.is---v 1. The arrangement of two or more setscrews, e, in combination with the screw-ring G, cover 'A, and cylinder B. as and for the purpose shown: and described.
2. The projecting flange f, projecting from the under side ofthe cover'A, and catching on the inside of the cylinder B, as and for the GEO. E. HAYES.
Witnesses;
Wm KING, J r. THEODORE PALMER.
