Abstract
A WHEEL OR GEAR PULLER COMPRISING A BASE MEMBER HAVING A VERTICALLY THREADED CENTRAL PORTION, THE BASE MEMBER BEING PROVIDED AT EACH END WITH OPEN ENDED SLOTS AND A THREAD SCREW ENGAGING THE INTERNAL THREADS OF THE BASE MEMBER. SLIDABLY MOUNTED FOR LATERAL ADJUSTMENT IN EACH SLOT OF THE BASE MEMBER IS A FLATTENED SLEEVE HAVING A RECTANGULAR BOTTOM OPENING AND A SLOTTED TOP PORTION PROVIDING A SHOULDER FOR THE SUPPORT OF A FLAT DEPENDING ARM HAVING AN INWARDLY TURNED END FOR ENGAGING THE WHEEL OR GEAR, THE INNER EDGE OF EACH DEPENDING ARM HAVING A SERIES OF NOTCHES FORMING TEETH TO ENGAGE THE SHOULDER PORTION OF THE SLEEVE TO PERMIT RAPID VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT. THE SPACING BETWEEN THE DEPENDING ARMS AND THE BOTTOM OPENINGS IN THE SLEEVES ARE SUFFICIENT TO PERMIT LIMITED ROCKING MOVEMENT OF THE DEPENDING ARMS TO FACILITATE RAPID LATERAL ADJUSTMENT BUT WHEN THE DEVICE IS IN OPERATIVE POSITION AND PRESSURE IS APPLIED THROUGH THE THREAD SCREW, THE SHOULDER AND REAR EDGE OF THE BOTTOM OPENING IN THE SLEEVE OPERATE TO POSITIVELY LOCK THE DEPENDING ARMS IN POSITION.

Cl. 29-259 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wheel or gear puller comprising a base member having a vertically threaded central portion, the base member being provided at each end with open ended slots and a thread screw engaging the internal threads of the base member. Slidably mounted for lateral adjustment in each slot of the base member is a flattened sleeve having a rectangular bottom opening and a slotted top portion providing a shoulder for the support of a flat depending arm having an inwardly turned end for engaging the wheel or gear, the inner edge of each depending arm having a series of notches forming teeth to engage the shoulder portion of the sleeve to permit rapid vertical adjustment. The spacing between the depending arms and the bottom openings in the sleeves are sufficient to permit limited rocking movement of the depending arms to facilitate rapid lateral adjustment but when the device is in operative position and pressure is applied through the thread screw, the shoulder and rear edge of the bottom opening in the sleeve operate to positively lock the depending arms in position.
This invention relates to a device for pulling gears, wheels, pulleys and the like from a shaft or axle on which they are mounted.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which is effective for the purpose in question but simple in construction and readily adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of shapes and sizes of gears, wheels and pulleys mounted on shafts of different lengths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device in which the vertical adjustment may be easily and rapidly changed permitting the use of a relatively short thread screw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which includes a minimum of parts and therefore be readily manufactured, is easily handled by the average mechanic but of suflicient rigidity and ruggedness to handle the more diflicult operations.
The above and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description, preferred embodiments of which are illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification in which like characters are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
FIG. 1 is a prospective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention, one sleeve and the associated depending arm being shown in spaced relationship; and
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in 1 showing the device applied to a pulley for removing the same from a shaft; and
'FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the device shown in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view of one of the sleeves and its associated depending arm taken along the lines 44 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 5 is a sectional view showing means for locking the depending arm in operative position, taken along the lines '5--5 of FIG. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates the base member having a central portion 2 provided with internal threads 3, the base member 1 having at each end longitudinally extending slots 4 and.5 which are open at the ends.
A thread screw 6 passes through and engages the internal threads 3 in the base 1, the upper end of the thread screw 6 being provided with a nut head 7 which may be turned with a wrench to bring pressure on the shaft from which the gear, wheel or pulley is to be removed. The thread screw 6 is preferably provided with a rounded end 8 to form a bearing surface to rotate against the end of the shaft.
Slidably mounted in each slot, 4 and 5, is a flattened sleeve 9 having a shoulder 10. The sleeve members may be readily adjusted laterally to accommodate a wide variety of sizes of gears, wheels and pulleys.
Depending from each slot, 4 and 5, and passing through the sleeves 9 are flat arms 11 having inwardly turned ends 12 for engaging the gear, wheel or pulley to be removed from a shaft as illustrated in FIG. 2. The inner edge of each depending arm 11 is provided with a series of spaced notches 13 forming teeth to engage the shoulder 10 of the sleeve 9 and lock the depending arm in the desired vertical position.
It is apparent, as shown in FIG. 5, that the spacing between the depending arms 11 and the bottom openings 14 in the sleeves 9 are suflicient to permit limited rocking movement of the depending arms 11 thereby facilitating rapid lateral adjustment. However, when the device is in operative position and pressure is applied through means of the thread screw '6, the shoulder 10 and the rear edge of the slot 14 of the sleeve 9 operate to positively and rigidly lock the depending arms 11 in position. This insures positive and constant pressure being applied to the gear or wheel Which is being removed from a shaft.
The spacing of the notches in the depending arms 11 may be varied as desired. The spacings may be regular or graduated to provide the necessary degree of adjustment.
The construction disclosed provides a simple but effective looking for the depending arms but permits rapid adjustment so that the distance traveled by the thread screw 7 is held to a minimum. Moreover, this permits the use of a relatively short thread screw.
The specific forms of the invention described are preferred embodiments, it being understood that various changes in construction may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the preferred form of the invention in some detail, what is claimed is:
1. A Wheel or gear puller comprising a base member having a threaded central portion, the base member having open ended slots at each end, a thread screw engaging the threads of the base member, flattened sleeves slidably mounted for lateral movement over each slot of the base member, said flattened sleeves having a rectangular bottom opening and a slotted top portion forming a shoulder, flat depending arms passing through the slots and the bottom openings in the flattened sleeves and having inwardly turned ends for engaging the wheel or gear, the inner edge of each depending arm having a series of notches forming teeth to engage the shoulder portions of the sleeves and hold the depending arms in the selected vertical position.
2. A device of the type set forth in claim 1 in which the spacing between the depending arms and the bottom openings in the sleeves are suflicient to permit a limited rocking movement of the depending arms thereby facilitating rapid lateral adjustment but positively locking said arms in position when the device is in operative position and pressure is applied through the thread screw.
