Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL LASHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEY YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FU RNACE-G RATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,064, dated January *7, 1862.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL LASHER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Grate- Bars for Furnaces of Boilers, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my said i11- vention, reference being 'had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a plan of two of my grate-bars, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my bar.
Similar marks of reference indicate the same parts.
Several kinds of grate-bars have heretofore been constructed, in which some portions of the upper surface run crosswise of the bar, while other portions run lengthwise. Thus each bar contains several openings. In al- Inost all instances, however, these openings have their greatest length in the direction of the bar. I have found, practically, that when exposed to the heat consequent to actual use the expansion and contraction cause the cross-pieces of the bars to crack, and the bars themselves become twisted and warped, interfering greatly with the cleaning of the furnace from ashes, because the openings get choked up and cannot easily be cleaned out, being below the general surface of the grate, in consequence of the warping of the bars, and hence are not reached by the Scrapers made use of.
The nature of my said invention consists in a grate-bar for furnaces of boilers, &c., formed with two parallel side pieces, with cross-bars between of suiiicient length to cause the intervening openings to be longest widthwise of the bar. Thereby I accomplish two objects. In the first place each bar is so wide as not to be twisted by the expansion and contraction, and the cross-pieces are not broken by said expansion or contraction, being longer and in greater number than heretofore. In the second place my grate-surface becomes a series of longitudinal and transverse openings that greatly facilitate the clearing of the fire from ashes and clinkers, because the scraper either breaks up the clinkers against the cross-pieces or else clears out the entire length of longitudinal openings, .or both, in all instances not only insuring a clear bright fire, but also preserving a level grate-surface-so essential for perfect combustion.
In the drawings, d ot are the longitudinal bars; I) b, the cross-pieces, which leave the transverse openings c c in each bar itself, and d d are the longitudinal openings between the bars.
e e are lugs or projections, as usual, to keep the bars apart.
The su rface of my grate-bars may be grooved in any usual manner, as represented.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
Forming the grate-bars for furnaces of boilers, &c., with the series of openings c c crosswise of the bar, as specified, and so that these bars when placed together leave longitudinal openings between the bars, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 10th day of July, 1861.
DANIEL LASHER. Witnesses:
