Description

(NO MOdQL) M. B. GROWNINSHIELD.
DARNING LAST.
N0. 347,757. Patented Aug. 17, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY BRADFORD OROWNINSHIELD, OF WASHINGTON, D. C.
DARNlNG-LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,757, dated August 17, 1886. Application filed May 3, 1886. Serial No. $201,010. (No modelJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY BRADFORD ORowNINsHIELn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Appliance to Assistin the Operation of Darning Stockings, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention is an improvement upon an appliance to assist in darniug stockings, upon which Letters Patent were granted to me on May 15,1877, bearing No.190,745, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side elevation of the last having the clamp attached, and Fig. 2 a view of the same in use.
It consists of two partsthe last D and the clamp Lconnected by asmall piece of chain, K. The last consists of two balls, A and B, of wood or other material, of diflerent sizes, connected by a short rod, 0. The clamp consists of a small metal plate, slightly curved, with a short piece of chain, G, secured to one of its sides, the other side of this metal plate being provided with a hook, H, over which any link of the chain G may hook, when theclamp is in position, to secure the stocking about the last.
The application of this device, when used,
is as follows: The last is placed inside the stocking to be darned, using whichever ball is most suitable. then spread over the ball and the stocking secured by the clamp, which is applied outside and about the stocking between the two balls, as shown in Fig. 2.
The advantages of this device for assisting in darning stockings over the one for which I was granted Letters Patent on May 15, 1877, are, first, its having two balls, A and. B, of different sizes, making it more applicable to all sizes of stockings; second, the bar 0, connecting the two balls, furnishes a rigid support for the clamp F; third, the clamp F is more simple and cheaper than the clamp used in the device patented by me on May 15, 1877.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hole in'the stocking is The combination, in a stocking-Garner, of 5c
