Description

May 27, 1969 G. J. SALA HAIR GROOMING COMB Filed April 5, 1967 FlGl' INVENTOR GRBIEGORY J. SALA United States Patent U.S. Cl. 132-116 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hair grooming comb for dispensing a hair grooming fluid to the hair during the combing operation consisting of a cylindrical member having a reservoir, a filler cap mounted at one end of the cylindrical member, the cylindrical member being thinner walled at the mid-portion to permit flexing the side walls, a plurality of teeth in coplanar relation mounted along one side of the cylindrical member, a portion of the teeth being fine while the remainder of the teeth being coarse, a plurality of bores communicating with the reservoir positioned between the coarse teeth, and a slide valve controlling the discharge of fluid from the reservoir.
This invention is directed to combs and has as its principal object the provision of a comb which contains a hair grooming liquid which is dispensed at will during the combing of ones hair whereby the liquid will be distributed evenly through the head of hair.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a comb with a reservoir for containing any of the hair grooming liquids whatever their liquid constituency and upon squeezing the sides of the comb at the reservoir, any desired amount maybe dispensed.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hair grooming liquid containing comb which is small and compact, readily carried in ones pocket or purse and which will not permit any leakage of hair grooming liquid while stored and not in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of a comb constructed in accordance with my invention.
FIGURES 2 and 3 are top plan and end views.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 5 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of FIGURE 4.
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 refers to a hair grooming comb constructed in accordance with my invention and made by the in jection mold method of a firm yet pliable plastic material. My comb 10 consists of a cylindrical portion 11 that is hollow along its full length forming a chamber 12 enclosed at one end by a wall 13 and open at the other end 14 wherein threads 15 are formed. A threaded filler cap or plug 16 is provided with a threaded portion 17 which are threadedly mounted in the threads 15 and a head por- 3,446,216 Patented May 27, 1969 tion 18 for turning the plug 16 and sealing same against the end of the cylinder 11 to seal the chamber 12 against leakage of hair grooming liquid contained in the cylinder 11. It is to be noted that the thickness of the walls of the cylindrical portion 11 of the comb 10 is greater at the ends, than along the two sides thereof at the midportion as at 19. This construction of the cylindrical body 11 permits the user to grasp the comb 10 at the position of the thin portions 19 and squeeze the side walls 19 together to apply pressure on the body of the hair grooming liquid contained in the chamber or reservoir 12.
Mounted on the lower edge of the cylindrical body 11 is a row of teeth extending outwardly thereof, there being two groups of such teeth, one group consisting of fine teeth 20 and the other being coarse teeth 21.
In the bottom portion of the cylinder wall 11 between the base of the coarse teeth 21 and the reservoir 12 is a slot 22 which extends through the end wall 14 and receives a slide valve member 23 having a knurled head portion at .the end thereof for actuating the slide valve 23.
Between alternate teeth 21, there is a discharge opening 25 extending to the slot 22 and in alignment therewith is a plurality of openings 26 which extend between the reservoir 12 and the slot 22. Likewise, on the slide valve member 23 is a plurality of bores 27. The bores 27 are so positioned that when the slide valve member 23 is withdrawn outwardly a distance equal to that between the openings 25, 26, the bores 27 will be found in alignment with the openings 25 and 26 so that any liquid present in the chamber 12 will flow through the openings 26 and be discharged via the ports 25. In order to prevent the inadvertant withdrawal of the slide valve member 23 from the slot 22, there is provided a boss or a shoulder 28 on the upper surface of the slide valve member 23. A small clot 29 formed in the cylinder body 11 at the position of the slot 22 receives the boss 28 to permit the slide valve member 23 to slide from the extreme left position as seen in FIGURE 4 when the openings 25, 26 and bores 27 are out of alignment to the right position when they are in alignment and liquid in the reservoir 12 is permitted to flow therethrough. A pin 30 extending through cylinder body 11 in the path of the boss 28 prevents the slide valve member 23 from sliding outwardly past the position of alignment of the ducts 25, 26 and the bores 27.
In the normal use of my hair grooming comb 10, I remove the filler cap or plug 16 and fill the reservoir 12 with a hair grooming fluid. Then I replace the plug 16 and push the slide valve member 23 inwardly to its completely retracted position in order to prevent any of the hair grooming liquid from escaping through the openings 25. When it is desired to comb and groom ones hair simultaneously, the knurled head 24 of the slide valve member 23 is grasped and pulled outwardly until the boss 28 engages the pin 30. At this position the bores 27 will be in aligned position with the inlet ducts or openings 26 and the outlet ducts or openings 25. Now hair grooming liquid will be discharged from the reservoir 12 at the outlet ducts 25. Consequently while a person is combing his hair with the slide valve member 23 in the open position, the hair grooming liquid will be discharged directly onto the hair and be distributed evenly thereon while the teeth 20 of the comb 10 are passing along the strands of hair.
Also, hair grooming liquids of different consistencies ringing from thin liquids to cream-like preparations may be dispensed by my comb 10. When suing liquids in my comb 10, the liquid will flow therethrough very readily, while if heavy liquids or creams are used, then pressure applied against the sides 19 will force the hair grooming material out of the reservoir 12 to be discharged through the outlet ducts 25.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A hair grooming comb comprising a substantially hollow cylindrical body portion having an end wall at one end and a threaded plug at the other end, a plurality of teeth mounted on coplanar relation along the periphery of said cylindrical body portion, said teeth comprising two groups, one group being fine teeth, the other group being coarse teeth, a slotted portion extending from said other end of said cylindrical body portion between said reservoir and said other group of teeth, a further slot adjacent said slotted portion at said other end of said cylindrical body, ducts positioned between said lastnamed teeth and communicating with said reservoir and slide valve means slidably mounted in said slotted portion and having a plurality of bores for controlling the flow of fluid from said reservoir to said teeth of said comb, said slide valve means having a projection extending into said further slot, stop means mounted in said further slot limiting the sliding movement of said slide valve means whereby movement of said slide valve means with said projection in contact relation with said stop means places said bores in alignment with said ducts and discharge of liquid from said cylindrical body portion to said ducts while movement of said slide valve means in the opposite direction places said bores out of alignment with said ducts and prevents the discharge of grooming liquid from said cylindrical body portion.
2. The structure as recited by claim 1 wherein said cylindrical body portion is provided with a thin wall portion intermediate its end whereby upon pressure being applied on said thin wall portion fluid in said reservoir will be forcibly discharged through said ducts.
