No. 365,970 1 Claim. (Cl. 52-478) This invention relates to wall construction and particularly to insulated sheet metal wall construction.
It is an object of the invention to provide a sheet metal insulated wall construction which is stable, can be erected at low cost, and can be readily erected and dismantled with the use of ordinary tools.

FIG. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a wall construction embodying the invention, parts being broken away.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 22 in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of a clip utilized in the wall construction.
FIG. 4 is a side view of a clip shown in FIG. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the insulated wall construction embodying the invention comprises a plurality of channels 11 which form the inner wall of the building and are mounted on structural supports of the building such as horizontal girts 12 which are mounted on columns 12 by any suitable means such as bolts, screws or rivets. Each channel 11 includes a substantially flat base portion 13 and an integral plain flange 14 along one edge and a doubled back flange 15 along the other edge. The plain flange 14 of each panel is engaged and telescoped within the doubled flange 15 of the adjacent panel to form the inner wall.
The outer wall 16 comprises a plurality of panels 17 having a base 18 and integral plain flanges 19 along one edge and doubled back flanges 20 along the other edge. The flanges 19 are engaged and telescoped within the doubled back flange 20 of the adjacent panel.
Insulating material 21 in the form of batts of insulation are interposed between the walls 10, 16. The outer wall 16 is mounted on the inner wall by longitudinally and transversely spaced clips 22 made of sheet metal.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, each clip 22 comprises a base section 23, a first section 24 bent at right angles to the base section 23, a second section 25 comprising reversely bent walls 26, 27 connected by a curved portion 28, the second section 25 being bent at right angles to the first section 24 and generally parallel to the base section 23. Clip 22 also includes a third section 29 bent from the end of the Wall 27 and lying in substantially the same plane as the section 24. The upper end of the section 29 is bent inwardly toward second section 25 to form a lip 30. The base section 23 of each clip is formed with an opening 31.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, each clip is mounted on the base portion 13 of channel 11 by bolts, screws or rivets 32 extending through the opening 31 in the base section 23 of the clip. Some of the clips 22 are mounted adjacent to the reversely bent flanges 15 with the section 24 of the clip adjacent wall 33 of the doubled back flange 15 and section 25 overlying the nose or reversely bent portion of the flange 15 (FIG. 2). The plain flange 19 of the outer wall channel 17 is engaged with the lip 30 so that the section 19 lies adjacent to the section 29.
3,323,708 Patented May 23, 1967 If the panels 11 are greater in width than the panel 17, intermediate clips 22a are mounted as shown in FIG. 1 between the flanges of the panels 11.
In practice, the inner wall 11 is first mounted on the structural members 12 with the flanges 14 engaged and interlocked with the flanges 15. Clips 22 are then mounted at desired points by the use of bolts, screws or rivets 32. The insulating material 21 is then laid in the space between the flanges 14, 15. Where clips 22 are mounted intermediate the flanges 14, 15, the insulation is merely pressed over the end of the clip to pierce the insulation as shown at 22a.
Each outer panel 17 is successively mounted in position by engaging the flanges 19 with the lip portions 31. The distance between the lip portion and the section 25 is substantially equal of the height of the flange 19. The doubled back flanges 20 are pressed over the flanges 19 and sections 29 of the clips (FIG. 2). In order to insure a rigid construction, portions of the flanges 19, 20 may be punched or deformed as at 35 at longitudinally spaced points.
When it is desired to remove the outer wall, the deformed portions 35 are removed and the panels can be readily removed.
It can thus be seen that there has been provided a simple, inexpensive construction which can be readily erected and dismantled and wherein the clips 22 are simple in construction from a rigid and accurate space to the outer wall 16 relative to the inner wall 10.
I claim:
In a wall construction, the combination comprising a first Wall of channel sections of sheet metal,
each of said channel sections having a base portion with a plain flange on one edge and doubled back flange on the other edge,
said sections being hooked together with said plain flanges engaged within said doubled back flanges to form vertical ribs,
8. sheet metal mounting clip comprising a base section engaging the base portion of said channels,
a first straight section bent at a right angle to said base section,
a second section bent at a right angle from the other edge of said first section and generally parallel to said base portion of said channels,
and a third straight section extending substantially in the plane of said first section,
said second section comprising a first wall portion connected at one end to said first section and extending at a right angle thereto and a second wall portion extending generally parallel to said first wall portion and connected at one end to said first wall by a curved part and connected at the other end to said third section,
the free end of said third section being bent toward the second section to form a lip,
and a second wall comprising a plurality of panels each having a base portion,
a plain flange on one edge and a doubled back flange on the other edge,
said plain flange of said panel of said second wall being hooked beneath the lip portion of said clip,
said doubled back flange of the adjacent panel of said second wall being engaged over said lip portion u said third section of said clip and said plain flange of said first-mentioned panel of said second wall, said second wall portion of said clip extending along the base portion of a panel of said second wall,
said first straight section of said clip extending along the doubled back flange of the first wall of panel sections and said first wall portion of said clip extending over the doubled back flange,
the length of said first section of said clip being so related to the height of said doubled back flange of said first wall that the first wall portion of said clip 10 is substantially adjacent to and over the doubled back flange.
