Description
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. IIAVILAND, OF FORT DODGE, IOWVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-LEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,l95,'da ted September 3, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID A. HAVILAND, of Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster, inthe State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved mode of preventing the leg ofa boot from falling down, wrinkling, and shortening at the sides and ankles, thereby preventing lameness, irritation, soreness, and pain of the ankles and adjoining parts of the leg and foot; and I hereby declare that the following is an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of rnyinvention consists in the application of a metallic spring (or a spring of any other elastic substance) to the ankle of a boot, on both sides of the boot, to be inclosed in a folded welt on both sides of the boot-leg in the side seams, the fold of said welt to be and appear on the outside of the boot-leg.
To enable'others skilled in the art to use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my boot in any of the known manners, the side seams thereof always to be welted with a folded welt, the welt to be and appear on the outside ot' the boot, and to extend from the sole upward from four (4) to ten Within the fold of the weltlinsert the spring' Y from the top of the folded welt` the spring to be fastened at the top either by stitching or by a rivet. The spring extends above and below the ankle, thereby preventing the ankle of the boot from settling, shortening, and forming ridges and l wrinkles, which often irritate the ankle-joint, thereby causing soreness, lameness, and pain to the ankle and adjoining parts of the leg and foot.
I am aware that metallic strips have been applied to the fastenings of gaiters and shoes. My invention is confined to high boots which have no fastenings, and the legs of which do not fit so closely as to be supported by the leg or ankle of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a high boot provided on eachside witha steel spring secured on the outside of the seam in an ont.- wardly-projecting welt, all as herein shown and explained.
