LEONARD United States Patent C) I ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hasp for use with a padlock in which the padlock must beremoved and the hasp moved to an open position before the hasp can be removed from a door and its associated frame.
This invention relates generally to a hasp and particularly to a hasp for use with a padlock.
The primary objects of this invention are to provide a hasp of simple yet sturdy construction and of simple operation.
Further objects of the present invention are to provide .a hasp that can be manufactured and assembled economically for different installations with interchangeable parts; that is simple to install and operate, and that is relatively tamper-proof. I Further objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE 1 is a front elevation of a. hasp of the present invention applied to a door and illustrated with a movable plate on the hasp disposed in an intermediate position between a fully open position and a partially closed position;

FIG. 1 illustrates a door 12 and a door frame 14 on which is mounted a hasp 16 of the present invention. Hasp 16 is arranged to lock door 12 as by means of a padlock 18 (FIG. 3). Hasp 16 generally comprises an eyelet plate 20 fastened on door 12 by four screws 22, a supporting plate 24 fastened on frame 14 by four screws 26 and a movable plate 28 mounted on plate 24 by a pin 25 for vertically pivotal and horizontally 'shiftable movement. In the preferred embodiment, plates 20, 24 are made from one-quarter inch alloy steel which is case hardened to provide a very rugged construction.
The eyelet plate 20 has a fiat rectangular base portion 30 and an eyelet flange portion 32 bent outwardly from section taken on the line section taken on line 5-5 of section taken on line 6-6 of 3,317,230 Patented May 2, 1967 the lower edge of base 30 to be disposed horizontally and project forwardly of door 12. The flange 32 has a rounded edge 33 and an aperture 34 which is arranged to receive the shackle 36 of padlock 18. At an upper corner of the base 30, the upper right-hand corner as viewed in FIGS. 2 and 3, eyelet plate 20 has a lug portion 38. The lug 38 is bent outwardly of the base 30 and is spaced above the flange 32. Lug 38 serves as a stop to limit pivotal movement of plate 28 when the hasp 16 is in a fully closed position. Plate 24 is in the form of a flat strip or bar and has at its back side adjacent frame 14, a shallow recess 40 (FIGS. 4 and 5) which is elongated in a direction longitudinally of the plate 24. Plate 24 is also formed with an elongated slot 42 which opens at the front side of plate 24 and into the recess 40. The slot 42 has a height and a length slightly less than the height and length of recess 40 to form a flat shoulder 44 which extends peripherally of the top, the bottom and the right end of slot 42. The left end of slot 42 has an enlarged circular end portion 46 substantially coextensive with the end of recess 40.
Pin 25 has a flat head portion 50 and a round shank portion 52. Head 50 abuts the front of plate 28 and is fastened to the plate as by welding to provide a smooth and neat exterior appearance and make it diflicult to file or saw the pin 25 from the front of plate 28. Shank 52 extends through a suitable aperture 54 in plate 28 and at the back side of plate 28, the shank 52 has a radial groove 56 and an inner head portion 58. The diameter of head 58 is slightly less than the diameter of the slot end portion 46 so that the head 58 can be moved into and out of the recess 40 through the slot end portion 46. The dimensions of the radial groove 56 are such that the pin 25 is slidable and pivotable in slot 42. Head 58 is also slidable and pivotable in the recess 40 and is retained in place by shoulder 44. At the free end of plate 28, the right end as viewed in FIGS. 2-4, is an eyelet flange portion 60 bent outwardly at ninety degrees from the lower edge of plate 28. Flange 60 has a rounded peripheral edge 62 and an aperture 64 which receives shackle 36. Plate 28 has a length slightly greater than the combined lengths of plate 24 and plate 20. With plate 24 and plate 20 secured on frame 14 and door 12, and with hasp 16 in a fully closed position (FIGS. 3 and 4), plate 28 overlies plate 24 and the base 30 with pin 25 adjacent the right end of slot 42. The width of plate 28 including the thickness of flange 60' is slightly less than the height between the flange 32 and lug 38 so that the right end of plate 28 can slide between flange 32 and lug 38 to a fully closed position. In the fully closed position of hasp 16, lug 38 is disposed just above an upper right hand corner 65 of plate 28 to engage plate 28 and prevent pivotal movement relative to plate 20.
With plate 28 hanging downwardly in a position shown in dashed lines 68 (FIG. 3), door 12 can be moved inwardly or outwardly relative to frame 14. When it is desired to lock door 12, door 12 is closed in alignment with frame 14 and arm 28 is pivoted in a clockwise direction until flange 60 engages flange 32. Pin 50 can be shifted toward the left end of slot 42 so that plate 28 clears lu-g 38. Plate 28 is then shifted horizontally in a direction toward the right as viewed in FIG. 2 until the upper right hand corner 65 of plate 28 rides under lug 38 and aperture 64 is vertically aligned with aperture 34. The shackle 36 of padlock 18 can be inserted through the apertures 34, 64 to lock the hasp in a closed position (FIG. 3). While plate 28 is shifted, flange 60 can slide on flange 32 to guide plate 28 into a closed position. With plate 28 in the closed position, pin 25 will be well into slot 42 so that plate 28 is held securely to plate 24 by head 58 and shoulder 44. With the hasp 16 in the closed position plate 2-8 covers plate 24 and base 30 so that screws 22, 26 are concealed and inaccessible from the front of the hasp. The shackle 36 fits closely in apertures 34, 64 so that plate 28 cannot be shifted longitudinally enough to clear lug 38. To open door 12, padlock 18 is unlocked and removed. Plate 28 is then shifted to the left until the upper right hand corner 65 of plate 28 will clear lug 38 and then plate 28 is pivoted upwardly in a counterclockwise direction so that door 12 can be opened in either direction relative to frame 14.
Hasp 16 can be installed rapidly on door 12 and frame 14 in a simple manner by removing plate 28 from plate 24. Plate 20 is fastened on door 12 immediately adjacent the vertical edge of the door and plate 24 is fastened on frame 14 immediately adjacent the vertical edge of the frame with the top edge of plate 24 horizontally aligned with the top edge of plate 20. After plate 24 is fastened on frame 14, plate 28 is mounted on plate 24 by inserting the head 58 of pin 50 through the enlarged slot portion 46 and then shifting plate 28 slightly to the right to move head 58 into recess 40'.
With minor modifications to the movable plate 28 in the straight hasp 16 (FIGS. 1-6) a modified hasp 70 (FIGS. 7-10) is provided for installation in an inside corner between a door 72 and a frame member 74. The hasp 70 is substantially similar to the hasp 16, with like elements being designated by like reference numerals, except that a movable plate 78 is used in place of plate 28. An end portion 82 of plate 78 including flange 60 is bent back at ninety degrees toward the front of plate 78 to project outwardly from the supporting plate 24. The plate 78 can be formed from a plate having the same shape and dimensions as plate 28 (FIG. 1). Plate 20 is fastened on the inside of door 72 in horizontal alignment with plate 24 which is fastened on the inside of the frame member 74. When plate 78 is shifted longitudinally toward the eyelet plate 20, an upper end corner 84 on the plate 78 moves under lug 38 on the eyelet plate 20 as shown in FIG. 7 so that lug 38 restrains pivotal movement of plate 78 relative to plate 20. When plate 73 is retracted in the direction to the left as illustrated in FIG. 10, the upper corner 84 of the end portion 82 moves out from under lug 38 so that plate 28 can pivot to move flange 60 away from flange 32 as illustrated in FIG. 9.
With either of the two hasps 16, 70, described hereinabove with the hasp secured in a closed position by a padlock, a very sturdy and rigid lock is provided. The eyelet plate 20 and the supporting plate 24 in each of the hasps 16, 70 are identical and completely interchangeable whereas the movable plates 28, 78, are substantially identical except that plate 28 is straight whereas plate 78 has its eyelet end bent at a right angle to the front of the plate so that the hasp can be installed on an inside corner. Hasps for other types of installation are also contemplated by the present invention. For example, a hasp for installation on an outside corner would include an eyelet plate and a supporting plate substantially identical to the plates 20, 24 and a movable plate formed with an end portion, including an eyelet, bent at ninety degrees to the rear of the plate in a direction opposite the bent end portion 82 (FIGS. 7-10). Although the hasps described hereinabove are intended to be locked by means of a padlock to fasten a door, in certain installations the sliding plate, for example, plate 28 in hasp 16 (FIG. 1), serves as a lock bolt to prevent opening the door. For example, if as illustrated in FIG. 1, the eyelet plate 20 and the supporting plate 24 are fastened on the inside of the door 12 and frame 14 and the door 12 is an inside opening door, when the plate 28 is shifted over plate 20, door 12 cannot be opened.
It will be understood that the hasps which are herein disclosed and described are presented for purposes of ex- 4 planation and illustration and are not intended to indicate limits of the invention, the scope of which is defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. A hasp comprising a supporting plate, a movable plate and an eyelet plate, said eyelet plate having a vertical base portion, a lower eyelet portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said base portion, and an upper lug portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said base portion said eyelet portion of said eyelet plate extending outwardly beyond said lug portion, above said eyelet portion, means mounting said movable plate on said supporting plate for vertically pivotal and horizontally shiftable movement, said movable plate having a free end portion extending beyond said supporting plate with said end portion being adapted to overlie said base portion when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, said end portion having a lower eyelet portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said end portion and above said eyelet portion of said eyelet plate when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, said end portion being dimensioned to fit between said lug portion and said eyelet portion of said eyelet plate with the eyelet portion of said movable plate resting on the eyelet portion of the eyelet plate, said end portion further having an upper stop portion above said eyelet portion of said movable plate, said stop portion being disposed below said lug portion and adapted to engage said lug portion to limit pivotal movement of said movable plate when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, and said movable plate being horizontally shiftable from its fully closed position to clear said lug portion and permit pivotal movement of said movable member.
2, The hasp set forth in claim 1 wherein said movable plate is straight, said supporting plate is adapted to be mounted laterally of said eyelet plate, and said end portion shifts in a horizontal direction laterally of said base portion.
3. The hasp set forth in claim 2 wherein said movable plate has a bent end portion shiftable in a horizontal direction inwardly and outwardly of said base portion.

A hasp comprising a supporting plate, a movable plate and an eyelet plate, said eyelet plate having a vertical base portion, a lower eyelet portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said base portion, and an upper lug portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said base portion above said eyelet portion, means mounting said movable plate on said supporting plate for vertically pivotal and horizontally shiftable movement, said movable plate having a free end portion extending beyond said supporting plate with said end portion being adapted to overlie said base portion when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, said end portion having a lower eyelet portion projecting in a horizontal direction outwardly of said end portion and above said eyelet portion of said eyelet plate when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, said end portion further having an upper stop portion above said eyelet portion of said movable plate, said stop portion being disposed below said lug portion and adapted to engage said lug portion to limit pivotal movement of said movable plate when said movable plate is in a fully closed position, and said movable plate being horizontally shiftable from its fully closed position to clear said lug portion and permit pivotal movement of said movable memher, said means including said supporting plate having a slot elongated in a direction toward said eyelet plate, an enlarged recess in said supporting plate behind said slot and a pin fastened on said movable plate and extending outward and rearwardly of said movable plate through said slot, said pin having an enlarged head portion on its rear end disposed in said recess, said slot having an en- 5 6 v larged portion opening at the front of said supporting 986,465 3/1911 Kappele 292-288 plate and communicating with said recess, and said head 1,479,117 1/1924 Trimmer 292205 portion being movable through said enlarged slot portion 1,883,165 10/1932 Vegren 292-283 to enable removal of said head portion from said recess and removal of said movable plate from said supporting 5 plate.

Claims (1)

1. A HASP COMPRISING A SUPPORTING PLATE, A MOVABLE PLATE AND AN EYELET PLATE, SAID EYELET PLATE HAVING A VERTICAL BASE PORTION, A LOWER EYELET PORTION PROJECTING IN A HORIZONTAL DIRECTION OUTWARDLY OF SAID BASE PORTION, AND AN UPPER LUG PORTION PROJECTING IN A HORIZONTAL DIRECTION OUTWARDLY OF SAID BASE PORTION SAID EYELET PORTION OF SAID EYELET PLATE EXTENDING OUTWARDLY BEYOND SAID LUG PORTION, ABOVE SAID EYELET PORTION, MEANS MOUNTING SAID MOVABLE PLATE ON SAID SUPPORTING PLATE FOR VERTICALLY PIVOTAL AND HORIZONTALLY SHIFTABLE MOVEMENT, SAID MOVABLE PLATE HAVING A FREE END PORTION EXTENDING BEYOND SAID SUPPORTING PLATE WITH SAID END PORTION BEING ADAPTED TO OVERLIE SAID BASE PORTION WHEN SAID MOVABLE PLATE IS IN A FULLY CLOSED POSITION, SAID END PORTION HAVING A LOWER EYELET PORTION PROJECTING IN A HORIZONTAL DIRECTION OUTWARDLY OF SAID END PORTION AND ABOVE SAID EYELET PORTION OF SAID EYELET PLATE WHEN SAID MOVABLE PLATE IS IN A FULLY CLOSED POSITION, SAID END PORTION BEING DIMENSIONED TO FIT BETWEEN SAID LUG PORTION AND SAID EYELET PORTION OF SAID EYELET PLATE WITH THE EYELET PORTION OF SAID MOVABLE PLATE RESTING ON THE EYELET PORTION OF THE EYELET PLATE, SAID END PORTION FURTHER HAVING AN UPPER STOP PORTION ABOVE SAID EYELET PORTION OF SAID MOVABLE PLATE, SAID STOP PORTION BEING DISPOSED BELOW SAID LUG PORTION AND ADAPTED TO ENGAGE SAID LUG PORTION TO LIMIT PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF SAID MOVABLE PLATE WHEN SAID MOVABLE PLATE IS IN A FULLY CLOSED POSITION, AND SAID MOVABLE PLATE BEING HORIZONTALLY SHIFTABLE FROM ITS FULLY CLOSED POSITION TO CLEAR SAID LUG PORTION AND PERMIT PIVOTAL MOVEMENT OF SAID MOVABLE MEMBER.
