JACK ADAPTER FOR HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS Filed May 27, 1965 /lf/ la 25 INVENTOR` Cd/Vay /7 iaszcol BY Gene W @Meno/en 777 fP/Yfy United States Patent Oiiice 3,317,188 JACK ADAPTER FOR HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS Calvary M. Linscott, Sloan, Iowa 51055, and Gene W. Brenden, Hoi-nick, Iowa 51026 Filed May 27, 1965, Ser. No. 459,255 1 Claim. (Cl. 254-133) Our invention relates t-o a jack adapter for hydraulic cylinders.
An object of our invention is to provide an arrangement in the form of adapters whereby the usual hydraulic cylinder of a tractor can be used for jacking or raising purposes for raising heavy tractors, etc. whenever desired.
A further object of our invention is to provide adapters which will accommodate various cylinders.
A further object of our invention is to provide an arrangement which will accommodate cylinders of various diameters and the like.
With these and other objects in view, ou`r invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of our device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in our claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE l is Ia sectional view the lines 1 1 of FIGURE 2,
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of FIGURE 1,
FIGURE 3 is an end view of a portion of FIGURE l,
FIGURE 4 is a detail, and
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of the base adapter when using a cylinder of a different construction.
Our invention contemplates the provision of adapter units which can be readily attached to the standard hydraulic cylinder portions of a tractor and whereby the cylinder can be used for raising heavy units such as ytractors and the like whenever desired.
In describing our invention we have used the character to designate `generally by dotted lines a unit hydraulic cylinder having the bracing rods 11 and the hydraulic pipes 12 for operating the cylinder, the character 13 indicating a pist-on rod attached to a suitable piston within the cylinder, the rod 13 terminating in the yoke 14, the yoke portion 14 having the extending ears 15 through which ears pass the usual pin 16, the character 17 indicating the base portion of the cylinder having the ears 18 and ra further pin 19.
The character 20 indicates the base member adapter having the base portion 21 which extends into the integral substantially cylindrical portion 22 having the cylindrical opening 23, the character 24 indicating a cutaway portion of the member 22. Mer-ging integrally with the base 21 is a boss 25 having the arcuate portion 26 which is adapted to receive the transverse pin 19 of the cylinder structure.
The character 27 indicates an upper adapter member having the portion 28 substantially roughened as at 29, and the member 27 includes the side portions 30 tapering as at 31 so that they will firmly engage the member 14 at 32. The portions 31 merge into the further arcuate portion at 33 which is adapted to receive the transverse pin 116.
The use of the adapters and is explained :as follows.
When the device is to be used as a jack for raising purposes the cylinder is removed from the tractor and from the attachments, :and the lower pin 19 is placed in the cavity 26 as shown, and the upper pin 16 is placed in the taken generally along =is obvious from the drawings 3,317,188 Patented May 2, 1967 cavity 33. The member 27 is placed beneath the structure to be raised, and is thereby maintained in iirm position as well as the lower end of the cylinder, and the oil is then fed hydraulically in the usual manner through the pipe 12 which thereby will provide the necessary power for the raising action. The abutment of the upper member 27 at 32 :against the portion 14 provides a rigid structure at this point, and also since the diameter at 23 is just enough to clear the periphery of the cylinder elements, the lower end will be securely held, so that during the jacking operation a secure support is provided.
As shown in FIGURE 4, if desired adapters can be used wherein the character 34 indicates a cylindrical adapter which is received within the opening 23, the adapter having the further opening 35 and the annular ledge 36, this arrangement thereby permitting the use of smaller diameter cylinders, it being obvious that any number of `adapters can be used as desired.
FIGURE 5 illustrates the use of the lower adapter portion wherein the cylinders 10 have the inlet pipes 37 entering at the bottom of the cylinder, the spacing at 24 permitting the entrance of such pipes, the adapter thereby permitting use of both types of cylinders and of various diameters. The adapters 35, when used with the arrangement shown in FIGURE 5, can be iirst placed at the upper end of the cylinder structure and thence lowered whereby the ledge 36 will rest on the member 34, or the adapters 35 could have similar cutout portions as at 24 if desired.
It will now be noted that we have provided the advantages mentioned in the objects of our invention with further advantages being apparent.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of our invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of our invention, and it is our intention to cover by our claim any modiiied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
We claim as our invention:
A jack `adapter for hydraulic cylinders comprising a base portion including a cylindrical member adapted to receive the lower end of said hydraulic cylinder, an upper portion adapted to engage the piston rod attaching pin of said hydraulic cylinder, said base portion including a base wall, a boss attached to said wall, said boss having an arcuate portion adapted to receive the lower attaching pin of said hydraulic cylinder, said boss being received bctween the extending ears of said hydraulic cylinder, said upper portion including integral downwardly diverging portions adapted to snugly engage the piston rod yoke of said hydraulic cylinder, and being received between the extending ears of said yoke, said hydraulic cylinder member having `a cutaway portion for providing reception of hydraulic hoses therein, Iadapters of lesser diameter than said hydraulic member being received in said cylindrical member for accommodating smaller diameter hydraulic cylinders.
