(Cl. 72-243) The present invention relates to a rolling machine, especially a machine for transverse rolling, having wedge shaped rolling ridges. My machine or rolling mill comprises two working rolls with forming tools, and an object of the invention is an arrangement for the radial adjustment of at least one of the rolls.
In known rolling machines with one stationary and one adjustable roll a gear box with the mot-or is usually situated outside the machine. The torque is transmitted from the gear box to the shafts of the working rolls by means of shafts provided at both ends with universal joints. The main drawback of such arrangement is that the prior machines occupy a large floor area.
The rolling machine having a drive of .the rolls according to the present invention eliminates this drawback and is characterized in that the rolls are immovably mounted on hollow shafts through which pass driving spindles that have at both ends elastic coupling elements which are connected positively .at one end with hubs of driving gears and at the other end with flanges of the hollow shafts.
An advantage of my novel arrangement is its compactness permitting a considerable reduction of the floor space needed.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a rolling machine in which the shafts carrying the working rolls, rather than the rolls themselves, are radially adjustable relative to each other.
The machine according to the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a side view of the rolling machine, FIG. 2 is a longitudinal section of this machine. FIGS. 3 and 4 show the elastic coupling element in plan View, and FIG. 5 is a section through the coupling elements of FIGS. 3 and 4.
The rolling machine of the invention comprises an upper roll 2 and a lower roll 4 fixedly mounted firmly on hollow shafts 15, 17. The upper hollow shaft 15 is mounted in fixed bearings 3 while the bottom hollow shaft 17 rotates in bearings 5 which are adjustable by means of adjusting screws 6 and nuts 7. Through the hollow shafts 15, 17 pass driving spindles 16, 18. The upper driving spindle 16 has mounted thereon at its ends coupling elements 9 one of which is fastened by bolts to the hub of a gear 8 and the other to the flange of a upper hollow shaft 15. The gear 8 is mounted for rotation on the upper hollow shaft 15. The lower driving spindle 18 is provided with elastic coupling elements 13 one of which is attached to the hub of a gear 12, the other being attached to a flange of the lower hollow shaft 17. The gear 12 is rotatably mounted on a sleeve 14 fixed on the machine frame. The gears 8, 12 are in mesh with a gear 11 which is driven from a motor (not illustrated) through a clutch and a gear box 10. The elastic coupling elements 13 are formed by sheet metal strips and are keyed to the driving spindle 18. They are provided with holes for bolts connecting them 3,304,759 Patented Feb. 21, 1967 with the hub of the gear 12 and the referred to flange of the hollow shaft 17, respectively.
The stationary location of the upper hollow shaft 15, gear box 10, and sleeve 14 ensures a constant axial spacing of the gears 8, 11, and 12 which must continuously remain in unchanged meshing relation. Otherwise the clearances between the teeth of the gears would permit a relative angular displacement of the rolls 2, 4 with resulting adverse influences on the rolling operation.
The arrangement described permits, however, to adjust radially within certain limits the lower roll 4, and thus the rolls 2 and 4 relative to each other, by means of adjusting screws 6 to set the required distance of the working surfaces of the forming segments 1. The upper roll is not adjustable so that the shaft 15 need not be hollow, and the gear 8 could be keyed on it. Since, however, the lower driving spindle 18 cannot have such a large diameter as to eliminate its torsion, the drive of the upper roll is, in view of the required equal angular speeds of the two rolls 2, 4, preferably the same as for the roll 4.
I claim:
1. A rolling machine comprising (1) at least a single pair of coacting working rolls,
(2) a first and a second shaft, said shafts fixedly supporting said pair of rolls and being rotatably sup ported, said first shaft being hollow,
(3) a first driving spindle passing through said first and hollow shaft,
(4) gear means for transmitting motion to said shafts,
said gear means including a first gear wheel,
(5) first elastic coupling means on said first driving spindle, coupling one end of said first driving spindle and said first gear wheel,
(6) second coupling means on said first driving spindle, coupling the other end of said first driving spindle and said first shaft, and
(7) adjusting means for transversely adjusting said first shaft and thus said shafts relative to each other.
2. In the rolling machine according to claim 1, said second shaft being also hollow, bearings rotatably supporting both hollow shafts, a second driving spindle passing through said second hollow shaft, said gear means further including a second gear wheel, further elastic coupling means coupling one end of said second driving spindle and said second gear wheel, and coupling also the other end of said second driving spindle and said second hollow shaft, said adjusting means being provided to act upon the bearings of said first hollow shaft.
3. In the rolling machine according to claim 2, each of said hollow shafts being provided at one end with flange means, the elastic coupling means which couple one end of each of said first and second driving spindles and the respective hollow shaft being secured to the respective flange means.
4. In the rolling machine according to claim 2 having a frame, a sleeve mounted on said frame so as to allow said first driving spindle to pass therethrough and have an end portion thereof project beyond said sleeve, said first elastic coupling being mounted on said end portion.

Claims (1)

1. A ROLLING MACHINE COMPRISING (1) AT LEAST A SINGLE PAIR OF COACTING WORKING ROLLS, (2) A FIRST AND A SECOND SHAFT, SAID SHAFTS FIXEDLY SUPPORTING SAID PAIR OF ROLLS AND BEING ROTATABLY SUPPORTED, SAID FIRST SHAFT BEING HOLLOW, (3) A FIRST DRIVING SPINDLE PASSING THROUGH SAID FIRST AND HOLLOW SHAFT, (4) GEAR MEANS FOR TRANSMITTING MOTION TO SAID SHAFTS, SAID GEAR MEANS INCLUDING A FIRST GEAR WHEEL, (5) FIRST ELASTIC COUPLING MEANS ON SAID FIRST DRIVING SPINDLE, COUPLING ONE END OF SAID FIRST DRIVING SPINDLE AND SAID FIRST GEAR WHEEL, (6) SECOND COUPLING MEANS ON SAID FIRST DRIVING SPINDLE, COUPLING THE OTHER END OF SAID FIRST DRIVING SPINDLE AND SAID FIRST SHAFT, AND (7) ADJUSTING MEANS FOR TRANSVERSELY ADJUSTING SAID FIRST SHAFT AND THUS SAID SHAFTS RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER.
