Description
E. BRUNO Feb. 7, 1967 BRASSIERE Filed Feb. 15, 1965 livin willi ATTORNEY United States Patent O T 3,302,649 BRASSIERE Enrico Bruno, Brooklyn, NX., assigner to Maidenform, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Feb. 15, 1965, Ser. No. 432,779 2 Claims. (Cl. 12S-487) In brassiere constructions, a given size may suit a certain womans bust, whereas her rib cage may be larger or smaller than the standard size. It is customary to provide an adjustment for the back bands of the brassiere, but the said adjustment in the back of the brassiere does not help the said conditions with respect to the rib cage area. lf a woman who applies a brassiere of the standard size for her bust size, and yet the woman is too slender or too fleshy, then by securing the adjustment in the back of the brassiere and working the front adjustment Linder the cups provided by the present invention, her individual requirements will be met.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE l is a perspective view, looking at the front, the brassiere constituting an embodiment of the invention, the shoulder straps being broken away;
FIGURE `2 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 2 2, FIGURE l;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3, FIGURE l.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the brassiere is constructed with two cups i, joined at the vertical center of the brassiere at 2. Seamed to each cup is a back band, the back rband 3 carrying an elastic member 4 provided with hooks 5, and back band 3 carrying strip 6 provided with a plurality of rows of eyes 7 to receive the hooks and provide adjustment.
Seamed to the Vbase margin of each cup is a strip of fabric, longitudinally folded upon itself to provide normal concealing flaps 8 for a row of eyes 9, the latter being preferably secured to reinforcing strip 1t), as shown in FIG. 2.
In the present embodiment, the said folded strip fabric has its free end area extended, as shown at 8x, and the extended areas are lead through ring 11 at the center line of the brassiere. Each extended area 8X carries a hook at its outer end, as indicated at 12.
It will be understood that the brassiere may carry shoulder straps as indicated at 14, although in some Cases they will not be used.
When the brassiere is applied to the Woman, the brassiere being normal for her bust, and because of her slender figure her rib cage is smaller than standard size, the bras- 3,3%,549 Patented Feb. 7, 'i967 siere is rst hooked at the back to draw the cups over the bust area, whereupon the woman can work the front adjustment under the cups, tightening them to suit her individual requirements. In cases where the rib cage of the woman is larger than the indicated bust standard size, she can work the front adjustment under the cups to suit her own individual requirements.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and yarrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A brassiere comprising a pair of cups joined at the center line of the brassiere, a back band seamed to each cup, interconnecting means for the back bands, and a exible strip secured at one end to each of said back bands and seamed to the lower margin of each cup, each strip having an elongated reversely folded extension, a connecting member located at the vertical center line of the brassiere `and adapted to receive and permit folded sliding movement of both strip extensions, a plurality of eyes carried by sai-d iiexible strip below each cup, and hook means carried at the end of each strip extension whereby the strip may be hooked into adjustment with any of its plurality of eyes.
2. A brassiere comprising a pair of `cups joined at the center line of the brassiere, a back band seamed to each cup, interconnecting means for the back bands, and a exible strip secured at one end to each of said back 'bands and seamed at its upper edge to the lower margin of each cup, said strip being folded upon itself at each longitudinal margin to provide flaps, each strip having an elongated reversely folded extension, a connecting member located at the vertical cent-er line of the brassiere and adapted to receive and permit folded sliding movement of both strip extensions, a plurality of eyes carried by the strip for each cup, and hook means carried at the end of each strip extension whereby the strip may be hooked into adjustment with any of its plurality of eyes, `and flaps of the flexible strip being adapted to substantially hide said eyes.
