MACHINE FOR CUTTING MEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,834 dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed November .2, 1885. Serial No. 181,646.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Cutting Heat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the construction of the machine for cutting up plastic or yielding substances for which Letters Patent No. 271.398 were granted, January 30, 1883, to the Enterprise Manufacturing Company, of Pennsylvania, as my assignees. Oertai n improvements on said machine which are illustrated in this application form the subject of an application for Letters Patent filed by me December 15, 1884, Serial No. 150.375.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a cutting-machine enibodyiug my present improvements, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of several of the parts.
Eis the outer shell or casing of the ma chine, corrugated longitudinally, as described in my said patent, and provided with the usual hopper, K. The inner end of the casing is secured to and closed by a plate, at, which, by preference, forms part of the stand Y. to sup port the entire machine. This stand is shown as constructed for being clamped or otherwise secured to a table, for the machine illustrated is designed to mince or cut.- up meat, and is intended forfamily or stotekeepers use. The outer end of the casing E is closed by a perforated plate, A, which is adapted to a seat in the end of the casing, and is held in place by a screw-ring, B, the perforated plate being prevented from turning by a pin, i, on the casing, adapted to a recess, 9', in the perforated plate. 'To a square or many-sided projection, p, at the opposite end of the feed-screw is adapted the knife D, which I have shown in the present instance as provided with four blades hearing against the inner face of the perforated end plate, to produce a cutting action in connection therewith.
In constructing my previous machinesjn the larger sizes I have found that, owing to the varying side pressure of the material on the feed-screw, the latter will in time out or wear away the interior of the casing E, so that the outer end of the screw and the k nife will, when the handle is turned. describe a planetary motion, and consequently it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to keep the cutting-edges of the knife up against the perforated plate A. To overcome this difficulty 1 form on the outer end of the feed-screw W ajournal, d, and in the plate A a bearing, 0:, for this journal (1. This necessitates the passage of the journal (I through the center of the knife; but I still retain in the outer side of the knife the convex recess 10, with its side openings, forthe purpose described in myaforesaid application for patent.
The bearing may be formed in one piece with the plate A. or may he a separate piece, as
illustrated in the drawings, secured to the plate in any convenient manner.
I makethebearing in the form of a projection for the twofold reason that a longer hearing is thus provided, and at the same time a handle is afforded for the manipulation and removal of the plate when desired, as described in my aforesaid application.
I claim as my invention The combination of the casing and the feedscrew, having a knife and carrying at its outer end ajournal, d, with a perforated end plate, A, against which the knife cuts, the said perforated plate having a bearing, 00, for the said journal, substantially as set forth.
