(Cl. 22927) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A set up folded display and utility receptacle has a front panel with upper and lower horizontal edges and opposite side edges, with pocket panel structure extending from a bend joint along one of the horizontal edges and defining at the rear of the front panel at least one upwardly opening article-receiving pocket and including a rear panel. The pocket panel structure may comprise a fan-folded arrangement defining a plurality of article-receiving pockets. Retaining panel means integral on a bend joint along at least one of the side edges of the front panel provides narrow side panels extending rearwardly from the front panel in closing relation to the sides of the pocket panel structure and provides a retaining means. Such retaining means may be in the form of a tubular retaining structure about the pocket panel structure.
This invention relates to novel folded hang-up display and utility receptacles constructed of folded sheet material in accordance with carton or box making techniques.
While hang-up displays are known comprising merchandise packaged in plastic bubbles, slotted panels on which merchandise is carried, and the like, I am not aware of any prior hang-up type of display and utility receptacles which can be readily folded up from creased or scored blanks to provide one or more upwardly opening pockets receptive of various types of articles.
It is, accordingly, an important object of the present invention to provide a new folded sheet material blank receptacle structure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel, low cost folded display and utility receptacle construction adapted for a large variety of uses for merchandising articles, as premium dispensers, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new folded hang-up display and utiilty receptacle construction of substantial versatility enabling numerous variations to meet different requirements but retaining the same general structural format.
Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description of certain preferred and exemplary embodiments thereof taken in conjunction with the accompanyin g drawings in which:

In all forms of the folded display and utility receptacle of the present invention a one-piece sheet material blank is utilized, providing various panels integrally connected together and when folded including a front panel having, in an upright position of the receptacle, upper and lower horizontal edges and opposite side edges. A panel structure is integrally bendably joined to one of the horizontal edges of the front panel and defines at the rear of the front panel an upwardly opening article-receiving pocket. Retaining panel means are integral on a bend joint along at least one of the side edges of the front panel and engaged with the pocket-defining panel structure, and having narrow closing panels extending rearwardly from the front panel in closing relation to the sides of the pocket. Desirably a portion on at least one of the panel structure and the retaining panel means includes an aperture therethrough for receiving a hanger whereby the receptacle is adapted to be supported on a merchandise display rack or may be hung up by the user as a utility receptacle such as to maintain within convenient reach utility articles, i.e., for toilet articles, shoe bufiing cloths, reference materials such as culinary recipe cards, strip first aid bandages, etc., to serve as a trash or discard item receptable, i.e., for gum wrappers, cleansing tissues, razor blades, etc. The devices are also handy in various ways as dual purpose article supply and discard receptacles, with multiple pockets contributing to the duality of function. Because of the low cost of the advantageous receptacle construction, it affords a desirable premium or give-away promotional or advertising medium, or sales packet for direct counter or coin operated dispenser merchandising. These brief examples will indicate the wide utility and versatility of receptacles embodying features of the present invention.
A representative form 20 of the receptacle (FIGS. 1-5) includes a rectangular front panel 21 having attached along a suitably creased or scored hinge fold 22 on one horizontal edge, herein the top edge, panel structure arranged to provide one or more, in the illustrated instance, two upwardly opening pockets. For this purpose the pocket-forming panel structure includes a panel 23 extending from the fold joint 22 and of substantially the same area as the front panel 21. Along its lower edge, the panel 23 is joined along a creased bend 24 with a narrow coextensive pocket bottom panel 25 which is joined at its opposite edge along a juncture bend crease 27 with an upwardly extending panel 28, having its opposite edge joined along a coextensive juncture fold score or crease 29 with a downwardly extending similar panel 30. At its lower edge the panel 30 is joined along a juncture bend 31 with a narrow coextensive pocket bottom panel 32 joined at its opposite edge along a coextensive creased or scored juncture bend 33 with an upwardly extending rear panel 34. Although the several panels 23, 28, 30 and 34 may be of various height dimensions to provide various pocket depths or relative upward projections of the panels, as may be preferred, they are all shown in the receptacle device 20 as of substantially equal area. Also, the pocket bottom panels 25 and 32 may be selectively omitted or varied as to width, as preferred. Desirably the rear pocket panel 34 has joined thereto along a fold line 35 a hang-up panel 37 adapted to be raised from a position folded down along the back of the rear panel 34 as shown in dotted lines in FIGURE 2, into upstanding position wherein a hanger aperture 38 in its distal margin adapted to receive a supporting hanger projection or hook 39 on a display rack 40, wall or other supporting structure.
For retaining the device in setup condition, retaining panel means integral with at least one of the side edges of the front panel 21 are provided. In this instance, the receptacle device 20 includes two similar retaining panels 41 and 42 constructed and arranged to engage the pocketforming panel structure. To close the sides of the pocket or pockets of the receptacle and accommodate the desired thickness of the device, each of the retaining panels 41 and 42 is connected to the respective side edge of the front panel 21 by means of a respective thickness gaging, connecting panel 43 which joins the front panel on a juncture bend 44 and joins the associated retaining panel on a juncture bend 45. In the assembly, the narrow vertical panels 43 oppose the free edges of the pocket-forming panels and close the sides of the pockets. The retaining panels 41 and 42 extend in retaining engagement across the back of the back panel 34 and are connected together, in this instance separably, at their free ends. One convenient connecting means comprises having the panels 41 and 42 of such relative lengths as to overlap at their free ends (FIG. 2), with one of them, herein the panel 42, having a latching tongue 47 which retainingly engages in a complementary slit 48 in the other flange 41.
By virtue of the relatively foldable and bendably related panel arrangement, the receptacle device 20 can be inexpensively produced from low cost materials such as cardboard or lightweight box board by simple die cutting and creasing or scoring for mass production. Setting up the blanks from flat condition is a simple, rapid panel folding and bending operation and the single tongue and slot connecting means on the retaining panels completes the setting up manipulation. For packing and shipment of a quantity of the receptacles 20 in compact setup condition, the hang-up panel 37 may be folded in between the back panel 34 and the retaining panels 41 and 42. From this position, the hang-up panel 37 can be readily released and turned up, by opening the retaining panels 41 and 42, which can then be quickly reclosed by reinsertion of the retaining tongue 47 into the slot 48. It will be apparent, of course, that outer faces of the various panels such as the front panel 21 and the back panel 37 may be suitably imprinted with advertising, explanatory or descriptive texts and illustrations, decorative material, and the like.
Within the pocket or pockets .of the device objects may be loosely received, or means may be provided for retaining objects therein against unintentional displacement. For example, integral spaced article-retaining straps may be provided on certain of the panels. By way of example, the pocket-forming panel 28 is shown as provided with suitable spaced parallel vertical slits 49 to afford spaced parallel coextensive straps 50 for retaining a flat elongated article 51 in a horizontal position within the front pocket. To similar effect, spaced parallel sets of horizontal slits 52 provide coextensive spaced narrow article retaining straps 53 on the rear panel 34 and by which an article 54 is adapted to be retained in vertically slidably inserted relation .on such panel. Various combinations of the vertical and horizontal integral retaining straps 50 and 53 may be provided on any or all of the pocket-forming panels, and on the front panel 21, as desired.
For handling convenience, and to afford additional or alternative advertising and display indicia or information, the receptacle device 20 may be inserted in an enclosing complementary tube or sleeve 65 (FIG. 6) into and out of which it may be readily slipped.
In the embodiment of the invention depicted in FIG- URES 7-11, a display and utility receptacle 57 embodies an arrangement of panels folded up and bent from a single blank of sheet material, similarly as the receptacle structure 20. A rectangular front panel 58 has foldably integrally connected to one of its horizontal edges, in this instance its lower edge, pocket-forming panel structure including a panel 59 providing with the back of the front panel one upwardly opening pocket. Foldably connected to the upper edge of the panel 59 is a downwardly extending panel 60 connected at its lower edge on a bend juncture with a narrow pocket bottom panel 61 joined on a bend juncture with an upwardly extending rear panel 62 having foldably connected to its upper edge a hang-up panel 63. At the side of the edges of the front panel 58 it has integrally connected thereto on respective bend lines pocket side closure narrow vertical panels 64 to one of which is attached a retaining panel 65 carrying on its free margin a bendable retaining clip 67 to be engaged through a complementary latching hole 68 in an overlapping free end margin portion of a second retaining flange 69 bendably joined to the pocket closure flange 64 on the opposite side of the receptacle.
In addition to a hanger receiving hole 70 through the central portion of the upper margin of the hang-up flange 63, such margin is desirably slit along an angular line 7-1 aligned with the hole 70 to provide a bendable tab 72. By bending the tab 72 along a lower scored or creased bend juncture 73, the tab is adapted to be displaced substantially as shown in FIGURE 7 to afford an enlarged opening to receive a larger hanger support than may be accommodated through the hole 7t). As a further convenience in hanging up the receptacle 57, it is shown as provided with a hang-up flange or tab 74 separated from the lower margin of the panel 63 along a generally U- shaped slit 75 but joined integrally to the upper edge of the panel 62. A hole 77 through the tab 74 receives a hanger member on which it may be desired to hang the receptacle 57 where the height of the panel 63 is not desired. In such instance the panel 63 may be left in the folded position indicated by dash outline in FIGURE 8. On the other hand, the panel 63 may be omitted entirely, if preferred, and the tang-up tab flange 74 alone utilized. To enable hanging the device on a support such as an automobile inside door operating handle, window operating crank, or the like, having an obstruction to passage through the hole 77, a slit 78 is desirably provided from the outer edge at one side of the tab 74 in the hole 77 thus separating the tabs into a resiliently flexible upper hook portion which can be deflected to enable reception of the supporting member by lateral passage thereof into the hole 77.
To enable closing of the tops of the pockets defined by the device, closure flange means are desirably provided, comprising a narrow closing flange 79 coextensive with the upper edge of the front panel 58 and joined thereto on a bend juncture 80. The width of the flange 79 is such that in the fully assembled condition of the device, as shown in FIGURES 7 and 8, it will completely close the top of the upwardly opening pockets. To retain the closing flange 79 in closing position, it is desirably provided with a tuck-in terminal flange 81 along its free edge, joined to the closing flange on a bend juncture 82 and arranged to be tucked in between the panels 60 and 62.
In FIGURE 12 a folded display and utility receptacle 57 embodies a construction which in most respects is the same as the receptacle 57 and to the extent of identity, the elements thereof are identified by primed reference numerals, without further description. A significant difference in the device 57' resides in provision of an upstanding generally U-shaped handle 83 formed as an integral upward extension from the fold juncture at the top of the panel 59. For this purpose the handle may be separated from the panel joined to the panel 59' and folded to the back thereof, in the manner of the panel 60 in the receptacle 57. A closure flange 84 is integrally attached to one of the pocket closing panels 64' along a bend juncture 85 and is of a width and length to close the upwardly opening pockets of the device. A longitudinal handle clearance slot 87 is provided in the flange 84, and it desirably has a downturned tuck-in terminal 88 on its free end which is adapted to be tucked closingly between the side of the panel 59' and the pocket-closing panel 64 on the opposite side from that to which the closure flange 84 is attached.
FIGURE 13 depicts a folded display and utility receptacle according to the principles of the present invention in which a front panel 90 has integrally foldably attached thereto its lower edge pocket-forming panel structure including an upwardly exending panel 91 joined at its lower edge to the front panel and connected at its upper edge foldably to a downwardly extending panel 92 connected at its lower edge to a narrow pocket bottom panel 93 from which extends upwardly a rear panel 94 having an upward extension hang-up panel 95 thereon including a hang-up hole 97. It will be understood that the described panels are connected together by fold or bend junctures suitably creased or scored. Connected to the side edges of the front panel 90 by respective pocket side closing narrow panels 98 are respective retaining panels 99 and 100, one of which has a retaining or latching tongue 101 and the other of which has a tongue-receiving slot 102. In this receptacle 89 the top edge of the front panel 90 has joined thereto in a suitable bendable juncture a pocket top closing flange 103 from the central portion of which extends a closure retaining tongue 104 joined to the edge of the flange 103 on a bend line 105 and arranged to extend through a complementary slot 107 in the upper edge of the rear panel 94. Thereby, the tongue 104 can be bent down behind the panel 94 and is lockingly retained by the retaining panels 99 and 100 when they are secured together by the tongue and slot latch 101, 102. This is a desirable arrangement to prevent pilfering of contents of the receptacle when it is hung on a merchandise display rack.
FIGURE 14 depicts a one-piece folded display and utility receptacle arrangement embodying various features which may be selectively utilized and, in general, representing an arrangement suitable for game, souvenir, character symbolization, and like purposes. To this end, the device 108 includes a front panel 109 foldably attached along its upper edge to a downwardly extending pocket forming panel 110 which is connected at its lower edge foldably to an upwardly extending pocket forming panel 111, foldably attached at its upper end to a downwardly extending pocket forming panel 112 connected by means of a bendably joined narrow pocket bottom panel 113 connected to an upwardly extending back panel 114 foldably attached along its upper edge to a hang-up panel 115 provided with a hang-up hole 117. Along its side edges, the front panel 109 is connected by narrow pocket side closure vertical panels 118, joined thereto along suitable bend lines to respective retaining panels 119 and 120 adapted to be overlapped behind the rear panel 114 and releasably secured together by a tongue 121 extending from the free edge of one of the panels into a latching slot 122 in the adjacent margin of the other of the retaining panels. Along its edges and margins, the front panel 109 may be provided with shaped extensions depicting any desired form or structure representation, of which a flange 123 shaped on the order of a human hand is depicted as joined to one side edge of the panel 109, having been derived from materials lanced from the retaining flange 119 and the adjacent narrow connecting flange 118. Along its lower margin, the front panel 109 may be provided with suitable cutouts to depict, for example, legs and feet flange projections 124 for the stylized figure representation. A window 125 may be provided in the front panel 109. For a head on the figure represented by the front panel a top closure and latching flange 126 may be derived by lancing the same from the panel 110, and including a bendable latching flange extension 127 which is adapted to extend in the fully assembled relationship of the device through a slot 128 in the hang-up flange adjacent to juncture with the back flange 114, in similar fashion as described for the latching flange 104 of the device 89 in FIGURE 13.
In'the closed condition of the device 108, pocket top closing flange extensions 129 attached along bend lines to the upper edges of the side connecting panel 118 are adapted to overlie the upwardly opening pockets of the device and underlie the latching flange 126. An upstanding identification or like tab 130 is adapted to be provided as an upward extension on one of the pocket forming panels, herein the panel 111 and derived by lancing it from the panel 112. As an additional feature, a printed material (game, illustration, etc.) receiving panel 131 is adapted to be provided as a foldably connected extension for one side of one of the pocket forming panels, herein the panel 111. When folded in between the panels 110 and 111, as shown in dash outline, the panel 131 separates the pocket between the panels 110 and 111 into two sections. This device may be unfolded for game playing, or the like.
On reference to FIGURE 15, a one-piece, sheet material blank, folded display and utility receptacle 132 is shown, which in general respects is similar to the device 20 of FIGURE 1, having a front panel 133, foldably attached pocket forming panels adjoined thereto along its upper edge on a fold juncture 134 and provided with a rear panel 135 having an upwardly extending hang-up panel 137 foldably attached thereto. Pocket side closure and connecting panels 138 attached to the front panel are bendably attached to retaining flange means similarly as in the previously described forms of the invention. In this instance, the hang-up panel 137 is desirably constructed to provide a top closure for the device, being provided with a tongue-like central flange 138 which is bendably connected thereto and is receptive in an upwardly opening latching slot 139 in the fold 134. For hanging up the device a hanger receiving hole 140 may be provided in the tongue flange 138. In addition, the tongue flange 138 may be struck out from an upper extension portion 141 of the back flange 137 whereby to provide a carrying handle, wherein bending of the tongue from a strikeout aperture 142 in the extension provides a handhole. The handle 141 may be used either with the panel flange extension 137 in the open condition, or with the retaining tongue 138 inserted into the slot 139 and the panel flange 137 in closing position. For packing purposes, the handle 141 may be folded onto the face of the front panel 133. On the other hand, the handle 141 may be inserted down into the pocket behind the front panel 133 and the tongue 138 inserted into the retaining slot 139. Either of the package positions of the handle 141 may be considered represented by the dash outline position indicated.
In FIGURE 16 another modification is depicted comprising a folded hang-up display and utility receptacle 143 comprising a rectangular front panel 144 having foldably connected to its lower edge a generally fan-folded pocketforming panel structure including an upwardly extending panel 144a having foldably attached to its upper edge a downwardly extending panel 145, which in turn has foldably attached to its lower edge an upwardly extending back panel 147. Closing the sides of the pockets are rearwardly bent narrow vertical side panels 148 connected to the respective opposite side edges of the front panel 144 and having along their rear edges retaining panel flanges 149 which are suitably secured, as by means of tongues thereon and slots in the back panel 147, or permanently by means of adhesive to the back of the back panel 147. For hang-up purposes, the back panel 147 is provided with an aperture 150 in its upper margin to receive a hanger projection such as a hook. For packaging, a complementary sleeve 151 may be provided into which the receptacle is adapted to he slipped to be enclosed therein. Desirably,
the sleeve 151 has a hanger-receiving hole 152 in its back panel which matches and is aligned with the hang-up hole 150 in the assembly. Thereby the sleeve encased receptacle is adapted to be mounted on a display rack with the contents of the receptacle protected.
Referring now to FIGURE 17, a folded hang-up display and utility receptacle 153 comprises a front panel 154 of preferably rectangular form to the lower horizontal edge of which is bendably attached a coextensive rearwardly extending pocket bottom panel 155 which is short in a front to rear direction and has bendably attached to its rear edge an upwardly extending rear panel 157 substantially coextensive in area with the front panel 154. Retaining panel means for this receptacle comprise a vertical rearwardly extending pocket side closure narrow panel 159 bendably attached along one edge of the front panel 154 and having attached to its rear edge a back panel 160 which engages the back of the rear panel 157 and is substantially coextensive in area therewith. To the opposite side edge of the back panel 160 is bendably connected a side pocket closure panel 161 coextensive in area With the opposite side panel 159 and extending forwardly in closing relation to that side of the upwardly opening pocket. On the forward edge of the side panel 161 is bendably attached a retaining flange panel 162 which extends lappingly against the adjacent side portion of the front panel 154 and has on its free edge a latching extension tongue 163 arranged to fit into a complementary vertical slot 164 in the front panel 154. For hang-up purposes, the back panel 160 has a hangerreceiving hole 165 which is in aligned registration with the hang-up hole 158 of the rear panel 157. An additional hang-up panel 167 in the form of an upward foldably attached extension of the back panel 160 may be provided which is adapted to be folded down into the pocket between the front and rear panels 154 and 157, or into the position between the rear panel 157 and the back panel 160, as desired. For hang-up purposes, the upper margin of the panel extension 167 is provided with a hanger hole 168. To enable hanging up of the receptacle when the panel 167 is folded down, it is also desirably provided with a hang-up hole 169 in its lower margin which, when the panel 167 is folded down registers in alignment with the hang-up holes 158 and 165. Through this arrangement, an advantageous, economical blank layout is enabled as visualized in FIGURE 18.
It will thus be apparent that the present invention affords a wide range of versatility in dis lay and utility receptacles folded up from one-piece blanks. Any number of upwardly opening pockets from one to as many as desired may be provided by fan-folded extension of the pocket-forming panel structure. Numerous preferences can be accommodated in respect to the hang-up structure of the receptacles,
Although various species, arrangements and auxiliary features have been separately illustrated, it will be understood that these may be combined or interchanged as preferred in respect to the basic construction.
It will be understood that modifications and variations may be effected without departing from the scope of the novel concepts of the present invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folded display and utility receptacle set up from a one-piece sheet material blank and including:
a front panel having, in an upright position of the receptacle, upper and lower horizontal edges and opposite side edges;
pocket panel structure extending from a bend joint along one of said horizontal edges and defining at the rear of said front panel at least one upwardly opening article-receiving pocket and including a rear panel;
and retaining panel means integral on a bend joint along at least one of said side edges of the front panel and providing narrow side panels extending rearwardly from said front panel in closing relation to the sides of said pocket and joined bendably at their rear edges to at least one retaining panel, spaced from and opposingly related to said front panel and extending along the back of said rear panel and defining a tubular retaining structure about the pocket panel structure.
2. A receptacle as defined in claim 1, in which said side panels have respective retaining panels joined thereto, and means securing said retaining panels to one another in engaged relation to said pocket panel structure.
3. A receptacle as defined in claim 1, in which said pocket panel structure includes at least one generally upright panel having means thereon for retaining an article in place within the pocket.
4. A receptacle as defined in claim 1, in which one of said pocket panel structure and said retaining panel means has an upwardly extending integral carrying handle panel portion having a hand hole therein.
5. A receptacle as defined in claim 1, in which both of said side panels are part of an integrally connected series of panels including a back panel which engages at the rear of said pocket panel structure and the terminal portion of said series comprises a panel flange engaging with the front of said front panel at the opposite side from said one side edge, and means securing said panel flange to said front panel.
6. A receptacle according to claim 1, having multiple hanger means on said rear panel comprising an upstanding panel portion having an upper hanger hole therein, a lower hinge joint joining the upstanding panel, and a hang-up tab separated from said panel portion by a slit and joined to said rear panel in alignment with said fold joint so that said panel portion may be folded toward said rear panel with said tab projecting upwardly from the rear panel.
7. A receptacle according to claim 1, having a top closure panel structure hingedly connected to said front panel and operable to close the top of said pocket.
8. A folded display and utility receptacle set up from a one-piece sheet material blank and including:
a front panel having, in an upright position of the receptacle, upper and lower horizontal edges and opposite side edges;
pocket panel structure extending from a bend joint along one of said horizontal edges and comprising a fan-folded arrangement of foldably attached panels defining a plurality of upwardly opening article-receiving pockets;
and retaining panel means integral on a bend joint along at least one of said side edges and providing narrow side panels extending rearwardly from said front panel in closing relation to the sides of said pocket and joined bendably at their rear edges to at least one retaining panel, spaced from and opposingly related to said front panel.
9. A receptacle as defined in claim 8, in which one of said fan-folded panels has a side edge having foldably connected thereto a divider partition panel folded into opposing relation to said one fan-folded panel.
10. A receptacle as defined in claim 8, including a protective sleeve in which the receptacle is slidably received.
