No. 536,462 Claims priority, appiieation Germany, Mar. 30, 1965, M 64,698 4 Claims. (Cl. 214 -38) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A trash collecting truck has a trash tank removably carried on the truck chassis. A tail gate pivotally secured to the front end of the truck when in lowered position can push trashthrough a door opening'in the rear end of the tank. When the tail is l'fted clear of the tank by a winch carried by the truck, then the tank can be dragged off the truck onto another carrier such as a railroad fiat car.
This invention relates to a trash truck for collecting trash and, in particular, to a trash truck having a removable trash receiving body or tank.
In the copending application of Roedel et a1., S.N. 497,312, filed Oct. 18, 1965, for Trash Truck, a truck is disclosed in which the truck body or trash holding tank has an open rear end and a movable tail gate is secured to the truck chassis for loading trash into the tank and compact'ng the trash and as a closure for the openng in the tank. This tail gate can be swung out to open the tank by being pivotally secured to the chassis so that it is movable backwardly and downwardly, whereby trash can be removed from the tank, or the tank can be vertically lifted and removed from the chassis.
The principal feature of such construction is in that, after the tail gate has been swung backwardly and downwardly, a conventional crane wit-h a suitable lifting beam can be used to remove a trash-filled tank from the truck and replace it with an empty tank.
The object of this invention is to produce a d fferent means for handling a removable trash tank. In this invention, a movable tail gate is pivotally joined to the truck chassis adjacent the front end thereof in such a manner that it can be lowered or lifted so the tank can be removed from the chassis. In this invention, the tank is mounted on wheels so that it can be rolled off the chassis by pulling it backwards by means of a rope winch installed adjacent the front end of the chassis. A tow rope having a hook and running around a sheave is used to pull the tank across a steel plate forming a bridge between the trash truck and onto a different tank carrier, such as a railroad fiatcar.
A flat train can be formed of a plurality of these fiat- CZllS. Preferably, the length of the trash tank is not greater than the width of the different tank carrier, such as a flatcar. A further feature of the invention is in that a hoistening rope can be attached to the rope winch for lifting and lowering the tail gate for the tank.
The means by which the objects of the invention are obtained are described more fully with reference to the accompanying schematic drawing showing the front view of the trash truck.
Truck 1 has a chassis 1'. The tail gate 2 is pivotally secured by pivot pins 3 to the chassis 1. Tail gate 2 is adapted to be lifted from a lower position as shown in dashed lines to the position shown in full lines. This tail 3,380,660 Patented Apr. I 30, 1 968 gate is provided with a hydraulically operated trash thrust member 12 and a trash com-pressing plate 13 opthe vertical plane of pins 3 guides hoistening rope and extends between tail gate 2 and winch 6 which is carried by chassis 1. Thus hoistening rope 5 can either lift or lower tail gate 2. Trash tank 7 is mounted on wheels 8 so that it can be easily and quickly moved. Trash tank 7 has a rear door opening 7a which is closable by a top cover 16, a center cover 17 which partially closes the opening, and a lower cover 18 which can be moved to close the door opening completely. Top cover 16 is movably attached to tank 7, center cover 17 is movably connected to cover 16, and lower cover 18 is hinged to cover 17. A tow rope 6 which is attached to winch 6 is adapted to be extended across a different tank carrier such as flatcar 9 and around a sheave 10 and ending in a hook 6-". When tail gate 2 has been lifted, hook 6 is attached to tank 7 and the winch operated so that tank 7 can be pulled off of the chassis 1' across a temporary metal bridge plate 11 and onto flatcar 9. As shown in the drawing, the length of tank 7 is approximately the same as the width of flatcar 9 with due regard for transportation safety.
The trash truck 7, as provided in this invention, wIth the tail gate 2 and the tank 7 easily movable on rollers or wheels 8 so that it can be placed on a different carrier means that communities composed of small cities or farm areas can be serviced by one trash truck because of the quickness with which a filled trash tank can be removed and placed on a different carrier for further transport to a large tr-ash collecting area.
Having now described the means by which the objects of the invention are obtained, we claim:
1. A trash collecting truck comprising a chassis, a drivers cab on said chassis, a trash tank remova-bly carried on the chassis, a door opening in the rear end of said tank, a tail gate pivotally secured to the front end of said chassis, drive means secured to said chassis and said tail gate for pivotally moving said gate, and trash thrust means carried by said tail gate for moving trash deposited on said tail gate into said tank, and lifting means for swinging said tail gate upwardly and clear of said tank so that said tank is liftable rearwardly from said chassis.
2. A truck as in claim 1, further comprising wheel means movably supporting said tank, and winch means including a tow rope and a hook mounted on said chassis for pulling said tank off said chassis across a bridge plate and onto a different tank carrier.
3. A truck as in claim 2, said tank having a length approximately not greater than the width of said different tank carrier.
4. A truck as in claim 2, said means for swinging said tail gate upwardly further comprising a sheave mounted on said chassis, and a hoistening rope running over said sheave and connecting said winch means and said tail gate.
