19 Claims. oi. 131-105 The invention relates to cigar manufacture and particularly is directed to improvements in a device which conveys the wrapper from its matrix at the punching station into the range of the rolling mold of a cigar making machine. In order to convey in cigar rolling machines the wrapper from the punching station into the rolling mold of a cigar making machine for the purpose of wrapping or rolling the wrapper around the cigar filler in the mold, there have been used heretofore devices which are provided with a swivel arm the free end of which carries a rotatable suction head which removes the wrapper from the punching device and then moves it in such a manner to a position above the cigar rolling mold that the wrapper comes to lie in an inclined position with respect to the axis of the filler in the mold. After the wrapper has been applied with one of its ends to the cigar filler, the swivel arm is continuously swivelled about its axis in such a manner that the wrapper is helically wrapped around the filler.
In order to perform this helical wrapping of the wrapper without difiiculties, it is necessary that the wrapper be subjected to a lateral pull in the direction of the axis of rotation of the filler and this is done by causing the suction head to perform during its swivel movement predetermined additional movements which are substantially parallel to the rolling axis. This lateral movement of the suction head, which may be initiated by a stationary cam, requires that the length of the swivel arm be shortened or extended, respectively. In the conventional devices of this type this change in the effective length of the swivel arm is produced by constructing the swivel arm in the form of a collapsible lever system.
Since the angle at which the wrapper is applied to the filler has to be maintained in accordance with the swivel movement of the swivel arm and in accordance with the profile of the filler, it is necessary, as already mentioned in the foregoing, that the suction head be attached rotatably to the swivel arm and the rotative movement is effected in accordance with the shape of the filler by means of a suitable adjustable lever system which, for instance, may be also controlled or adjusted by a cam or a cam slot which usually is arranged on a cam plate which has to be exchanged by another cam plate when the profile of the cigar is to be changed.
The unavoidable looseness in the joints of the swivel arm which is aggravated by its construction in the form of a collapsible lever system renders the design of the adjustable linkage for controlling the movement of the suction head rather difficult, particularly in such niachines which are provided with a two part conveyor system, for instance with a swivel arm for the wrapper for moving the latter from the punching station to the rolling mold :and another adjustable linkage for adjusting the wrapper holding means, for instance the suction head.
It is an object of the invention to overcome these disadvantages by providing means which permits a longitudinal adjustment of the conveyor means.
If the conveyor means consists of a swivel arm, the same preferably is provided with telescopically connected parts. The conveyor means may, however, also be constructed as a carriage upon which the holding means is slidably arranged.
A substantial advantage of the invention consists in this that owing to the longitudinal adjustability of the conveying means the initiation of the rolling or wrapping operation from the end of the cigar filler to be lit to the mouthpiece end of the cigar may take place independently of the movement of the conveying means. This has not been accomplished by the conventional machines because a particular control of the wrapper holder such as the suction head was rather difficult to achieve in connection with a collapsible lever system in view of the necessary swivel action.
Another object and advantage of the device of the invention consists in this that it may be applied to such cigar making machines which are designed to perform a so-called point rolling of the wrapper so that the device of the invention may'not only be used for the production of single and double profile fillers but also for the production of profile cigars.
The invention has as another one of its objects the provision of a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from its place of production to the place where it is rolled about a cigar filler which device comprises a plurality of operatively connected and relatively to each other adjustable parts which produce a lateral movement and of which one adjustable part carries a rotatable element for holding the wrapper while a few of said parts of said conveying device are relatively longitudinally adjustable with respect to one another. One of said plurality of operatively connected parts includes a swivel arm on the free end of which is rotatably mounted a suction head for holding said wrapper, said swivel arm including telescopically connected parts.
Still another object of the invention is that a suction head for holding the wrapper is rotatably mounted on the free end of the swivel arm, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes of which the inner one is fixedly connected to a vertical rotatably mounted column, the outer one of said tubes carrying a holder provided with means for rotatably supporting said suction head, means for preventing a rotative movement of said outer tube relatively to said inner tube, a stationary cam means, and a guide member on said outer tube engaging said cam means which latter controls the axial movement of said outer tube during the swivel movement of said swivel arm.
It is also an object of the invention to provide the device with a cam means fixedly attached on said rotatable suction head, and a guide element attached to a carrier slidably mounted on said outer tube and engaging said last mentioned cam means for controlling the rotative adjustment of said suction head.
Still another object of the invention is to provide the device with means for rotatably adjusting said suction head, said means including telescopically connected driven parts which are non-rotatably connected with one another and extend parallel to the telescopically connected swivel arm parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide drive means for driving said telescopically connected driven parts, a vertical column carrying said swivel arm, said drive means being arranged within said vertical column, and including a drive shaft extending through said vertical column and having attached to both its ends bevel gears of which one is driven by a gear segment.
Another object of the invention is a device which includes within said plurality of operatively connected parts a swivel arm on the free end of which is rotatably mounted a suction head for holding said wnapper, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes of which the inner one is fixedly connected to a vertical rotatably mounted column, the outer one of said tubes carrying a holder provided with means for rotatably supporting said suction head, means for preventing a rot-ative movement of said outer tube relatively to said inner tube, a stationary cam means, a guide member on said outer tube engaging said cam means which latter control-s the axial movement of said outer tube during the swivel movement of said swivel arm, a cam means fixedly attached on said rotatable suction head, and a guide element attached to a carrier slid-ably mounted on said outer tube and engaging said last mentioned cam means for controlling the rotative adjustment of said suction head, said guide member being mounted on said carrier which is slidably mounted on said outer tube.
Still another object of the invention is a device which includes within said plurality of ope-ratively connected parts a swivel arm on the free end of which a suction head is rotatably mounted, a slidable carrier on which said swivel arm is mounted, means for reciprocating said carrier, and a stationary cam means operatively connected with said carrier for controlling the movement of the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings which show by way of example three different embodiments of the device of the invention.

Referring to the FIGS. 1 and 2, the device of the invention is pnovided with an upstanding bearing block 2 which is fixedly attached to a horizontal portion of the machine frame 1. The bearing block 2 supports rotatably about a vertical axis a supporting means in the form of a swivel arm 3. This swivel arm 3 includes a support here shown as a tubular column 4, at the upper end of which is arranged a laterally extending supporting member in the form of a horizontal tube 5. This tube 5 receives telescopically another supporting member here shown as a tube 6 on the free end of which is attached a holder 7 in which a transfer member in the form of a suction head 8 is rotatably supported about a vertical axis. The suction line which causes the air to pass upwardly through the suction surface 9 of the suction head 8 consists of a tubular element 10 mounted in the holder 7, a tubular shaft 11, the tube 6, the tube 5 and the tubular column 4.
Below the bearing block 2 and on the machine frame 1 is attached another holder 12 which has a U-shaped extension 13 into which the lower end 14 of the tubular column 4 extends. The not disclosed suction line is connected to thehollow space formed Within the U-shaped extension 13. The direction of the passage of the suction air is indicated by the arrows 15. The suction head 8 is also connected with a compressed air line 16 which extends through the axis of rotation of the suction head. For the purpose of rotatably adjusting the suction head 8, a bevel gear 17 is attached to the upper end of the tubular shaft 11. This bevel gear 17 meshes with a bevel gear 18 on a horizontally positioned shaft 19 which is rotatably supported in a bearing block 20 attached to the holder 7. The free end of the shaft 19 has attached thereto a guide sleeve 21 into which extends slidably a shaft 22 which by means of a key 23 is non-rotatably but axially mova-bly connected with the sleeve 21. The shaft 22 is rotatably supported in bearings 24 and 25. Adjacent to the bearing 25 the shaft 22 has attached thereto a bevel gear 26 which is driven by a bevel gear 27. The two bearings 24 and 25 are mounted on a horizontal flange 28 which is attached by means of a suitable hub on the upper end of the column 4. The bevel gear 27 is attached to the upper end of a vertical shaft 29 the lower free end of which has mounted thereon a bevel gear 30 which meshes with an angularly adjustable toothed segment 31 and is adapted to be driven by the latter. The shaft 29 is rotatably supported in the upper end of the column 4 while the lower end of the shaft is rotatably supported in the lower leg 32 of the U-shaped extension 13. On the lower end 14 of the column 4 is attached a bevel gear 33 which meshes with a toothed segment 34. v
For a longitudinal adjustment of the horizontal arm of the swivel arm 3 the holder 7 of the suction head 8 has attached thereto a tube 35 which is axially slidable by bearing sleeves 36 arranged on the outside wall of the tube 5. In order to prevent any relative rotative movement, the horizontal flange 28 is provided with a downwardly extending guide projection 37 which enters into an axial slot 38 on a plate 39 attached to the tube 35. The lower side of the tube 35 has attached thereto a roller 40 which extends into a cam slot 41a provided in a cam plate 41 which is attached to a flange-like projection 42 of the bearing block 2.
The operation of the device as shown in FIGS. 1 and I 2 is as follows:
FIG. 2 illustrates the path along which the suction head 8 moves from a first end position in which it is located above a source of wrappers here shown as the matrix 44 of a punching device to a second end position in which it delivers a wrapper to a cigar filler W in the rolling mold, not shown. The suction head 8 moves along in the same path back to the matrix 44 after the delivery of a wrapper. This path is indicated by a dashand-dotted line 43. For the purpose of making the illustration clearer, FIG. 2 illustrates only the position of the wrapper D between the matrix 44 and the filler W. The suction head 8 picks up the wrapper D after the latter has been punched by the matrix 44 and conveys it to the cigar rolling mold. The wrapper D is then pressed in conventional manner against the filler and thereupon the rolling operation commences. During double rolling the suction head has to be moved during the swivel movement substantially straight and transversely to the filler W. Furthermore, the angle of application has to be maintained. Since the normal circular path of the swivel arm would be outwardly curved, it is required that the slot in the cam plate 41 be curved inwardly as shown at 41b in order to properly guide the roller 40 and the tube 35. Therefore, the suction head 8 will be moved in the desired rectilinear path.
The angular position of the suction head 8 is maintained in that the bevel gear 26 rolls along the bevel gear 27 so that the suction head 8 will receive the required rotative adjustment by means of the bevel gears 17 and 18. Any corrections which might be necessary are carried out with the help of the toothed segment 31 which is controlled by a cam and transmits its movement by means of the bevel gears 30 and 27. In addition to corrections required in view of the profile of the cigar there are also corrections required for rotating the suction head 8 to bring it in requisite position with respect to the matrix 44. A second wrapper D is moved in identical but inverted relation. This second wrapper D is illustrated in FIG. 2 in dash-and-dotted lines.
The device illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4 is employed for producing profile cigars and the parts thereof which are the same as in the device illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 are identified by the same reference characters. This modified device differs from the first described device in that even when the swivel arm is stationary, it is possible to obtain a lateral pull on the wrapper when the suction head 45 performs a rotative movement.
The device illustrated in the FIGS. 3 and 4 produces cigars by the so-called point-rolling method and therefore the suction head 45 is not arranged centrically but eccentrically on its tubular shaft 11. The suction head 45 is provided at its upper end with a horizontally extending flange 46-on which is mounted a cam plate 47 provided with a closed cam groove 47a. A follower in the form of a control roller 48 mounted on a horizontally extending holder on carrier 49 extends into this cam groove 47a. The holder 49 is longitudinally movable in a guide way 50 extending parallel to the axis of the horizontally extending tube 5 of the swivel arm 3. At the right hand end of the holder 49 is attached a second follower roller 51 which corresponds to the roller 40 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Therefore, the roller 51 is only indirectly connected with the tube 35, namely by means of the holder 49, the control roller 48 and the holder 7. The roller 51 extends into a cam groove 52a provided in a cam plate 52 attached to the extension 42 of the bearing block 2. The cam groove 52a corresponds to the shape of the profile of the cigarto be produced. In FIG. 4, the suction head 45 is shown in that position in which the rolling or wrapping operation starts. The rolling mold is represented by the filler W The operation of this modified device will now be described with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6.
The wrapper D after having been received by the suction head from the matrix 53 of the punching device is moved by the swivel arm while adhering to the suction head along a path indicated by the dash-and-dotted line 54. The wrapper passes through the positions E, F, G, H and J (FIG. 5). From position H to I the path of movement of the wrapper D is solely performed during the rotation of the suction head 45 about a fixed point as is also the return movement from J to H as shown in FIG. 6.
Between the positions G and H an additional lateral pulling movement is exerted upon the wrapper which movement is initiated by the cam slot 47a in the cam plate 47 (see FIG. 4). This lateral pulling movement is, of course, only required for the rolling operation which hereafter will be explained in connection with FIG. 6. The
position I of the wrapper D indicates the end of the forward movement and the start of the rearward movement J, H, G, F, and E. On the way from the position I to the position H the end of the wrapper performs a pure point-rolling around the end of the filler. On the way from the position H to the position G the mentioned lateral pull is accomplished. This pull takes effect up to and beyond the position at a right angle to the rolling axis and is effected solely by a rotative movement of the suction head owing to the influence of the cam slot 47a and then also owing to the rotative movement of the suction head.
In the position G the end of the filler is completely Wrapped and the further rolling operation takes place in the positions G to F by a movement of the swivel arm and rotation of the suction head 45.
FIGS. 7 and 8 disclose a third embodiment of the device of the invention in which a reciprocating carriage 55 is employed on which an arm 56 is mounted corresponding to the swivel arm 3 and which is longitudinally adjustably mounted. The parts attached to the arm 56 correspond to the parts employed in the embodiment illustrated in the form of the invention shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. The rectilinear movement of the carriage 55 requires that the cam groove 57 for the lateral pull have an elongated form. In addition, it is necessary that the bevel gear 27a be mounted on a tubular shaft 58 provided with an interior axial groove 59 into which a key 61 attached to a second shaft 60 engages for preventing a relative rotation between the shafts 58 and 60. At the lower free end of the shaft 60 is attached a bevel gear 30a which is rotatably adjusted by means of a toothed segment 34a. For performing its reciprocating movement the carriage 55 is slidably arranged on two space-d parallel guide rods 62 and 63 and a screw spindle 64 is in threaded engagement with a thread 65 in the carriage 55 so that upon rotation of the screw spindle 64 the carriage 55 is moved back and forth. The free end of the screw spindle 64 has attached thereto a gear 66 which is driven by a control gear 67. This last described device operates as follows:
The forward movement of the carriage 55 with the arm 56 thereon for conveying the wrapper D from the punching device to the rolling mold is effected by driving the control gear 67 so that the carriage by means of the gear 66 and the screw spindle 64 is moved toward the rolling mold. At the same time the suction head 45 is swivelled .by means of the toothed segment 34a which rotates the bevel gear 30a, the shaft 60, the key 61, the tubular shaft 58, the bevel gear 27a and the other parts shown in FIG. 3. The rolling operation and the return movement takes place in similar manner as described in connection with FIGS. 3 and 6.
What we claim is:
1. In a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from a predetermined position at the point of production to another remote predetermined position where it is rolled about a cigar filler, comprising an extensible swivel arm rotatable about a vertical axis, a wrapper gripping head mounted on said swivel arm so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis, means for rotating said swivel arm, means for rotating said wrapper gripping head, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes and a vertical rotatably mounted column which is fixedly connected to one of said tubes, the other of said tubes carrying rotatably said wrapper gripping head, means for preventing a rotative movement of said two tubes relatively to each other, stationary cam means, a carrier slidably mounted on said other tube and having a portion engaging said cam means which latter controls the axial extension of said swivel arm during its rotation from one of said positions to the other one of said positions, second cam means fixedly attached to said wrapper gripping head and a guide element'attached to said carrier and cooperating with said second cam means for controlling the adjustment of said other tube with respect to said one tube in response to rotation of said head when said head has been moved by said swivel arm into the position where the wrapper is to be rolled about said cigar filler.
2. In a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from a predetermined position at the point of production to another remote predetermined position where it s rolled about a cigar filler, comprising an extensible swivel arm rotatable about a vertical axis, a Wrapper gripping head mounted on said swivel arm so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis, means for rotating said swivel arm, means for rotatlng said wrapper gripping head, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes and a vertical rotatably mounted column fixedly connected to one of said tubes, the other of said tubes carrying rotatably said wrapper gripping head, means for preventing a rotative movement of said two tubes relatively to each other, stationary cam means, a carrier slidably mounted on said other tube and having a portion engaging said cam means which latter controls the axial extension of said swivel arm during its rotation from one of said positions to the other one of said positions, second cam means fixedly attached to said wrapper gripping head and a guide element attached to said carrier and cooperating with said second cam means for controlling the adjustment of said other tube with respect to said one tube in response to rotation of said head when said head has been moved by said swivel arm into the position Where the wrapper is to be rolled about said cigar filler, said wrapper gripping head being eccentrically mounted on a shaft which is rotatably mounted on the free end of said other tube and being operatively connected with said wrapper gripping head drive means, whereby a lateral pull is exerted upon said wrapper when said wrapper gripping head is rotated.
3. In a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from a predetermined position at the point of production to another remote predetermined position where it is rolled about a cigar filler, comprising an extensible swivel arm rotatable about a vertical axis, a wrapper gripping head mounted on said swivel arm so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis, means for rotating said swivel arm, means for rotating said wrapper gripping head, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes and a vertical rotatably mounted column fixedly connected toone of said tubes, the other of said tubes carrying rotatably said wrapper gripping head, means for preventing a rotative movement of said two tubes relatively to each other, stationary cam means, a carrier slidably mounted on said one tube and having a portion engaging said cam means which latter controls the axial extension of said swivel arm during its rotation from one of said positions to the other one of said positions, second cam means fixedly attached to said wrapper gripping head and a guide element attached to said carrier and cooperating with said second cam means for controlling the adjustment of said other tube with respect to said one tube in response to rotation of said head when said head has been moved by said swivel arm into the position where the wrapper is to be rolled about said cigar filler, said means for rotating said wrapper gripping head including an extensible driven shaft arranged parallel to said two telescopically connected tubes, means operatively connecting said driven shaft with said wrapper gripping head, and a drive shaft arranged in said column and drivingly connected with said driven shaft.
4. In a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from a predetermined position at the point of production to another remote predetermined position where it is rolled about a cigar filler, comprising an extensible swivel arm rotatable about a vertical axis, a wrapper gripping head mounted on said swivel arm so as to be rotatable about a vertical axis, means for rotating said swivel arm, said swivel arm including two telescopically connected horizontally disposed tubes and a vertical rtatably mounted column fixedly connected to one of said tubes, the other of said tubes carrying rotatably said wrapper gripping head, means for preventing a rotative movement of said two tubes relatively to each other, stationary cam means, a carrier slidably mounted on said other tube and having a portion engaging said cam means which latter controls the axial extension of said swivel arm during its rotation from one of said positions to the other one of said positions, second cam means fixedly attached to said wrapper gripping head and a guide element attached to said carrier and cooperating with said second cam means for controlling the adjustment of said other tube with respect to said one tube in response to rotation of said head when said head has been moved by said swivel arm into the position where the wrapper is to be rolled about said cigar filler, said wrapper gripping head being eccentrically mounted on the lower end of a shaft which is rotatably mounted on the free end of said other tube and the upper end of said shaft being operatively connected with a driven shaft arranged parallel to said telescopically connected tubes, and a drive shaft arranged in said column and drivingly connected with said driven shaft, said eccentrically mounted wrapper gripping head exerting a lateral pull upon said wrapper when said wrapper gripping head is rotated.
5. A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; supporting means including a first elongated supporting member and a second elongated supporting member, each of said supporting members having an end and one supporting member being movable longitudinally of the other supporting member, a holder provided at the end of said one supporting member and arranged to rotatably support said transfer member, and a support connected with the end of the other supporting member and arranged to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder; means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to movement of said support; and means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder.
6. A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; a swivel arm including an inner tube and an outer tube telescopically receiving said inner tube, one of said tubes being movable axially of the other tube and each of said tubes having an end, a holder provided at the end of said one tube and arranged to rotatably support the transfer member, means for holding said one tube against rotation with respect to said other tube, and a column connected with the end of said other tube and arranged to rotate about an axis which is substantially perpendicular to the axes of said tubes to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder; stationary cam means; a follower provided on said one tube and engaging with said cam means to move said one tube axially of said other tube in response to rotation of said column; and means for moving said one tube axially of said other tube in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder so that said one tube is movable axially of said other tube in response to rotation of the transfer member with said column and in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder.
7. A device for transferring successive Wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member arranged to rotate about a vertical axis and movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the Wrapper to a cigar filler; a swivel arm comprising two horizontal tubes including an inner tube and an outer tube, each of said tubes having an end and said outer tube receiving a portion of and being slidable axially of said inner tube, a holder connected with the end of said outer tube and rotatably supporting said transfer member, means for holding said outer tube against rotation with respect to said inner tube, and a column secured to the end of said inner tube and arranged to rotate about a vertical axis so as to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder; a stationary cam adjacent to said outer tube; a second cam fixed to said transfer member; a carrier supported by and slidable axially of said outer tube; a first follower secured to said carrier and arranged to track said stationary cam; and a' second follower secured to said carrier and arranged to track said second cam whereby said first follower compels the outer tube to move axially of said inner tube in response to rotation of said column and said second follower compels the outer tube to move axially of said inner tube in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder.

A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; supporting means including a first elongated supporting member and a second elongated supporting member, each of said supporting members having an end and one supporting member being movable, longitudinally of the other supporting member, a holder provided at the end of said one supporting member and arranged to rotatably support said transfer member, and a hollow support connected with the end of the other supporting member and arranged to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder comprising telescopically connected and driven parts non-rotatably connected to each other and extending in parallelism with the direction of movement of said one supporting member, one of said driven parts being drivingly connected w th said transfer member, and drive means arranged in said hollow support and drivingly connected with another of said driven parts; means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to movement of said support; and means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder.

A device as set forth in claim 8, wherein said drive means comprises a drive shaft extending through said hollow support, a bevel gear provided at each end of said drive shaft, a bevel gear mounted on said other driven part and meshing with one bevel gear of said drive shaft, and a gear segment meshing with the other bevel gear of said drive shaft.

A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; a swivel arm including an inner tube and an outer tube telescopically receiving said inner tube, one of said tubes being movable axially of the other tube and each of said tubes having an end, a holder provided at the end of said one tube and arranged to rotatably support the transfer member, means for holding said one tube against rotation with respect to said other tube, and a column connected with the end of said other tube and arranged to rotate about an axis which is substantially perpendicular to the axes of said tubes to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder; stationary cam means; a follower provided on said one tube and engaging with said cam means to move said one tube axially of said other tube in response to rotation of said column; a second cam means fixedly secured to said transfer member; a carrier slidably mounted on said one tube and connected with said follower; and a second follower secured to said carrier and engaging said second cam means to move said one tube axially of said other tube in response to rotation of the transfer member in said holder.

A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; supporting means including a first elongated supporting member and a second elongated supporting member, each of said supporting members having an end and one supporting member being movable longitudinally of the other supporting member, a holder provided at the free end of said one supporting member and arranged to rotatably support said transfer member, and a reciprocable carriage connected with the free end of the other supporting member and arranged to move the transfer member between said end positions; means for reciprocating said carriage; means for rotating the transfer member with respect to said holder; means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to reciprocatory movement of said carriage; and means for moving said one supporting member longitudinally of the other supporting member in response to rotation of the transfer member with respect to said holder.

In a device for conveying the wrapper in cigar manufacture from a predetermined position at the point of production to another remote predetermined position where it is rolled about a cigar filler, in combination, extensible support means, a wrapper gripping head rotatablymounted on said support means for gripping a wrapper while being transferred from said point of production to the remote location where the wrapper is rolled about said filler, means for moving said extensible support means between said first named positions, rotary means including a gearing for orienting said head to different angular positions during its movement between said first named positions and means for adjusting said gearing, whereby said wrapper gripping head can be properly adjusted at the point of wrapper production to be in requisite position to receive a wrapper, in which said adjusting means comprises an adjustable gear member which meshes with said gearing and in which said rotary means comprises an extensible rotary drive shaft which is parallel with said extensible support means.

A device for transferring successive wrappers from a source of wrappers to consecutive cigar fillers in a cigar machine, comprising a rotary transfer member movable between a first end position in which it receives a wrapper from said source and a second end position in which it applies the wrapper to a cigar filler; supporting means including a first supporting member and a second supporting member, one of said supporting members being movable relative to the other supporting member, a holder provided on said one supporting member and arranged to rotatably support said transfer member, and a support connected with said other supporting member and arranged to move said transfer member between said end positions; means for rotating said transfer member with respect to said holder; means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to movement of said support; and means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to rotation of said transfer member with respect to said holder.
14. A device as defined in claim 13, further comprising means for moving said support independently of said rotating means.
15. A device as defined in claim 13, wherein the means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to rotation of said transfer member comprises a cam element and a follower element cooperating with said cam element, one of said elements being provided on said one supporting member and the other element being provided on said transfer member.
16. A device as defined in claim 13, wherein the means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to movement of said support comprises a cam element and a follower element cooperating with said cam element, one of said elements being stationary and the other element being provided on said one supporting member.
17. A device as defined in claim 13, wherein the means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to rotation of said transfer member comprises a first cam provided on said transfer member and a first follower cooperating with said first cam, said means for moving said one supporting member relative to said other supporting member in response to movement of said support comprising a stationary second cam and a second follower cooperating with said second cam, said first and second followers being connected with said one supporting member at a fixed distance from each other.
18. A device as defined in claim 17, wherein said support is turnable about a fixed axis which is parallel to the axis of rotation of said transfer member.
19. A device as defined in claim 17, wherein said support comprises a carriage which is reciprocable in directions substantially at right angles to the axis of rotation of said transfer member.

Claims (1)
12. IN A DEVICE FOR CONVEYING THE WRAPPER IN CIGAR MANUFACTURE FROM A PREDETERMINED POSITION AT THE POINT OF PRODUCTION TO ANOTHER REMOTE PREDETERMINED POSITION WHERE IT IS ROLLED ABOUT A CIGAR FILLER, IN COMBINATION EXTENSIBLE SUPPORT MEANS, A WRAPPER GRIPPING HEAD ROTATABLY MOUNTED ON SAID SUPPORT MEANS FOR GRIPPING A WRAPPER WHILE BEING TRANSFERRED FROM SAID POINT OF PRODUCTION TO THE REMOTE LOCATION WHERE THE WRAPPER IS ROLLED ABOUT SAID FILLER, MEANS FOR MOVING SAID EXTENSIBLE SUPPORT MEANS BETWEEN SAID FIRST NAMED POSITIONS, ROTARY MEANS INCLUDING A GEARING FOR ORIENTING SAID HEAD TO DIFFERENT ANGULAR POSITIONS DURING ITS MOVEMENT BETWEEN SAID FIRST NAMED POSITIONS AND MEANS FOR ADJUSTING SAID GEARING, WHEREBY SAID WAPPER GRIPPING HEAD CAN BE PROPERLY ADJUSTABLE AT THE POINT OF WRAPPER PRODUCTION TO BE IN REQUISITE POSITION TO RECEIVE A WRAPPER, IN WHICH SAID ADJUSTING MEANS COM. PRISES AN ADJUSTABLE GEAR MEMBER WHICH MESHES WITH SAID GEARING AND IN WHICH SAID ROTARY MEANS COMPRISES AN EXTENSIBLE ROTARY DRIVE SHAFT WHICH IS PARALLEL WITH SAID EXTENSIBLE SUPPORT MEANS.
