This invention relates to a hand jointer tool and more particularly to a device for striking a joint between adjacent masonry elements, particularly a vertical joint.
It is to be understood that the terminology masonry elements utilized throughout the specification is to be interpreted as including bricks, cinder blocks, compressed concrete slabs or the like, and that the joint therebetween may be formed of mortar of motar or other similar material.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of a hand jointer tool which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and utilize.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a hand jointer tool having a plurality of working surfaces whereby when one surface has been worn down, another may be readily utilized without replacing the entire tool.
A further object of the instant invention is to provide a device of the type described wherein the various outer peripheral surfaces of the tool have different transverse configurations whereby a selected portion of the outer peripheral surface may be used to strike a joint having a selected shape.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a hand jointer tool which is polygonal in vertical crosssection and which has its inner portions removed to form a loop therein, the thickness of the tool permitting the same to be gripped by the hand of a user at any point on its periphery with the fingers of the users hand extended through the loop.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described having certain specific transverse configurations on various portions of its outer peripheral surface whereby the user may strike a joint having certain predetermined shapes.
Other and further objects reside in the combination of elements, arrangement of parts, and features of construction.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and as shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a plurality of masonry elements secured to each other by horizontal and vertical motar joints or the like;
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary enlarged transverse crosssectional view through one of the vertical joints, taken substantially on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of one form of hand jointer tool in accordance with the instant inventive concept;
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional View through two of the sides of the tool of FIGURE 3, taken substantially on line 4-4 of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view through the other two sides of the tool of FIGURE 3, taken sub stantially on line 55 of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 6 is a side elevational view of a modified form of hand jointer tool in accordance with the instant inventive concept;
FIGURE 7 is a cross-sectional view through two of the sides of the tool of FIGURE 6, taken substantially on line 77 of FIGURE 6; and
FIGURE 8 is a cross-sectional view through the other two sides of the tool of FIGURE 6, taken substantially on line 8-8 of FIGURE 6.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in general, and more particularly to FIGURES 1 and 2, a plurality of masonry elements such as bricks or the like are designated by the reference numeral 10 and are spaced from each other in conventional fashion by horizontal and vertical joints 12 formed of motar or the like. One such joint is shown in FIGURE 2 after it has been struck by a substantially V-shaped portion of the tool of the instant invention.
Referring now more particularly to FIGURES 3 to 5, one embodiment of the hand jointer tool of the instant invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 15 and comprises basically a substantially continuous element 16 having an inner peripheral surface 18 and an outer peripheral surface 20, the inner peripheral surface 18 defining a closed loop 22, and the thickness of the continuous element 16 between the inner peripheral surface 18 and the outer peripheral surface 20 being such as to permit the same to be gripped by the hand of a user at any point on its periphery with the fingers of the hand extended through the loop 22.
The outer peripheral surface 20 of the tool 15 carries means for striking a joint 12 between adjacent masonry elements 10, the embodiment of FIGURES 3 to 5 having dilferent transverse configurations on each side of the same whereby a selected portion of the outer peripheral surface may be used to strike a joint having a selected shape. As will be seen in FIGURE 4, one side 24 of the outer peripheral surface 20 has an arcuate or curved transverse configuration and another side 26 has a V- shaped transverse configuration. In FIGURE 5 it will be seen that one of the other sides 28 of the outer peripheral surface 20 includes an elongated runner 30 on a substantially fiat surface 32 to strike a grapevine joint such as used with antique brick or the like and the opposite side 34 of the outer peripheral surface 20 includes a pair of spaced, elongated, parallel runners 36 on an arcuate surface 38 to provide a double grapevine joint.
The embodiment shown in FIGURES 3 to 5 is formed of a strap material having the runners 30 and 36 integrally formed or secured thereto and extending a major portion of the length of their respective sides. It is to be understood that the device of the instant invention may be formed of any suitable material and in any suitable shape, a polygon such as the parallelogram shown in the drawing being the preferred form in order that the individual sides may be readily available for striking a joint while other sides may be utilized to grip the device.
It will be understood that although four specific transverse configurations of the sides of the outer peripheral surface 20 have been shown in FIGURE 3, any two or more sides may be the same, all four sides may be the same, or all four sides may have different configurations than those shown as exemplary in the drawing.
The embodiment 40 shown in FIGURES 6 to 8 is formed of a heavier continuous element 42 having an inner peripheral surface 44 defining a loop 46 and an outer peripheral surface 48 defining means for striking a joint 12, the outer peripheral surface 48 on all four sides of the embodiment of FIGURES 6 to 8 being shown as having the same arcuate transverse configuration, although two of the sides can have an arcuate outer peripheral surface 48 of a different curvature (not shown) to allow for striking joints of various dimensions.
The use and operation of the device of the instant invention will now be apparent. Either embodiment may be gripped by extending the fingers of one hand of the user through the loop 22 or 46 into grasping relationship with one of the sides of the device while the outer peripheral surface of an opposite side is utilized to strike the joint. In the embodiment of FIGURES 3 to 5 the user may selectively grip one of the sides so that an opposite side of a chosen transverse configuration will be available to strike a joint of a particular shape. Variation in the shape of the finished joint may be readily accomplished by grasping a difierent portion of the periphery of the continuous element 16. The embodiment of FIGURES 6 to 8 having all of the outer peripheral surfaces 48 the same, functions to allow new means for striking a joint when one or more of the surfaces is worn down by merely grasping a new portion of the periphery of the device,
It will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved hand jointer tool which satisfies all of the objectives of the instant invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
Since many embodiments may be made of the instant inventive concept and since many modifications may be made of the embodiments hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense. i
I claim:
1. A hand jointer tool of the class described comprising a substantially continuous body the area of which is substantially uniform throughout in transverse cross-section,
said body being formed in a closed loop configuration, the thickness of said body across said substantially uniform area being such that the hand jointer may be held at any point of its periphery by a user thereof with the same degree of grip, said body comprising four definite elongated configurations, each configuration serving to strike a different joint and wherein said four configurations are connected one to another in sequence to form a parallelogram in plan view thereof.
2. The hand jointer of claim 1 wherein the outer periphery of said hand jointer is shaped so as to provide means for striking a joint between masonry elements.
3. The hand jointer of claim 1 wherein said body has 1ug-like projections thereon which serve to strike a joint between masonry elements.

Claims (1)
1. A HAND JOINTER TOOL OF THE CLASS DESCRIBED COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY CONTINUOUS BODY THE AREA OF WHICH IS SUBSTANTIALLY UNIFORM THROUGHOUT IN TRANSVERSE CROSS-SECTION, SAID BODY BEING FORMED IN A CLOSED LOOP CONFIGURATION, THE THICKNESS OF SAID BODY ACROSS SAID SUBSTANTIALLY UNIFORM AREA BEING SUCH THAT THE HAND JOINTER MAY BE HELD AT ANY POINT OF ITS PERIPHERY BY A USER THEREOF WITH THE SAME DEGREE OF GRIP, SAID BODY COMPRISING FOUR DEFINITE ELONGATED CONFIGURATIONS, EACH CONFIGURATION SERVING TO STRIKE A DIFFERENT JOINT AND WHEREIN SAID FOUR CONFIGURATIONS ARE CONNECTED ONE TO ANOTHER IN SEQUENCE TO FORM A PARALLELOGRAM IN PLAN VIEW THEREOF.
