UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I lFE-ARING, OF SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BU'r-ToNHoLE-cUTTER'.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 82,281, dated May 14, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I. J. FEARING, of South Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented .a new and useful Attachment for Scissors, the Same being for Cutting Buttonholes in Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side View of my invention applied to a pair of scissors. Fig. 2, a section of the scissors, taken in the line :0, m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and efficient cutting device that may be very readily applied to a pair of scissors for the purpose of cutting button holes; the device when not required for use admitting of being readily detached from the scissors so that the latter may be used for their legitimate purpose.
' or eye a, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, by which the cutter may be fitted to one of the blades 6, of-the scissors.
The cutting edge of this cutter is at the widest end of the plate and it is formed of a shear or beveled edgec, and a. point (Z,
.cutting edge of the other blade 6, of the scissors. The small end 7, of the cutter plate serves as a stop for the blade 6, and prevents the blade of the scissors coming in contact at their outer parts and cutting the fabric.
From the above description it will be seen that when the cutter A, is applied to the bladeb, a slit maybe cut through the cloth equal to the length of the cutter A, and the length of the blade of course should corre spond to the desired length of the button hole. Cutters therefore of different sizes may be used according to the size of the button holes required. The point d, of the cutter A punctures the cloth previous to the out and greatly facilitates the operation.
I do not confine myself to the means herein shown and described for securing the cutter to the scissors, for various plans may be devised for that purpose; but
Ido claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A supplemental cutting blade A, con structed substantially as described and applied to a pair of scissors to operate substantially asand for the purpose herein set forth.
ISRAEL J. FEARING. itnesses FRANCIS S. Tommy, BENJ. F. WHITE.
