UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. SMEAD, or-sr. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
HOLDER FOR LEGAL BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,758, dated July 21-, 1885.
Application filed November 18, 1884, (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. SMEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Blank- Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof one of the holders. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 4 isa face View of the detaching implement.
This invention has relation to means for holding blanks, envelopes, &c.; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the case, which is usually made with beveled sides and open front; but the form of the case may be such as to suit the taste. In any case, however, the transverse bearing-bars B are employed, these bars being arranged in tiers, one back of another, each bar in rear being higher than that which is in front of it. By this means convenient access to the upper ends of the rear holders is afforded.
The holders 0 are hung on the bearingbars B by means of flanges, hooks, or slide projections d, which engage said bars. Each holder consists of two sections, E E,which are located on the right and left, and form the sides of the holder and portions of the back and front. The interval between the sections can be made greater or less by adjustment of the sections from or toward each other, and in this way each holder may be made wider or narrower, in order to fit blanks of any size transversely, according to requirement.
In order to provide for the adjustment of the holders with reference to depth, each section is furnished with an adjustable bottom piece, G, the top of which is usually beveled to slope from rear to front in order to raise the upper edges of the blanks in rear, so that they can be conveniently separated when one is wanted for use. The bottom piece is connected to the vertical front and back walls of the holder-section by devices which furnish adjustment. In the construction shown the walls of the section are provided with keyslots h, larger at one end than the other, and the bottom piece with headed tacks or studs is, adapted to slip through said slots and to be fastened by a right or left movement of the bottom piece. In the vertical walls of the holder section these slots are arranged in series at different heights, so that the bottom piece can be removed from one set and adjusted in connection with another set at a different depth, according to the breadth of the blank to be held. Usually the holdersections are-made of sheet metal, which is bent in proper form to provide the hook portion (I in front at its upper part, the side wall, and the front and rear walls. The bot tom piece, G, is preferably of wood.
Several holders may be affixed to one bearing-bar, B, when the case is of sufficient length.
In order to take out the holder-sections or to move the same in making the adjustments, a three-'pronged instrument, Z, will be found convenient.
In this instrument the middle prong, D, is formed with a hook, F, bent at its end, which is designed to engage a perforation, I, made in the back wall of the holder'section.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination .of the holder having one of its walls provided with aseries of keyslots, and the removable bottom having a stud or studs to pass through the said slots and engage the same, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the frame or case having the horizontal holder-bars, of the blank-holder sections, suspended from the said holder-bars and provided with a series of key-slots, and the inclined removable bottom having studs or tack-heads to pass through and engage the said slots, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVitnesses: CHARLES R. SMEAD.
HENRY V. OURTIs, WM. S. MOORE.
