(Cl. 2151) The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a made-up bow tie and has for one of its objects to provide, as hereinafter more fully revealed and set forth, a ready-made bow tie characterized by a novel shaping form or former and complemental clip means carried thereby and structurally designed for detachably fastening the ready-to-wear tie in a well-known manner to the folds of the wearers shirt collar.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a bow tie of the character described comprising a one-piece bowknot-shaping form or former of unique construction for mounting the made-up tie on the clip.
Still another important object of the present invention is to provide an improved bow tie of the character set forth which may be expeditiously assembled without hand stitching.
Other objects of this invention are to provide an improved bow tie which is comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a view in rear elevation of an improved bow tie constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a plan view thereof;
FIGURE 3 is a view in transverse section of an enlarged scale, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of FIG- URE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the frame or former; and
FIGURE 5 is a plan view of the former blank.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral 6 designates generally the bow tie proper. The tie 6 which, of course, may be of any suitable material, comprises the flared Wings 7. The tie 6 further includes, at an intermediate point, a bowknot in the form of a strap or band 8.
Embodied in the bowknot of the tie 6 is a novel shaping form or former 9 of suitable resilient sheet metal. In the embodiment shown, the form 9 includes an elongated median plate 10 having a generally U-shaped intermediate or bight portion 11. The plate 10 further includes upwardly, rearwardly and then downwardly and forwardly bent end portions providing resilient loops 12 having free serrated edges providing teeth 13 which are adapted to bite into the end portions of the strap 8 from which the bowknot is fashioned and made. Struck from the inner portions of the loops 12 are resilient, forwardly convergent coacting jaws 14. The jaws 14 terminate in opposed teeth 15 which are adapted to bite into the looped median portion of the tie 6. When the jaws 14 with the teeth 15 thereon are struck from the loops 12, outwardly directed teeth 16 are left on said loops for engagement in the knot or band 8 of the tie.
The form 9 further includes a pair of bendable fingers 17 which are struck rearwardly from the bight portion 11 of the plate 10, leaving a transverse slot 18 in said plate.
The fingers 17 provide means for mounting the form 9 with the tie 6 thereon on a collar clip 19.
The clip 19 comprises a pair of substantially duplicate, opposed coacting resilient inner and outer bars 20 and 21, respectively. The bars 20 and 21 comprise opposed, substantially U-shaped intermediate portions 22. Further, the bars 20 and 21 are angulated at intermediate points in a manner to provide opposed resilient jaws 23 which are adapted to receive and grip the folds of a collar therebetween. The jaws 23 are normally in abutting engagement with each other. A pin or rod 24 is affixed at its ends to the opposed intermediate U-shaped portions 22 of the bars 20 and 21 for securing said bars together under tension.
Closely adjacent the respective intermediate portion 22 thereof, the inner bar 20 has formed therein openings 25. The openings 25 are for the reception of the bendable fingers 17 for mounting the former 9 on the clip 19. As best seen in FIGURE 2 of the drawing, the fingers 17 are inserted through the openings 25 and then bent or clinched for securing the clip to the former.
It is thought that the invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the intermediate portion of the tie 6 is longitudinally folded in a manner to provide a loop or fold 26 which is tucked into the clamp provided by the resilient jaws 14 where it is anchored by the teeth 15. The knot, band or strap 8 is then tightened and the end portions thereof are tucked between the ends of the loops 12 and the bight portion 11 of the plate 10 where they are anchored by the teeth 13. As shown in FIGURE 3 of the drawing, the teeth 16 are also adapted to bite into the knot or band 8. Thus, the tie 6 is shaped and securely fastened to the former 9. To mount the assembly on the collar clip 19, the fingers 17 are simply inserted through the openings 25 and bent outwardly, as shown. The resilient jaws 23 of the clip 19 receive and grip the folds of a collar therebetween for securing the tie in position in an obvious manner. With the end portions of the knot or strap 8 firmly anchored by the teeth 13 and 16, the present widespread practice of stitching the ends of said band on adjacent portions of the tie is abolished. The toothed resilient jaws 14 also contribute to shaping the tie in a manner to enhance the appearance thereof in addition to securing said tie firmly to the former. As shown to advantage in FIGURE 3 of the drawing, the construction and arrangement is such that the U-shaped or bight portion 11 of the plate 10 serves as a guide for deflecting the end portions of the knot or strap 8 into the loops 12 for engagement with the teeth 13.
It is believed that the many advantages of a pre-formed or tied bow tie constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the article is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A made-up bow tie comprising a shaping and fabricating form embodying a median plate portion having ends thereof bent upon themselves and defining upper and lower spaced parallel loops, a bow-extending lengthwise across and opposed to said plate portion, a complemental bowknot comprising a strap separate from the bow, said strap being wrapped around a cooperating median portion of said bow and having end portions conformingly bound around the respective end loops, portions of the respective loops which are proximal to the plate portion being provided with teeth and said teeth engaging free terminal ends of said end portions of the strap and retaining said end portions in their knot-retaining position.
2. A made-up bow tie in accordance with claim 1, and wherein said form is provided, in addition to said end loops, with a pair of opposed coaching jaws, a portion of the bow intermediate the respective outer ends thereof being fitted and retained between said jaws.
3. The bow tie defined in claim 2 and wherein said form comprises a single sheet of resilient metal having portions thereof bent upon themselves to define said jaws, said jaws projecting forwardly from said plate portion.
4. A bow tie as defined in claim 2 and wherein the intermediate portion of the bow is longitudinally creased and thus folded on itself, the folded crease extending lengthwise but being confined to the median portion of the bow and the folds thereof being inserted and clampingly held between said jaws.
5. The structure according to claim 4 and wherein said jaws are elongated and are provided along forward lengthwise edges with laterally directed serrations providing teeth and said teeth being pressed into the fibers of the folds of said how to achieve the desired jaw-clamping and bow-retaining result.
6. A made-up bow tie comprising a shaping and fabricating form embodying a median plate portion having ends thereof bent upon themselves and defining upper and lower spaced parallel loops, a bow extending lengthwise across and opposed to said plate portion, a complemental bowknot comprising a strap separate from the bow, said strap being wrapped around a cooperating median portion of said bow and having end portions conformingly bound around the respective end loops, portions of the respective loops which are proximal to the plate portion being provided with teeth and said teeth engaging free terminal ends of said end portions of the strap and retaining said end portions in their knot-retaining position, and means for detachably but retentively mounting the made-up bow tie to the usual folds of the intended wearers shirt collar, said means comprising a collar clip, said clip having opposed resilient gripping jaws to clampingly grip the aforementioned folds of the collar, said clip embodying a pair of complemental bars, the median portion of one of said bars having perforations therein and the aforementioned plate portion being provided with a pair of rearwardly projecting bendable assembling and retaining fingers, said fingers passing through the perforations provided therefor and being clenched to and thus joining the clip with said plate portion.
7. The structure defined in claim 6 and in combination, said bars having intermediate opposed generally U- shaped portions, and a stabilizing pin interposed between the respective bent portions and having its ends fixedly joined thereto.
8. A made-up bow tie comprising a bow and complemental bowknot fabricating and shaping form comprising a plate portion having a pair of struck-out bendable clipattaching and retaining fingers, portions of the plate above and below the fingers being bent upon themselves and defining a pair of strap-wrapping loops having edge portions, said loops being in general spaced-apart parallelism and 'having rows of teeth along said edge portions adjacent to the fingers, and having additional teeth in rows generally parallel to the first-named teeth, said plate portion being further provided with a pair of forwardly projecting opposed gripping jaws and said jaws terminating in laterally directed opposed clamping teeth, and an attaching and retaining collar clip having complemental bars, one of said bars being provided with openings and said fingers being passed through the respective perforations and being clenched against the plate portion and thus attaching the clip to the form.

Claims (1)

1. A MADE-UP BOW TIE COMPRISING A SHAPING AND FABRICATING FORM EMBODYING A MEDIAN PLATE PORTION HAVING ENDS THEREOF BENT UPON THEMSELVES AND DEFINING UPPER AND LOWER SPACED PARALLEL LOOPS, A BOW-EXTENDING LENGTHWISE ACROSS AND OPPOSED TO SAID PLATE PORTION, A COMPLEMENTAL BOWKNOT COMPRISING A STRAP SEPARATE FROM THE BOW, SAID STRAP BEING WRAPPED AROUND A COOPERATING MEDIAN PORTION OF SAID BOW AND HAVING END PORTIONS CONFORMINGLY BOUND AROUND THE RESPECTIVE END LOOPS, PORTIONS OF THE RESPECTIVE LOOPS WHICH ARE PROXIMAL TO THE PLATE PORTION BEING PROVIDED WITH TEETH AND SAID TEETH ENGAGING FREE TERMINAL ENDS OF SAID END PORTIONS OF THE STRAP AND RETAINING SAID END PORTIONS IN THEIR KNOT-RETAINING POSITION.
