To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE N. M. KRIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ursery-Ohairs, of which the following is a specification, to wit:

Thisinvention relates to an improvement in childrens chairs; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, substantially aswill be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair used as a high chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in position for use asababy jumper or carriage. Fig. 3 is a side view of the chair-seat detached and used separately from the long legs, and Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing a modification of the devices for adjustably securing the chair-seat upon the jumper.

A represents the chair seat or bottom, constructed of a square or rectangular frame covered with a seating of veneer, cane, upholstering, or other desired device. The front and rear legs,B B,of this seatarepivoted upon the seat-frame, and both extend a short distance below the seat to form a low chair. Above the seat the legs are connected by arms A, pivoted thereto, and the rear ones, B, are extended upward to form the back A also upholstered or finished in any desired manner. These legs B B are preferably pivoted in notches a a, formed in the corners of the seatframe,in order that the outer sides of both the seat and its legs may be flush, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen that this forms a low chair-,which may be reclined at any convenient angle,and retained in that position by the tightness of the pivotal points, or preferably by a bar, Bflwhich is pivoted at a upon the arms, and formed with a slot, b, having notches b upon one side, which engage with a headed pin, b upon the seat-frame A, as fully shown in Fig. 3. clined, and resting upon the floor forms a brace or auxiliary leg, preventing the chair from being tipped backward when in this position. The weight upon this bar also retains the pin b in the notches b, as will be evident from the drawings.

0 0' represent the auxiliary legs used to lift the seat or small chair to the height necessary for use at a table. The front legs, 0, are provided with a pair of rigid bars or arms, c, projecting rearward, to which the rear legs, 0, are pivoted, and above these bars the legs are connected by springs 0 acting to draw their upper ends together. The upper ends of the legs 0 O are each provided with aslot, 0, opening on theirinner sides, in which are received the pin 1) and the pivot-pin a upon the seatframe,which is thus supported upon the auxiliary logs, the springs G causing them to be held firmly at all times.

When it is desired to use this device as a baby j umper or carriage, thelegs O G are sprung together at their lower ends, thus throwing the upper ends apart and releasing the small chair, which is removed. The elevating-legs O G are then turned upon their face, as in Fig. 2, and the rear ones, 0, being provided with a series of slots or notches, 0 formed either in the legs themselves or in a bar secured upon their rear or outer sides, the chair or seat is placed upon them, the pins 7; a restingin these notches, and being adjusted to or from the springs G to properly balance the device according to the weight of the occupant. This forms a jumper supported by springs, which yield to every motion of the child, and the chair may be reclined while in this position, and form an easy bed, in which it may sleep at pleasure.

To the front legs, 0, of the elevating-legs are secured suitable arms or castings, D D, carrying spindles d, on which are placed the wheels D, to convert the device into a carriage for use in the ordinary way. These arms D are detachably secured by screws (1, or their equivalent, and may be removed in a short time when the wheels are not desired.

The chair is provided with a foot-rest, E, and a table, E, and it will be seen that it may be used at any time, either with or independent of the auxiliary legs, and forms several articles of furniture in one.

In some of the liner kinds of these chairs it may not be desirable to use the angular legs 0 O, or to provide thelatter with a notched rack, as shown, and in that case the legs are made round and the seatAprovided with the springactuated hook G, (shown in Figs. 4 and 5,) which clasps the leg, and may be loosened at any time to adjust the seat upon the jumper by simply pressing down upon the knob g, as will be evident from the drawings, Fig. 5.

The pins 1) a are also used for the attachment of cordsff to form a swing, asin Fig. 3.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a chair-seat provided with supporting pins or projections, of an elevating-frame, the front and rear legs of which are hinged together and provided with a spring connection at one end, adapted to draw them together and clamp the pins or projections upon the chair-seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with a chairseat, of a Set of detachable legs having aspring connection. and provided with means for securing the seat upon their lower ends whenturn'ed down, whereby the device may be used for either a chair or jumper, substantially as shown and described.

' 8. The combi-nation,-with a chair-seat, of a set of detachable legs hinged together and con nected by a spring, means for securing the chair-seat upon their lower ends, and a series '0 0, having slots 0, arms 0, and connectingsprings G", and provided with the notches or slots 0 upon their rear sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. The seat A, provided with the pins 1) a in combination with a set of -detachable legs, 0 G, pivoted together and provided with the springs 0 the notches c and the detachable 7 wheel'carrying arms D, and wheels D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
