Calif., and Hugh D. Weckerly, 2972 Chatsworth Blvd.,
San Diego 6, (Ialif.
Filed May 20, 1963, Ser. No. 281,465 12 Claims. (CI. 5258) The present invention relates generally to a combination reglet and counterfiashing and more particularly to such a structure in which the reglet is provided with a clip or securing means by which the counterfiashing is held in inoperative position during repair or replacement of roof flashing.
In building construction, when a vertical wall such as a parapet, chimney or the like extends above the roof line, the roofing material is extended around the angle between these surfaces to form a flashing. To prevent leaks between the flashing and the wall a counterfiashing must be used. The counterflashings generally in use con sist of an anchor plate or reglet formed of sheet metal adapted to be secured to the wall above the flashing and a sheet metal strip overlapping the flashing and removably secured to the reglet by a suitable anchoring means, for repair and replacement of the roofing material and flashmg.
In construction of this character it is necessary to make separate installation of reglet and counterfiashing. This adds to building costs. When roofing repairs become necessary the complete counterfiashing and anchoring means must be removed while the work is in progress. This also adds to labor costs and introduces the possibility of damage to the counterfiashing.
It is accordingly, the primary object of this invention to provide an improved reglet or anchor plate and counterflashing that may be installed as one unit.
It is a further and important object of this invention to provide an improved combination of reglet and counterfiashing in which the reglet is provided with a clip or pocket for holding the counterfiashing out of the way during re-roofing operations.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide an improved reglet and counterfiashing unit that is adaptable for all types of building construction.
Finally it is an object of this invention to provide a combined reglet and counterfiashing unit of the aforementioned character which is simple and convenient to use and which will give generally eflicient and durable service.
With these and other objects definitely in view, this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings which form a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one form of our improved reglet and counterfiashing with the parts positioned as they would appear in an article ready for merchandising;
FIGURE 2 is a section of a wall with the reglet and counterfiashing of FIGURE 1 installed thereon;
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 but with the lower edge of the counterfiashing lifted away from the roof flashing and held in the clip hanger;
FIGURE 4 is a view showing a modified unit installed on a brick wall;
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIGURE 4 showing another modification installed on a wall of monolithic construction;
FIGURE 6 is a view similar to FIGURE 4 showing a further modification of our unit for installation on existing construction and FIGURE 7 is a view of a still further modified form of our unit installed on a vertical wall.
In the specification and throughout the several views like characters of reference are used to denote similar and like parts.
The counterfiashing of the present invention is intended to be used wherever such counterfiashing is usual or necessary and may be built into the wall as the construction progresses or applied to already existing wall structures.
In FIGURE 1 we have shown one form of our im proved unit in the form it will take when packaged and ready for merchandising. Essentially the unit consists of a metal reglet or anchor plate 20, a strip of flexible counterfiashing material 22 and a metal reinforcement 24 secured to one edge of the counterfiashing. For purposes of handling and storage the strip of Counterflashing material may be folded, as clearly shown and one of more straps or ties 26 of any suitable material applied thereto. This provides a convenient means for merchandising our improved unit.
In FIGURES 2 and 3 the improved unit just described is shown installed in a stucco wall construction. The metal reglet or anchor plate 20 is formed of any suitable sheet metal that is resistant to corrosion, such as galvanized iron, copper or aluminum or alloys thereof. The reglet 20 consists of a sheet metal member having an elongated channel portion indicated generally by the reference numeral 28 and an elongated clip or hanger portion 30, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. In this form of our invention, channel portion 2S and clip portion 3!) are positioned substantially normal to each other. Channel portion 28 is formed of a wall portion 32 and a spaced parallel flange 34 connected by an integrated bend 36. Integrally connected to flange 34, and at right angles thereto, is a base flange 38. The outer end of flange 38 is turned upwardly and then downwardly to form a finishing lip 40. Clip portion 30 extends inwardly from finishing lip 40 and consists of spaced flanges 42 and 44 joinedby an integrated band 46. A return bent portion 48 provides a retaining shoulder 50 in clip portion 30.
Counterflashing 22 comprises an elongated strip 52 of flexible material such as any of the well known synthetic plastics. One edge 54, which is the upper edge in the installed position, is secured in channel 28 between flanges 32 and 34. The other or lower edge 56 is provided with a metallic reinforcing channel member 58 which is secured thereto by crimping to provide an outwardly extending boss or shoulder 60.
In FIGURE 2 our counterfiashing is shown installed on new construction of the stucco exterior wall type. As is usual in this type of construction a wood framework is first erected. Numeral 62 indicates a section of studding of a vertical wall of such framework. A portionof the usual flashing 64 is shown positioned against vertical wall 62. This flashing is a continuation of roofing material 66 as clearly shown in FIGURE 7. The usual cant I 68 is provided at the junction of the vertical wall and 3 severed and the counterflashing dropped into the position shown in FIGURE 2. This completes the installation.
Our improved counterflashing greatly facilitates repair or replacement of the flashing 64 and/ or roofing 66. Should this work become necessary it is a relatively simple matter to lift the counterflashing S2 to expose flashing 64. The reinforced edge 56 is inserted in clip portion 30 with boss 60 in engagement with shoulder 50 to prevent acidental removal thereof. Upon completion of the work the counterflashing is returned to the position shown in FIGURE 2.
One particularly important aspect of our invention is that the improved counterflashing can be incorporated in various types of wall construction with slight modification of the reglet structure. In FIGURES 4-7 we have shown four such modifications.
In FIGURE 4 we have shown our counterflashing unit applied to a wall of brick or cement block construction. As is usual in this type of construction the courses of brick are separated by mortar joints 74. Embedded in one of the joints is the double thickness securing flange 76 of modified reglet 78. One edge of securing flange 76 is turned downwardly to form a stop shoulder while the other edge extends outwardly and downwardly in the form of a generally laterally extending flange 82. This flange is then bent back upon itself to form an intermediate flange 84 which is in turn bent outwardly to form a third flange 86. It .will be readily apparent that flanges 82 and 84 form a channel for receiving the upper edge of counterflashing 52 which is similar to channel 28 in the modification of FIGURE 2. Likewise, flanges 84 and 86 form a clip or hanger portion for receiving the lower edge of counterflashing 52, shown in the raised position in dotted lines.
In monolithic or concrete wall construction we prefer to embed the reglet in the wall with the counterflashing 52 folded therein. This permits the reglet to be secured, by staples or the like, to the concrete form for the pouring of the concrete wall 100. Such a construction is shown in FIGURE 5. In this form the reglet is shaped as a channel member having a bottom wall 88 and outwardly converging side walls 90 and 92. Side walls 92 is connected by an integrated bend to an intermediate flange 94 which is in turn connected to a flange 96 through a second integrated bend. It will be readily apparent that the parts 92, 94 and 96 form a channel portion for receiving one edge of counterflashing 52 and a clip or hanger portion for removably holding the other edge of counterflashing 52 in susbtantially the same way as the corresponding structure of FIGURE 4.
It is frequently necessary to apply counterflashing to an existing frame wall construction. FIGURE 6 illustrates a reglet that is adapted for such an installation. A base flange 98, which is mounted flush with wall 100, provides a means for attaching this modified reglet. As will be apparent from the disclosure in FIGURE 6 conventional building nails 102 are used for this purpose. Both the channel portion and the clip or hanger portion of this form of reglet are structurally the same as, and co-operate with the counterflashing in the same way, as the corresponding structure in FIGURES 4 and 5. The junction between wall 100 and the reglet is filled with a suitable waterproof mastic compound 104. Since the hanger portion in this form of our invention is upwardly inclined, suitable holes 99 are provided in the bottom thereof to prevent accumulation of moisture therein. FIGURE 7 shows our, improved reglet and counterflashing unit applied to a parapet wall constructtion. It is usual, in this type of construction, to provide a weatherproof cap or coping strip for the top of the wall. Reference numeral 106 indicates such a coping strip. Reglet 108 is modified for attachment to coping strip 106. To this end reglet 108 is provided with a base portion 110 which abuts the surface of wall 112 and is turned outwardly to provide a laterally extending flange 114. The
material of coping strip 106 extends over and around flange 114 and is lock seamed thereto as clearly shown in the drawing. In all other respects reglet108 is the same as that disclosed in FIGURE 4.
It should be noted that the reglets disclosed in FIG- URES 4-7 have one important feature in common. The channel portion and the clip or hanger portion are formed by bending one edge of the metal blank from which the reglet is formed into a generally flattened S-shaped formation with one wall common to both the channel portion and the clip portion, for example the wall 84 of FIG- URE 4. In all forms of the invention shown, the clip is substantially U-shaped in cross section. By reason of this particular formation, manufacture of the reglet is greatly facilitated and a substantial saving in metal is realized.
It is understood that minor variation from the form of the invention disclosed herein may be made without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, and that the specification and drawings are to be considered as merely illustrative rather than limiting.
