' HINGE FOR OFFSET DooRs Filed March l, 1961 IN VEN TOR.
#Q01/Mug# Wa@ United States Patent O 3,131,422 HINGE FR FFSE'I DQRS Frank P. Agius, 1027 Meyers Road, Alpena, Mich. Filed Mar. 1, 1%1, Ser. No. 92,610 2 Clairns (Cl. 16-'135) My invention relates generally to door hinges, and more particularly to hinges for cabinet doors.
The improved hinge of my invention can be used readily with inset or lipped cabinet doors. It is capable of accornrncdating 180 degrees of swing, and when the door is closed it is concealed substmtially when the door is viewed from the front of the cabinet.
My improved hinge construction makes it possible for a cabinet maker to eliminate unsightly pin or bolt hinges of conventional construction. The door can be finished to provide an ovenall clean Aappearance since the hinge elements are concealed substantially by the lipped portions of the door. Lipped doors can therefore be used in special applications where they could not have been used before.
For the purpose of particularly describing a preferred embodiment of my invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. l shows a front elevation view of a cabinet door employing the hinge construction of my invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged front elevation View of =a portion of the cabinet door shown in FIG. l;
FIG. 3 is .a partial cross sectional view of :the door of FIGS. 1 and 2 land is taken along section line 3 3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view of the door of FIGS. 1 and 2 and is taken along section line 4 4 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a view similar to the view of FIG. 3 but showing the cabinet door 4in ya full open position;
FIG. 6 is a front elevation View of the cabinet when the door assumes 4the position shown in FIG. 5; and
FIG. 7 is an isometric view of the offset hinge illustrated in the other views.
Referring rst to FIG. l, numeral 1) designates a cabinet door and number-al 12 designates a door frame. The door is hinged at the top and bottom so that it will pivot about the Ileft hand margin of the door as viewed in FIG. l. Numeral 14 designates a knob or handle for opening `and closing the door.
The hinge on the upper porrtion of the door 1t) shown in FIG. 2 Iand is generally designated by refe-rence character 16. It will be apparent from =an inspection of the views that the hinge 16 conforms to the configuration of the periphery of the door 10.
As previously indicated, .the door 10' is formed with -a recessed or lipped periphery, the 'lipped portion being designated by reference character 1.8. The portion of the door covering the opening of lthe frame 12 is inset within the door opening :and is designated by reference character 20. 'Ihe lipped portion 18 is 'adapted to overlie the periphery of the frame 12.
The hinge 16 comprises two portions that are sepanately identified by reference 4characters 22 and 24. The portion 22 is adapted to be secured to the frame 12 and the portion 24 is adapted to be secured to the door 10.
The portion 22 includes a base plate 26 that is adapted to be bolted to the inner peripheral surface 23 of the frame 12, suitable screws being provided for this purpose. An upright portion 32 is disposed at right angles with respect to the plane of portion 26 )and it is flush with respect to the outer surface 34 of the door frame 12.
As indicated in the views, tab 36 is adapted Ito overlie the outer periphery of the door 10.
Another portion 44 is formed at right angles with respect to ythe plane of pontion 42 and this pontion 44 is situated in engagement with and in face-to-ace relationship to the inner surface of ythe lipped portion 11S of the door lll. Hinge portion 24 funther includes an oiset tab 46 si-tuated at right angles with respect to the `portion 44. Tab 46 over-lies lthe upper edge of the 4lipped portion '18 of the door 10. The plane of the tab 46 is parfailel tothe plane of the portion 42. The tab 46 is pinned as shown to the `tab 36 by the Iaforementioned pin 38 The base 40 of .the hinge portion 24 is formed with three screw holes separately identified by reference characters 48, 50 and 52.
In assembling the door, screws 54 and 56 are used for initially securing la door 10 within the opening of frame 12. The screw openings 48 land 50 are elongated as indicated to permit a degree of adjustment of the door with respect to the frame when it is assembled in place. If the proper adjustment has been obtained, 'the screws 54 land 56 are tightened 'and a third screw 53 is inserted in the screw opening 52 to lock the hinge portion 24 securely in place with respect to the door 10.
The pin 38 is located relatively close to the plane of upright portion 32 of the hinge portion 22. The spacing is suflicient, however, to 'avoid interference between the lipped door portion 18 `and 4the frame 12 when the door is opened, as indicated in FIG. 5.
When the door 1@ is in the closed position, the hinge 16 is concealed substantially. rThe only portion of the hinge that is visible to the observer is the edge of the tabs 36 and 46.
The hinge portions can be formed during manufacture by a suitable stamping openation.
As best observed in FIG. 4, the opening in tab 46 for the pin 38 ofr'set to permit cleanance between the frame 12 and vthe inner edge of the lipped portion 18v of the door 1li. This clearance is equal to the combined thickness of the hinge pontions 32 and 44.
The hinge at the lower margin of the door 10` will, of cou-rse, be a mirror image of the hinge 16 il-lustnated in the drawings. 'I'hese hinges can 'be manufactured in pairs.
Having thus described a preferred embodiment of my invention, what I claim 'and desire .to secure by U.S. Letters Patent is:

A hinge for mounting :a rectangular lipped door within a fname having upper and lower horizontal portions and vertical side portions, the door being inset with respect to the frame land the peripheral portion of the door overlying the outer surtace of the frame, said hinge comprising a frame plate and a `door plate, said fname plate being adapted to be secured to the inner periphery of one of said horizontal frame portions and including a side pontion situated in -'ace-to-ace relationship with respect to the outer surface of said frame, la ta'b formed on and disposed at right angles with respect to said side portion, said door plate comprising ya portion secured to the inner inset portion of said door, la pontion situated at right angles with respect to said first named portion and an up night portion situated in faceato-face relationship with respect to fthe inner surface of the lipped periphery of said door, a tab on said door plate situated mating relationship with respect .to the tab on said frame plate, said door plate tab extending in a plane perpendicular to said upright portion, and means for pinning said tabs together.
2. A hinge for mounting a rectangular lipped door Within Ia frame having upper and lower horizontal portions and vertical side pontions, the door being inset Wit-h respect to rthe iframe and the peripheral portion of said door overlying the outer surface of said frame, said hinge comprising a frame plate, said yfname plate including a rst portion .adapted [to be secured to the inner periphenal surface of said 4frame, a second portion adapted to overlie the outer surface of said frame in face-to-ace relaltionship with respect to the same, Iand a third portion extending in a plane perpendicular :to s-aid second portion, said hinge including also -a door plate, said door plate having a first portion, means for securing said rst portion to the inner inset surface of said door comprising spaced screw holes therein, at least one of said screw holes being elongated, and screws extending through said holes into said inset surface whereby an adjustment of said door Within said frame assembly can be obtained before the door is permanently secured to said door plate, 'a second portion disposed at right angles with respect to said rst portion and adapted to overlie the peripheral surface of said inert portion, a third portion situated perpendicular- 1y with respect to said second portion, xand a fourth pontion extend-ing perpendicular-ly with respect to said `first and third por-tions, the fourth portion of said door plate heling pinned to Athe third portion of said frame plate, the iirst, second, 'and .third portions of said plate being concealed entirely when said door is closed and the door is viewed along `a line of vision that 'is perpendicular to the plane of Athe door.
