Description

Nov. 5, 1963 R. E. WORK 3,109,438
HAIR WAVING APPLIANCE Filed March 18, 1959 INVENTOR United States Patent 3,1il9,433 HAIR WAVING APPLIANCE Ruth E. Work, 7195 Allison Sh, Landovver Hills, Md. Filed Mar. 18, 1959, Ser. No. 80%,244 2 Claims. ((11. 132-31) The present invention relates to a hair waving appliance and particularly to a hair waving appliance which can be used in the home as well as in shops.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a hair waving appliance in which a plurality of curlers are secured in a prearranged pattern and applied to the hair as a unit.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hair waving appliance of the class described above in which the curlers are spring wound into hair curling position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair curling appliance having the curlers detachably secured thereto so that the wave pattern may be varied at will.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair waving appliance in which each curler is positioned adjacent the hair to be curled and the appliance serves as a guide for selecting the hair to be waved by the curler.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in light of the attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the invention shown attached to the head of the user;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged liragmentary perspective view of one curler of the invention shown being applied to the hair;
FIGURE 3 is an end elevation of one of the curlers in rolled position;
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary plan view shown partially broken away and in section of one of the curlers in unrolled position; and
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary front elevation of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now tothe drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral '10 indicates generally a hair waving appliance constructed in accordance with the invention.
The hair waving appliance includes a plurality of interconnected horizontal bars 11 and transverse bars 12 which are arranged to form a plurality of openings 13. The bars 11, 12 are formed integrally of plastic or other suitable flexible material which can be readily shaped to the head 14 of the user.
A curler, indicated generally at 15, is secured to the bars 11 underlying the openings 13 and arranged to unroll to the position shown in FIGURE 2 when pulled by the operator. The curler 15 has a central panel 16 and a pair of oppositely disposed inwardly folding side panels 17. The panel 16 has a plurality of coiling springs 18 embedded therein and normally biased to tend to roll the panel 16 into the position illustrated in FIGURE 3.
In waving the hair with the appliance illustrated at 10, the device is fitted to head 14 with the hair in underlying position with respect thereto. The hair is pulled through the opening 13 by means of a rat-tail comb beginning with the uppermost opening .13 closest to the crown of the head 14. The curler 15 is then unrolled and the hair 19 is brought into contact with the panel 16, with the panels 17 folded to overlie the hair 19, as can be seen in FIGURE 2.
The curler 15 is then released and rolled to the position illustrated in FIGURE 3. Each curler 15 is rolled 3,109,438 Patented Nov. 5, 1963 in turn until the hair has been set. After the required time has expired, the curlers 15 are unrolled and the curled hair 19 is removed therefrom.
After the hair has been completely removed from the curlers 15, the appliance It) is removed from the head as a unit.
While the invention has been disclosed as a simple hair curling appliance, it should be understood that it can be used with home permanent type kits, as well as with other cold permanent waving solutions when a more permanent wave is required.
A modified form of the invention is illustrated in FIG- URE 5 wherein a cloth curler 15A has a central panel 16A and a pair of integrally formed side panels 17A arranged to: fold into overlying relation thereto. The central panel 16A has the outer end thereof provided with a lead retainer strap 18A. The central panel 16A is detachably secured to the bar 11 by means of separable fasteners 20 of conventional design.
The modified form of the invention shown in FIGURE 5 is used in the same manner as the preferred form of the invention, with the curler 15A being wound by hand and secured in position with the lead retainer strap 18A.
Having thus described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A hair waving appliance comprising a head-shaped covering consisting of a plurality of horizontal bars interconnected by a plurality of integral transverse bars with said horizontal bars and said transverse bars defining a plurality of openings through which the users hair may be drawn, and a hair rolling curler underlying each of said openings for curling hair extending through said openings, each of said curlers being secured to a respective one or said horizontal bars, each of said curlers being comprised of a central panel, a pair of oppositely disposed inwardly folding side panels integrally formed on said central panel, and a plurality of coiling springs imbedded in said central panel, said springs being normally biased so as to maintain said central panel and said side panels in hair curling position.
2. A hair waving appliance comprising a head-shaped covering consisting of a plurality of horizontal bars interconnected by a plurality of integral transverse bars with said horizontal bars and said transverse bars defining a plurality of openings through which the users hair may be drawn, and a hair rolling curler underlying each of said openings for curling hair extending through said openings, each of said curlers being secured to a respective one of said horizontal bars, each of said curlers being comprised of a central panel, a pair of integrally formed side panels, and a deformable retainer strap secured on said central panel for retaining said curler in hair curling position.
