First, to provide a lock for slidable closures which is adapted to be locked in closed position and to receive a seal, there being, when manipulated or used as designed to be used, no strain upon the seal likely to break or fracture the same.
Second, to provide a lock means for slidable closures Which is easily manipulated to and from locking position and is automatically held when adjusted to locking position so that a seal or padlock, or the like, may be applied.
Third, to provide a securing means for slidable closures adapted to receive a seal which cannot be opened without breaking the seal.
Fourth, to provide a lock structure having these advantages which is relatively simple in its parts and easily manipulated in use.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims. A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

see FIGS. 2 and 5. The pivot Ztl of the bolt 21 is disposed radially relative to the pivot 9 of the bolt support member. In the embodiment illustrated, the keeper 23 is in the form of a rod which is disposed transversely within the housing 23 which is set into the sill. In the accompanying drawing we have illustrated our invention as embodied in an upwardly acting door of the sectional type in which 1 represents a door frame, 2 the sill and 3 and 4 sections of a door, 4 being the bottom section of the door. The bottom section 4 is desirably provided with a resilient sill engaging member 5 on its bottom edge, which is conventionally shown. The embodiment of our invention illustrated comprises a base member 6 which is lixedly secured to the closure member by fasteners indicated conventionally at 7. This base member is formed of sheet stock and has an outwardly ottset embossment 8 perforated to receive the pivot 9, which is secured by means of the nut 10 threaded upon its inner end and housed within the embossment 8. The pivot has a head 11 on its outer end.
The bolt support member, designated generally by the numeral 12, is desirably formed as an integral casting and has a laterally projecting integral handle 13. This suption, as is illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 9, the bolt being also shovm in keeper engaging position by dotted lines in FIG. 5.
It Will be understood that the spring 1'6 acts to disengage the bolt from the keeper and to: automatically swing the bolt support member to its retracted position, as shown in FIG. 5, in which position the bolt engages the combined stop and lock receiving member 24 which in the embodiment illustrated is struck out from the base member. The bolt is yieldingly urged against the stop 25 on the support member by the coil spring 26, which is engaged with a hook 27 on the bolt and supportedly connected on the handle by the stud 28, the inner end of the handle being recessed at 29 to receive the spring. When in actuated position, the bolt is engaged by the stop or thrust member 30 on the bolt support member. The stop 24 also serves as a stop for the handle when the bolt is in actuated or keeper engaging position. When the handle is swung to bolt actuated position, it is automatically engaged by the latch 31 which is pivoted on the base member at 32 in upwar-idly and laterally spaced relation to the member 24, and is actuated by the spring 33 mounted on the bracket or lug 34 which, in the embodiment illustrated, is struck out from the base member. The handle is provided with a keeper 35 with which this latch automatically engages when the handle -is swung to bolt actuated position and in supported relation to the stop member 24, see FIG. l. This latch 3l is provided with an upwardly projecting finger piece 36. The handle is provided with a locking lug 37 projecting therefrom and positioned to be disposed in side by side relation to the stop 24 when the handle is in bolt actuating position, this lug having an opening 38 therein, the stop having an aligned opening therein adapted to receive a padlock or other locking member or element 39, a seal member, or both, the padlock only bein-g illustrated in FIG. l.
The handle of this embodiment is provided with a hole 40 at its outer end adapted to receive a seal member conventionally shown at 41 in FIG. l, the sill being provided with a strap 42 with which the seal may be engaged. The seal and the stra-p are conventionally shown. It will be understood that seals are Widely used `on conveyanees and they do not constitute locking means for holding the parts in closed position, but merely to indicate whether or not the conveyance had been opened. 'Il-he applicants locking means are especially designed for use in upwardly acting doors of vehicles but may be used as a locking means for doors on buildings. One of the attained objects of the invention is the rapidity and ease of operation. With the lock 39 disengaged, the operator disengages the latch and the bolt support member is swung to bolt retracting position, las illustrated in FIG. 5, the bolt then engaging the stop member 24. 'To engage the bolt it is only necessary to swing the handle into engagement with the stop member 24, and the latch automatically engages to retain the bolt in locked position, permitting the operator to apply the padlock or other locking element, or -a seal, or both as may be desired.
The correct `and desired positioning of the seal 4l is illustrated in FIG. l, however, manipulators may either accidentally or intentionally position the seal as is` shown in FIGS. 9 and 10. When that is done, even though the seal is in such position as to permit the releasing or disengagement of the latch 3i and the upward swinging of the hand-le as is indicated in FIG. 10, as far as the seal will permit without breaking, 'the bolt cannot be disengaged from the keeper, see FIG. 10. As stated, it is intended that the seal be positioned as illustrated in FlG. 1 and that :a lock 39 be used Where desired, but in the event that the seal is positioned as in FIGS. 9 and l0 the door cannot be opened without break-ing `or fraoturing the seal.
We have illustrated and described our invention in a highly practical commercial embodiment thereof. We have not illustrated or described certain modifications and adaptations in structural details, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody our invention as may be desired.
Having thus described .the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l1. A lock comprising a base member having a bolt support member pivot projecting outwardly therefrom, a bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot and having a laterally projecting handle, said bolt support member having a bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge opposite said handle, a coil Iretracting spring for said bolt support member disposed in embracing relation to said pivot with one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, a bolt disposed with its inner end within said bolt support member fand pivotally connected thereto in radially spaced relation to its said bolt support member pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw, said bolt suppont member having a bolt retracting lug radially spaced from said bolt suppont member pivot and having a bolt holder lug disposed to yengage said bolt when said bolt support member is actuated to position the bolt in i-ts keeper-engaging .position, a spring connected to said bolt support member and Ito said bolt and acting to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, a stop on said base member positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement `with said .retnacting lug thereby limiting the opening movement of said bolt support member and to be engaged by said handle when said bolt support member is Iadjusted rto position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, said handle having a lug thereon which is disposed adjacent said stop yon said base member when said support member is positioned to Iaotuate said bolt to keeper-engaging position, said stop on said support member and said lug on said handle having aligned openings therein adapted to receive locking means, and a manually releasable spring actuated latch pivotally mounted on said base member, said handle having a keeper which said latch automatically engages when the handle is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper engaging position.

A lock comprising a base member having a bolt suppont member pivot projecting outwardly therefrom, a bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot and having 4a laterally projecting handle, said bolt support member having a bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge 'opposite said handle, a coil retraoting spring for said bolt support member disposed in embracing relation to said pivot with one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, a bolt disposed with its inner end Within said bolt support member and pivotally connected thereto in radially spaced relation :to its said bolt support member pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug radially spaced from said bolt support member pivot and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage sad bolt Iwhen said bolt support member is actuated to position the bol-t in its keeper-engaging position, a spring connected to said bolt support member and to said bolt and acting to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, a stop on said Ibase member positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug thereby limiting the opening movement of said bolt support member and to be engaged by said handle when said bolt support member is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, said handle having a lug thereon which is disposed adjacent said stop on said base member when said support member is positioned to act-nate said bolt to keeperengaging position, and a manually releasab-le spring actuated latch pivotally mounted lon said base member, said handle having a keeper which said latch automatically engages when the handle is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper engaging position.

A lock comprising a base member having a bolt support member pivot projecting outwardly therefrom, `a bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot and having a laterally projecting handle, said bolt support member having a bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge opposite said handle, a coil retracting spring for said bolt support member disposed in embracing relation to said pivot with one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, a bolt disposed with its inner end Within said bolt support member and pivotally connected thereto in radially spaced relation to its said bolt support member pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw mounted on its outer end :for adjustment longitudinally thereof, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug radially spaced from said bolt support member pivot and having a bolt Aholder lug disposed to engage said bolt when said bolt support member is actuated to position the bolt in its lkeeper-engaging position, a spring connected to said bolt support member and to said bolt and acting to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, a stop .on said base member positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug thereby limiting the openingmovement of said bolt support member and to be engaged by said handle when said bolt support member is adjusted to position said bolt in keeperengaging position, said handle having a lug thereon which is disposed adjacent said stop on said base member when said support member is positioned to actuate said bolt to keeper-engaging position, and a manually releasable spring actuated latch pivotally mounted on said base member, said handle having 'a keeper which said latch automatioally engages when the handle is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper engaging position.

A lock comprising a base member having a bolt support member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support rotatably mounted on said pivot, said bolt support member having la bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge, a retracting spring ifor said bolt support member housed therein and supportedly engaged with said pivot with one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, a bolt disposed with its inner end within and pivotally connected to -said bolt support member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jan/,said bolt support member havin-g a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, a spring supportedly connected to said bolt support member and coacting with said bolt to yieldingly 'urgek it against said bol-t retracting lug, said base member having a stop positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said reti-acting lug and thereby limit the opening stroke of said bolt support member and engaged by said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, said support member having a lug thereon positioned adjacentsaid stop on said base when said support member is positioned to actuate said areasaa bolt to keeper-engaging position, said stop on said support member and said lug on said support member being adapted to receive locking means, and a manually releasable automatically engageable latch mounted on said base member to automatically engage said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeperengaging position.

A lock comprising a base member having a bolt support member pivot, Ia manually adjustable bolt support rotatably mounted on said pivot, said bolt support member having a bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge, a retracting spring for said bolt support member housed therein and supportedly engaged Iwith said pivot wit-h one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, -a bolt disposed with its inner end within and pivotally connected to said bolt support -member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, a spring supportedly connected to said bolt support member and coacting with said bolt to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, said base member having la stop positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug yand thereby limit the opening stroke of said bolt support member and engaged by said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, land a manually releasable automatically entgageable latch mounted on said base me-mber to automatically engage said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position.

A lock comprising a base member having a bolt support member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support rotatably mounted on said pivot, said bolt support member having a bolt receiving recess therein opening at its edge, a retracting spring for said bolt support member housed therein and supportedly engaged With said pivot with one end thereof connected to said base member and the other to said bolt support member, a bolt disposed with its inner end Within and pivotally connected to said bolt support member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw mounted thereon for adjustment longitudinally thereof, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, a spring supportedly connected to said boltsupport member and coacting with said bolt to yielding-ly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, said base member having a stop positioned to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug and thereby limit the opening stroke of said bolt support member and engaged by Said bolt support member when it is adjusted'to position said bolt in keeperengaging position, and a manually releasable automatically engageable latch mounted on said base member to automatically engage `said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position.

A lock comprising, a base member having a bolt support member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot, a retracting spring for said bolt support member operatively connected thereto and to said base member, a bolt pivotally connected to said bolt support member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, `said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt which is in keeper-engaging position, a spring connected to said bolt support member and bolt to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, said base member having a stop member disposed to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug, thereby limiting the opening stroke of said bolt support member and a stop engaged by said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position `said bolt in keeper-engaging position, said support member having a lug thereon which is disposed adjacent said stop on said on said base when said support member is in bolt actu-ating position, said -srtop on said support member and said lug on said suppont member being adapted to receive locking means, and a latch mounted on said base member to engage said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position.

A look comprising, a base member having a bolt suppont member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot, a retracting spring for said bolt support member operatively connected thereto and to said base member, a bolt pivotally connected to said bolt support member in radially spaced relationto its said pivot, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt which is in keeper-engaging position, a spring connected to said bolt support member and bolt to yieldingly urge it against said bolt retracting lug, said base member having a stop member disposed to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug, thereby limiting the opening stroke of ysaid bolt support member and a stop engaged by said bolt support member when it i-s adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, and a latch mounted on said base member to engage said bolt support member when it is adjusted -to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position.

A lock comprising a base member, a bolt support member pivotally mounted on said base member yand having a laterally projecting handle, a retracting spring for said bolt support member mounted on said base member rand operatively connected to said bolt for actuating it to keeper-engaging position, said bolt having a keeper-engaging jaw with a keeper recessed therein of substantial depth, said bolt support member having -a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage the bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, said bolt support member having a laterally projecting arm which constitutes a handle, said base member having a stop positioned to be engaged by said arm when the bolt is in keeperengaging position, said arm and said stop on said base member having seal-receiving openings therein, said keeper-engaging rece-ss in said bolt jaw being of such depth that the bolt is not releasably disengaged from the coacting keeper during a substantial degree of bolt releasing movement of said bolt support member to such a degree of bolt releasing movement as would permit disengagement Ithereof from the coacting keeper without fractum'ng the seal engageable With said support member and said base member.

A lock comprising a base member, a bolt support member pivotally mounted on said base member and having a laterally projecting handle, and a retracting spring for said bolt support member mounted on said base member 4and operatively connected tto -said bolt for `actuating it to Ikeeper-engaging position, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and hav-ing a bolt holder lug disposed to engage the bolt when it -is in keeper-engaging position, said bolt support member having a lateral-ly pro- -jecting arm which constitutes a handle, said base member having a stop positioned to be engaged by said arm When the bolt -is in keeper-engaging position, said stop and said arm having seal openings therein adapted to receive a seal and automatically engaging manually releasable latch means mounted on said base member to automatically engage said handle when it is adjusted to actuate said l`bolt to keeper engaging position.

A lock comprising, a base member adapted for fixed attachment to a door having a bolt support member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot, a bolt pivotally connected to said bolt support member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, said bolt support member having la bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, said base member having a stop member 4disposed to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in engagement with said retracting lug,` thereby limiting the opening stroke of said bolt support member and engaged by said bolt support member when it is `adjusted to p0- sition said bolt in keeper-engaging position, sai-d Support member having a lug thereon which is disposed adjacent said stop member on said base member when said support member is in bolt actuating position, said stop on said base member and said lug on said bolt support member being adapted to receive locking and/or seal means, and automatically engaging manually released means mounted on said base member to automatically engage said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position.

A lock comprising, a base member adapted for fixed attachment to a door having a bolt support member pivot, a manually adjustable bolt support member rotatably mounted on said pivot, a bolt pivotally connected to said bolt support member in radially spaced relation to its said pivot, said bolt support member having a bolt retracting lug and having a bolt holder lug disposed to engage said bolt when it is in keeper-engaging position, said base member having a stop member disposed to be engaged by said bolt with said bolt in supported engagement with said retracting lug, thereby limiting the opening stroke of said bolt support member and which is engaged by said bolt support member when it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeper-engaging position, and au automatically engaging manually released latch mounted on said base member to retainingly engage said bolt support member When it is adjusted to position said bolt in keeperengaging position. s

Claims (1)

10. A LOCK COMPRISING A BASE MEMBER, A BOLT SUPPORT MEMBER PIVOTALY MOUNTED ON SAID BASE MEMBER AND HAVING A LATERALLY PROJECTING HANDLE, AND A RETRACTING SPRING FOR SAID BOLT SUPPORT MEMBER MOUNTED ON SAID BASE MEMBER AND OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO SAID BOLT FOR ACTUATING IT TO KEEPER-ENGAGING POSITION, SAID BOLT SUPPORT MEMBER HAVING A BOLT RETRACTING LUG AND HAVING A BOLT HOLDER LUG DISPOSED TO ENGAGE THE BOLT WHEN IT IS IN KEEPER-ENGAGING POSITION, SAID BOLT SUPPORT MEMBER HAVING A LATERALLY PROJECTING ARM WHICH CONSTITUTES A HANDLE, SAID BASE MEMBER HAVING A STOP POSITIONED TO BE ENGAGE BY SAID ARM WHEN THE BOLT IS IN KEEPER-ENGAGING POSITION, SAID STOP AND SAID ARM HAVING SEAL OPENINGS THEREIN ADAPTED TO RECEIVE A SEAL AND AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGING MANUALLY RELEASABLE LATCH MEANS MOUNTED ON SAID BASE MEMBER TO AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGE SAID HANDLE WHEN IT IS ADJUSTED TO ACTUATE SAID BOLT TO KEEPER ENGAGING POSITION.
