GODFREY H. LASAR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BARB-WIRE MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,982, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed December 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY H. LASAR, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Barb-Wire Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a barb-wire machine having the improvement; Fig. 2, a similar elevation, the parts being as when the barb. is being compressed upon the strandwires; Fig. 3, an edge elevation; Fig. 4., a plan; Fig. 5, a view in perspective upon an enlarged scale, showing that one of the compressors which carries the knife; Fig. 6, a view in perspective of the opposing compressor; Fig. 7, a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 1. This section is in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the machine; Fig. 8, an elevation show ing a portion of one of the compressor-arms; Fig. 9, a similar elevation of the other compressor-arm; Fig. 10, a side elevation of that portion of the compressor-arm shown in Fig. 9, and Fig. 11 an elevation of the journal or bearing upon which the compressor-arms turn.
The last seven views are upon an enlarged scale.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
I have heretofore patented-April 1, 1884- as No. 296,190, an improvement in barb-wire machines. a portion of which improvement relates to the means for compressing the barb upon the strand-wires. The presentimprovement-is a modification of the means referred to, and in this: in the construction referred to the compressor-arms are pivoted to separate journals. In the present instance the two compressor-arms are pivoted to the same journal or bearing. This bearing is also made longitudinally adjustable, for the purpose of en= abling the compressors, as well as the knife, to be from time to time set closer to the end of the barrel. Theimprovement also has reference to the peculiar shape of the compressors.
In the drawings only that portion of a barbwire machine is shown which is essential to an understanding of the present improvement.
A represents the core of the machine.
B represents the barrel, and O the head, all
of which parts are constructed and operated in the usual manner.
DD represent what are termed the compressors. The compressor D and the knife E are held in the arm F, and the compressor D is held in the arm F. These arms are journaled side by side upon the journal or bearing G. This bearing, as well as the construction of the compressor-arms in the vicinity of the bearing, is shown more distinctly in Figs. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The arms are shaped as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and are provided with what may be termed the hubs f. The journal or bearing G is passed through the hubs, and a collar, H, is screwed onto the bearing G and fastened by a set-screw, h, and the journal is placed in the boxes I I, as Shown in the various figures, and especially in Fig. 7. By means of the setscrews JJ, working through the flanges K K, the journal G, carrying the compressor-arms, as described, can be adju ted longitudinally. The compressors are operated by means of the shaft L and cams M M, and the spring N, substantially in the manner described in a pending application, the rotation of the cams serving to move the compressors together, so as to bind the barb-wires upon the strandwires, and in the proper manner, substantially as described in the patent referred to, and the spring serving to keep the arms, through the rollers f, against the cams. The compressor D is shaped as shown in Fig. 5, being hollowed out at (1, below the region of the knife E, and, below the hollowed-out portion, being beveled at d. The other compressor, D, is beveled at d in its upper edge, below the bevel is shaped out at d, and toward its lower edge is notched, substantially as shown at d in Fig. 6. The notch serves to lead the barb-wire out from the barrel and guide it properly around the strand-wires, and the other described features of the compressors serve to compress the barb upon the strands. The journal G has a flange, g, for the hubs ffto bear against.
I claim 1. In a barb-wire machine, the compressorarms F F, carrying the compressors D D, respectively, and journaled upon the same journal or bearing, and operated by means of the shaft L, cams M M, and spring N. as described.
2. In combination with the barrel B, the
compressors D D and arms F F, adjustable and shaped out at d and beveled atd, in toward the barrel, for the purpose described. combination with the compressor D, hollowed 3. The combination of the arms F F, the out at d and beveled at d, as described.
compressors D D, the barrel B, the journal G, GODFREY H. LASAR. 5 the collar H, the flanges K K, and the set- Witnesses:
screws J J, as and for the purpose described. 0. D. MOODY, 4. The compressor D, having the notch 01, C. E. HUNT.
