(Cl. 2-22) This invention relates to a protective article of clothing and more particularly to trousers and the like adapted to protect the wearer from snake bits and like injuries.

A primary object of my invention is to provide trousers having a lining adapted to protect the wearer from snake bites.

Another object is to provide trousers of the character designated that are light-weight and comfortable to wear.

A further object of my invention is to provide trousers of the character designated that are easy to clean, attractive in appearance, and economical to manufacture.

In the following description of the construction and use of my invention, I shall make reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, illustrates features and embodiments of my invention, and in which:

FIG. 1 is a front view of trousers embodying my invention;

FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken generally along line 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken generally along line 3-3 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken generally along line 4-4 of FIG. 2 being drawn to full scale and illustrating a snakes head for comparative purposes;

FIG. 5 is an enlarged view partly broken away and in section further illustrating the details of construction; and,

FIG. 6 is a side view of another embodiment of my invention.

In a pair of trousers indicated generally at 10 I provide a lining 11 made of an expanded light-weight plastic material such as Styrofoam, that extends from the knee to the lower edge of the trousers. The lining is held within a pocket 12 formed by sewing a cloth lining 13 inside of the trousers. The lining 13 is in the form of a cylinder of cloth that is sewn to the trousers adjacent the knee portion as at 14 and to the lower edge of the trousers as at 16. An opening closed by a zipper 17 is provided in the trousers so that the plastic material may be removed when the trousers are cleaned or stored.

In FIG. 4 I illustrate the head 18 of a snake having fangs 19 in comparison with the lining material 11. I have found that a thickness of approximately /6 of an inch, as illustrated, will give adequate protection from the fangs of the most common posionous snakes.

In FIG. 6 I show another embodiment of my invention in which I provide leggings 1t) constructed in the same manner in which the trousers 10 are constructed from the knee down. I provide a strap 21 extending from the belt to the upper part of the leggings 10 to hold the leggings up. A zipper 17 is provided in the leggings to facilitate removal of the light-weight removable lining from the cloth lining for cleaning and also to make it easier to put the leggings on.

The inner lining is perforated as at 22 to provide ventilation and is therefore cool when worn. In the event a snake should strike a person wearing these trousers the fangs of the snake would strike the plastic inner lining 3,191,185 Patented June 29,1965

but would not pass therethrough and thus the person wearing the trousers is protected from the bite. An opening closed by a zipper 17 is provided in the trouser in order that the inner lining 11 may be removed easily when the trousers are to be cleaned.

A lower flap 23 may extend from the lower edge of the trousers to cover the shoe, and a protective cover made of the same material as the lining of the trousers may be provided in the shape of a shoe top to cover the shoe and be held in a plate by the flap 23 thus providing greater protection. A strap 26 may be attached adjacent the lower edges of the flap 23 and extend under the shoe, as shown, to hold the trousers down over the shoe to give the greatest amount of protection.

From the foregoing it is seen that I have devised a new and improved protective garment for outdoors wear which comprises a pair of trousers or the like 10 having a protective inner lining 11 extending around the leg below the knee. The trousers are economical to manufacture, attractive in appearance, light-weight and comfortable to wear, and provide the outdoorsman with good protection from snake bites.

While I have shown my invention in two forms, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. As a protective article of clothing, a leg enclosing garment comprising,

(a) an outer fabric cylinder,

(b) an inner fabric cylinder substantially concentric with said outer fabric cylinder and secured at its upper and lower ends to said outer cylinder,

(0) a lining made of an expanded lightweight plastic material of a thickness for preventing the ends of the fangs of common poisonous snakes penetrating therethrough and of a shape and size to fit snugly between said inner and outer fabric cylinders,

(d) there being an opening in said outer fabric cylinder of a size to permit removal and replacement of said lining, and

(e) fasteners positively to close said opening, thereby to hold the lining between said outer and inner fabric cylinders.

2. As a protective article of clothing a leg enclosing garment comprising,

(a) an outer fabric cylinder,

(b) an inner fabric cylinder substantially concentric with said outer fabric and being secured at its upper and lower ends to said outer cylinder,

(c) a lining made of an expanded light-weight plastic material of a thickness for preventing the ends of the fangs of common poisonous snakes pentrating therethrough and of a size to fit snugly between said inner and outer fabric cylinders, and

(d) there being an opening closable by a slide fastener in said outer fabric cylinder of a size to permit removal and replacement of said lining.

3. A protective article of clothing as defined in claim 2 in which a foot covering flap is continuous with and extends downwardly from said outer cloth cylinder.

4. Claims

1. AS A PROTECTIVE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING, A LEG ENCLOSING GARMENT COMPRISING, (A) AN OUTER FABRIC CYLINDER, (B) AN INNER FABRIC CYLINDER SUBSTANTIALLY CONCENTRIC WITH SAID OUTER FABRIC CYLINDER AND SECURED AT ITS UPPER AND LOWER ENDS TO SAID OUTER CYLINDER, (C) A LINING MADE OF AN EXPANDED LIGHTWEIGHT PLASTIC MATERIAL OF A THICKNESS FOR PREVENTING THE ENDS OF THE FANGS OF COMMON POISONOUS SNAKES PENETRATING THERETHROUGH AND OF A SHAPE AND SIZE TO FIT SNUGLY BETWEEN SAID INNER AND OUTER FABRIC CYLINDERS, (D) THERE BEING AN OPENING IN SAID OUTER FABRIC CYLINDER OF A SIZE TO PERMIT REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF SAID LINING, AND (E) FASTENERS POSITIVELY TO CLOSE SAID OPENING, THEREBY TO HOLD THE LINING BETWEEN SAID OUTER AND INNER FABRIC CYLINDERS.
