B. SOHLIMBAGH.
ALE AND BEER PUMP. Patented May 5, 1885.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD SOHLIMBAOH, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEYV YORK.
ALE AND BEER PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,214, dated May 5, 1885. Application filed December 18, 1884. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, EDWARD SCHLIMBAOH, of Astoria, Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ale and Beer Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional rear elevation of one of my improved pumps. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line as 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in operating ale and beer pumps, and to promote convenience and reliability in packing the piston-rods and the valve-stems of pumps.
The inventionrelates to an ale and beer pump constructed with the pump piston-rod operated by means of two curved levers connected with each other by a rod, whereby the pump can be operated by moving the leverhandle through a short arc. W'ith the pump discharge-pipe is connected a cylinder provided with a valve the stem of which is connected with the pump-lever by a lever and connecting-rod, whereby the said valve will be opened and closed by operating the said pump-lever. The piston-rod and valve-stem are packed by placing upon them rubber tubes secured to them and their cylinders, whereby the liquid is kept from escaping around the said rod and stem, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
A represents a pipe leading from the cask or other reservoir from which a liquid is to be pumped to the lower end of the pump-cylinder B. The upper end of the pipe A is closed by a valve, G, opening upward,to prevent the liquid from being forced back into the said pipe.
D is the pump-piston, with one or more valves,
which is provided E, opening upward,
to allow the liquid to pass up through the piston as the said piston is moved downward, and
to cause the said piston to force upward in its up ward movement the liquid that may be above it. The piston-rod F passes out through the upper head of the pump-cylinder B, and
is packed to prevent the liquid from escaping 5 5 around it by a rubber tube, G, through which the said piston-rod F passes. The upper end of the rubber tube G is attached to a boss, H, formed upon the inner side of the upper head of the cylinder B, and through which the pis- 6o tonrod F passes, and its lower end is attached to a boss, I, formed upon the upper side of the piston D, and to which the lower end of the piston-rod F is pivoted, so that the liquid in the pump cannot come in contact with the said 6 5 piston-rod. The upper end of the piston-rod F is connected by a pivoted link or bar, J, with the forward end of a lever, K, which is pivoted to a cross-bar of the frame L, to which the various parts of the pump are attached. The rear arm of the lever K is curved downward and rearward, and to its end is pivoted the lower end of a connecting-rod, M, the upper end of which is pivoted to the rear end of the lever N. The lever N is pivoted toa support attached to a cross-bar of the frame L, audits rear arm is curved upward and downward. 'The forward arm of theleverNis bent downward, forward, upward, forward, and downward, and has a handle, N, formed upon or attached So to its forward end, which projects through a slot in the casing inclosing the frame L. lVith this construction the lever N will require very little space, and the pump can be worked by moving the lever-handle N through a very short arc.
With the upper part of the pump-cylinder B is connected the end of the pipe 0, the other end of which is connected with a coolingchamber,1?, placed in an ice chamber or box, 0 Q, secured to the frame L. From the coolingchamber P a pipe, It, leads to and enters the upper part of the cylinder S, secured to the upper part of the frame L. The cylinder Sis made in two parts, the upper one of which is 9 5 made with a larger interior ,than the lower part, and is screwed into an annular screwfiange formed around the upper end of the said lower part.
Upon the upper end of the lower part of the 10'.
cylinder S is formed a seat for the valve T, which is made of a less diameter than the interior of the upper part of the said cylinder, so that when the said valve is raised from its seat the liquid from the upper part of the cylinder can flow down past the said valve. The valve T is held down to its seat bya spiral or other shaped spring, U, and the stem V of the said valve passes out through the lower head of the said cylinder S. The valve-stem V is packed to prevent the fluid from escaping around it by a rubber tube, WV, through which the said valve-stem passes. The upper end of the tube W is secured to a base, X, formed upon the lower head of the cylinder S, and the lower end of the said tube is secured to the valve-stem V at or near the lower end of the said valve-stem.
To the lower end of the valve-stem V is pivoted the end of the lever Y, which is pivoted to the frame L, or to a support attached to the said frame. To the other end of the lever Y is pivoted the lower end of the connecting-rod -Z, the upper end of which is pivoted to the lever N at a little distance in the rear of the fulcrum of the said lever. 7
With the lower part of the valve-cylinder S connected the end of a discharge-pipe, a,
having a nozzle at its outer end. XVith this construction no faucet will be necessary, as the valve T will be opened and closed by the movements of the levers N in operating the pump, the said valve being opened each time the pump-piston is raised to force out the liquid, and closed each time the said piston is lowered for another stroke.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an ale and beer pump, the combination, with the pump piston-rod F, of the two curved levers K N and the connecting-rod M, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said pump can be operated by moving the lever-handle through a short are, as set forth.
2. In an ale and beer pump, the combination, with the pump discharge-pipe O R a and the pump bent lever N, of the cylinder S, the valve T, the valve-stem V, and the lever Y, and connecting-rod Y Z, substantially as herein shown and described.
