GINGRAS FOUNDATION GARMENT on THEPANTY GIRDLE TYPE Filed Aug. 10, 1962 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 Inventor Marcel GINGRAS Attorneys United States Patent 3,170,466 FOUNDATION GARMENT OF THE PANTY GIRDLE TYPE Marcel Gingras, St. Foy, Quebec, Canada, assignor to Dominion Corset Company, Limited, Quebec, Canada Filed Aug. 10, 1962, Ser. No. 216,146 Claims. (Cl. 128-528) This invention relates to foundations garments and particularly to panty type girdles in which the main body encircling portion of the garment provides controlled support and stretch in defined zones. for maximum comfort to the wearer.
The invention consists essentially of a body encircling garment formed of a number of layers of material superimposed on each other to provide reinforcement at desired locations and which are made of material whose texture and direction of stretch in relation to each other provides a variation of stretchability and pressure in the various zones of the garment defined by the superimposed layers. The outer layer of material constitutes the main body section of the garment and is stretchable is a horizontal direction. This layer is designed for overall normal support and provides a soft control at the top of the side sections of the garment and also in certain lower portions of the garment. The other two inner layers of material constitute vertically disposed reinforcements located at the sides of the garment and are Y shaped spreading to the front and rear of the garment. Each of these inner layers has a diamond shaped extension on the branch of the Y facing on the front of the garment and these diamond shaped extensions are adapted to overlap each other to provide with the covered portion of the outer layer of the garment a diamond shaped triple layer of reinforcement to provide the additional control to reduce or flatten the abdomen. The two inner layers are cut to provide a direction of stretch at an angleto the horizontal (approximately 25), in opposite directions to each other so that in the overlapped diamond shaped sections at the front of the garment the direction of stretch cross each other at an angle to the horizontal stretch of the overlying outer layer. The inner layers, including the diamond shaped extensions are stitched together along their edges to the outer layer to define the control zones of the garment.
The object of the invention is to provide a foundation garment having defined zones of varying strength and varying angles of direction of stretch.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foundation garment having superimposed layers of stretchable material cut and disposed to provide varying thickness of reinforcement at defined locations.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foundation garment in which the direction of stretch of superimposed layers cross each other to vary the strength and stretchability in defined zones.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of one embodiment of the invention and from the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front view of the foundation garment.
FIG. 2 is a rear view of the foundation garment.
FIG. 3 is a developed front view of the main body encircling portion of the garment in which portions thereof are broken away to expose the underlying layers.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 but showing the rear veiw of the main body encircling portion of the garment.
Referring to the drawings, the garment 5 illustrated is composed of a main body encircling member 6, a rear panel member 7 and a crotch member 8, and bounded by an elastic top band 9 and elastic leg encircling bands 10. A slide fastener 11 is also shown to facilitate in the fitting of the garment.
3,17%,465 Patented Feb. 23, 1965 The main body encircling member 6 is shown in greater detail in FIGS. 3 and 4 and is cut and shaped to form the desired contour of the garment when joined to the rear panel 7, crotch member 8 and bands 9 and 10.
The main body encircling member 6 is composed of a front member 12 cut to the full pattern of the member 6 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. This front panel is cut from material which is stretchable in a horizontal direction as indicated by the arrows 13.
"A pair of generally Y-shaped reinforcing side panels 14 and 15 are secured by stitching 16 to the rear surface of the front member 12 in the manner shown in FIG. 4. The side panel 14 is provided with a diamond shaped extension 17 projecting inwardly of the inner branch 14a of the Y-shaped panel 14. Similarly, the side panel 15 is provided with a diamond shaped extension 18 projecting inwardly of the inner branch 15a of the Y-shaped panel 15. The panel 14 is cut from material which is stretchable in the direction of the arrows 19, while the panel 15 is cut from material which is stretchable in the direction of the arrows 20.
The diamond shaped extensions 17 and 18 overlap each other on the vertical centre of the body encircling member 6 and are here shown in FIG. 4 with the extension 17 overlapping the extension 18, and are stitched together and to the front member 12 by the stitching 21 to form a three-ply diamond shaped reinforcing zone D.
The complete front member now presents a series of zones providing a difference in the degree of flexibility and stretchability and providing the desired degree of support in the various zones of the finished garment.
In the zones A bounded by the forks of the Y-shaped reinforcing panels 14 and 15 there is a single layer of material stretchable in a horizontal direction and providing the required softness above the hips. Similarly the zones B are of a single layer of material stretchable in a horizontal direction and providing the desired softness at the inner surfaces of the thighs.
The zones C defined by the Y-shaped panels 14 and 15 are of two thicknesses of material with the overlapped portions of the front panel 12 being stretchable in a horizontal direction and the material of the Y-shaped panels being stretchable at an angle to the horizontal with the stretch of the panels 14 and 15 being in opposite directions to each other. The zones C provide increased control, starting from top to bottom and reduce low lying bulges at the sides, in long and short panties. They also redistribute flesh and reduce and smooth down the hip lines.
The zone D defined by the diamond shaped extensions 17 and 18 is composed of three layers of material, the front member 12 stretchable in a horizontal direction, the extension 17 stretchable at an angle to the horizontal in the direction of the arrows 19, and the extension 18 stretchable at an angle to the horizontal in the direction of the arrows 20. This combination of materials and stretch supplies the additional control required to support, reduce or flatten the abdomen.
A garment as above described combines in its body encircling member the required degree of rigidity in designated areas for maximum support together with the degree of softness required in other areas. The combination of layers of material all being stretchable in different directions from each other provides for maximum comfort where required without detracting from the support provided by the superimposed layers.
What I claim is:
1. A foundation garment of the panty girdle type comprising three layers of material superimposed upon each other and stretchable in different directions from each other, a first outer layer of said three layers of material constituting the main body section of the garment and being stretchable in a horizontal direction, a second of a 7 said three layers of material constituting a pair of side supporting panels superimposed on said first layer at opposite side portions of the garment, the said side panels being stretchable at an angleto the horizontal and in opposite directions with respect to each other, each of said side panels having an extension member projecting therefrom in a direction towards and beyond the front medial line of the garment'and overlapping each otherand underlying portionsof the said first layer of material to form with the said first layer of material a three-layer reinforcing front panel member. p
