Description

Nov. 17, 1964 R. l.. slNcLAlR DISPLAY "RACK Filed Dec. 27, 1962 FIG. 2
FIG. 3
INVENTOR a Robe/" I .Snc/a/r l l iM/m United States Patent O 3,157,287 DISPLAY RACK Robert L. Sinclair, Dedham, Mass., assigner to The `Gillette Company, Boston, Mass., a csrporation of Deiaware Filed Dec. 27, 1962, Ser. No. 247,638 3 Claims. (Cl. 211-49) This invention comprises a new and improved rack for disp-laying safety razor sets or the like merchandise upon the counter or in the window of retail merchants where standing space is heavily occupied or otherwise limited. To this end a novel rack is herein shown as characterized by a flat compact base of limited area together with an upstanding rod rising from the base and a panel slidably engaged upon the rod. The panel has a shelf and a series of tongues arranged to hold detachably and in position of full visibility a substantial number of the articles to be displayed.
The panel has at its lower edge a forwardly extending shelf and at its upper edge a marginal rib and these are provided with aligned passages for the rod so that the rack may be conveniently dismantled for shipment and storage and as readily assembled for use. The panel itself has one or more rows of tongues spaced one above another and arranged to support slotted cases of razor sets at a forwardly inclined angle with the lowersmost case resting on the shelf.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings in which.:
FIG. 1 is a plan view partly in section on the line 1-1 of FIG. 2 of the display rack,
FIG. 2 is a view in front elevation, and
FIG. 3 is a View in side elevation partly in section on the line 3--3 of-FIG. 2.
The rack comprises a flat rectangular base of limited area but of sufficient weight to maintain the rack as a whole in stable upright position. The base is limited in area so as to occupy relatively small space on the counter while supporting a substantial display or articles in the area above the counter.
An upright rod 11 is provided with a rearwardly angled foot 12 and secured thereby to the rear portion of the base 10. The rod 11 is of stiff rib-bon formation being rectangular in cross section as shown in FIG. l and slightly rounded at its upper end. It is provided at an intermediate point substantially above the base with a forwardly extending stop 13 and this may be conveniently formed by extrusion of the rod material.
The rod 4is arranged to carry a rectangular panel 14 and this is provided at its lower edge with a forwardly extending shelf 15, side anges 16 and atop flange 17. The body of the panel is slightly olfset rearwardly with respect to the marginal flanges. The shelf at its inner end and the top marginal flange 17 are provided with aligned apertures shaped to receive the rod 11 in sliding engagement. In assembling the rack the rod is threaded through the aperture in the shelf 15 and the ange 17 and slipped down upon the rod until it is arrested by engagement with the stop 13. It will be seen that the panel is thus supported or suspended at a substantial distance above the base 10.
As herein shown the rack is designed to `display a collection of six safety razor sets each enclosed in a case 29 having a transparent cover and a bottom perforated to receive a correspondingly tongue 18 projecting from the face of the panel 14. The tongues 18 are arranged in parallel lines and are spaced vertically one above another. As shown in FIG. 3 they project outwardly at an angle of about 30 to the face of the panel and are forked for insertion in slots formed in the base of the case. The lowermost case in each row is arranged to rest on `the outer portion `of the shelf 15 at a forwardly inclined angle and the edge of the shelf is correspondingly inclined. The upper cases are therefore supported in succession at the same angle.
The panel 14 is extended upwardly and formed integrally with a plaque 19 which is serviceable for the display of price data or advertising matter. The passage in the top flange 17 permits the upper end of the rod y11 to pass upwardly a short distance in Contact with the rear surface of the plaque 19 and so hold it stify in upright position.
Having thus disclosed my invention and described in detail a preferred embodiment thereof I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A standup display rack comprising a flat base, an upright rod secured thereto and having a projecting stop at an intermediate point above the base, the space above said flat base being unobstructed except for said upstanding rod, and a rectangular panel in engagement with said stop so as to be supported in spaced relation with respect to said base and having a forwardly projecting shelf at its lower edge and -a marginal flange extending across its upper edge, said shelf and ange having aligned passages shaped to receive said rod in sliding engagement.
2. A stand-up display rack as described in claim 1, further characterized in that the panel is provided above the shelf and at least on one side of said rod with a series of vertically spaced horizontally disposed tonguesA for engaging correspondingly slotted cases of safety razor sets.
3. A stand-up display rack as described in claim 1, further characterized in that the lowermost tongue of the panel is spaced above the shelf of the rack in position to support the slotted ycase of a razor set at a forwardly inclined angle resting on the shelf.
