- FIG. 1 DEVICE FOR THE BAND OR WIRE DRIVE CONTROL IN MAGNETIC RECORDERS OR THE LIKE Filed Nov. 3, 1958 s Sheets-Sheet 1 FIG. 1
- One of the objects of the present invention is to provide in a magnetic recorder a device which, when actuated by the operator, will provide first a stopping of the feeding of the tape or wire, then movement of friction pads away from the recording head, and finally rewinding of the tape or wire.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a magnetic rewrder with an additional control which, when actuated by the operator, will sequentially provide a stopping of thefeed, a quick feed, and then rewinding of the tape or wire.
- the invention is substantially characterized by the fact that it comprises a maneuvering oscillating lever designed to operate upon the feeding means at the normal speed of themagnetic band (or wire) in such a manner that in one lever position there is obtained the separation of the feeding rolls and therefore the instantaneous stop of the band (or wire) and in another position both the separation of the feed rolls and the moving of the recording head pads away from the recording head and thereafter the quick band (or wire) feeding by means of the winding up roll.
- a maneuvering oscillating lever designed to operate upon the feeding means at the normal speed of themagnetic band (or wire) in such a manner that in one lever position there is obtained the separation of the feeding rolls and therefore the instantaneous stop of the band (or wire) and in another position both the separation of the feed rolls and the moving of the recording head pads away from the recording head and thereafter the quick band (or wire) feeding by means of the winding up roll.
- FIG. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of one embodiment of a magnetic recorder according to the present invention.
- FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a pair of pad carrying levers forming part of the structure of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. l'in the direction of the arrows;
- FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 44 of FIG. 1 in the direction the arrows;
- FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 1 in the direction of the arrows.
- the upper horizontal plate A of the frame of the device is shown in FIG. 1.
- the plateA carries a pair of stationary shafts'l and 2 on which loose rolls 3 and 4 are freely turnable, respectively.
- Roll '3 supports a sup ply spool SS and roll 4 a take-up spool TS, which spools are indicated in dash-dotted lines in FIG. 1.
- the roll 4 is in the form of a pulley, as described below, and acts through a frictionclutch also described below in connection with FIG. 5 on the take-up spool.
- This roll '6 which is thus driven by the shaft'5 'olf'the electric motor 3,028,111 Patented Apr. 3, 1962 in turn frictionally drives a fly wheel 8, the periphery of this fly wheel being in frictional contact with the roll 6.
- the roll 4 is driven by the fly wheel shaft 9 through a belt 10, the shaft '9 fixedly carrying a suitable pulley which cooperates with the belt 10, and the roll 4 itself being in the form of a pulley, as clearly shown in FIG. 5.
- the fly wheel 8 is fixed to the shaft 9 which is turnably supported by the plate A for free rotation about its axis through any suitable bearing arrangement.
- the shaft 9 has a portion extending above the pulley which cooperates with the belt 10, and this latter portion of the shaft 9 constitutes one feed roller.
- the feed of the tape (or wire) at normal speed results from the frictional cooperation between the feed roller shaft 9 and the freely turnable feed roller 11 which acts as a loose pressure roll.
- the band (or wire) passes and is nipped between the rolls 9 and 11, the loose roll 11 turning freely in the direction of arrow F (FIG. 1).
- This roll 11 is freely turnable on a shaft 12 which is carried by a lever 13 described below.
- the lever 13 which fixedly carries the shaft 12 on which the feed roll 11 is freely turnable is supported by a pivot pin 14 for turning movement about the axis of this pin 14, the latter being fixedly carried by and extending vertically from the plate A of the frame.
- the lever 13 is provided with an extension 13 which is also turnable on the pivot 14, and the lever 13 has an elongated arcua-te slot 17 through which a screw 16 passes into threaded engagement with the extension 13', so that a limited angular adjustment between the lever portion 13 and 13' is provided in this way.
- a spring 15 is hooked at one end onto the plate A and at its opposite end to a pin fixed to the lever 13', so that the lever 13, 13' is urged by the spring 15 to turn around the pivot pin 14 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, and thus the spring 15 urges the roll 11 toward the shaft 9.
- a rigid plate 22 is fixedly carried by and spaced over the plate A in parallel relation thereto, any suitable pins or the like fixing the plate 22 to the plate A in spaced parallel relation thereover, and it will be seen from FIG. 1 that the lever 13 extends between the plates A and 22, while the shaft 9 extends upwardly through the plate 22 to be located in engagement with the feed roller 11;.
- the belt 10 and the pulley which is fixed to the shaft 9 extend beneath the plate 22, while the feed roll 11 extends over the plate 22 into frictional engagement with the portion of the shaft 9 which extends above the plate 22.
- This plate 22 fixedly carries a pair of parallel pivot pins 249 and 2d, and these pivot pins pivotaliy support a pair of levers 19 and 19, respectively, which are shown most clearly in FIG. 2.
- the levers 19 and 19 cross over each other and respectively carry the pads 18 and 18.
- a pair of unillustrated springs act on the levers 19 and 19, respectively, to urge the pads or pressure means 13 and 13 against the recording head RH, schematically indicated in dash-dotted lines, so as to provide the braking action, the magnetic band passing between the pads and the recording head.
- the lever 19. has a portion 23' provided with a downwardly extending tooth 53 which passes downwardly through an aperture 23 formed in the plate 22, this tooth 53 being located beside the lever 13, as is shown most clearly in FIG. 3. It will be noted from FIG. 2 that the lever 19 has a shoulder-54 directed toward the lever 19, so
- the end of the extension 13' which is distant from the pivot pin 14 is provided with a downwardly extending projection 24 extending downwardly through an aperture 25 in the plate A.
- This structure is shown most clearly in FIG. 4.
- the projection 24 is provided on its right side, as viewed in FIG. 4, with an inclined edge which cooperates with a roller 26 supported for free turning movement by an arm of a rectangular frame 27.
- This rigid rectangular frame 27 is located just beneath and spaced from the plate A, and it is interconnected with the plate A by a pair of leaf springs 28 which are respectively fixed at their left ends to the underside of the plate A and which are respectively fixed at their right ends to the underside of the left arm of the rectangular frame 27.
- a push button 36 guided in any suitable bearing carried by the plate A for vertical movement and having a portion located beneath the frame A and fixedly carrying a projection 29 which extends over a portion of the frame '27, as indicated in FIG. 1.
- the frame 27 will be turned downwardly so that the roller 26 will act on the inclined edge of the projection 24 of the extension 13 to turn the lever 13, 13 as described above, and the leaf springs 28 not only return the frame 27 to its rest position, but also they act through the frame 27 on the projection 2% to maintain the button 30 in its upper rest position.
- This structure includes an upwardly directed car 50 fixed to the left end of the lever 13 as viewed in FIG. 1.
- a rod 31 is fixed to the ear t and this red 31 passes through an opening in an car 52 of a lever 33 which is supported for turning movement by a pivot pin 34 fixed to and extending upwardly from the plate A so that the lever 33- is supported intermediate its ends for turning movement about the pivot pin 34.
- the rod 31 fixedly carries a collar 51 which abuts against the ear 52 in the position of the parts shown in FIG.
- a coil spring 32 is coiled around the rod 31, this coil spring pressing with one of its ends against the car 52 and with its opposite end against a collar or snap ring fixedly carried by the rod 31 at its end distant from the ear 50.
- This lever 33 is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 35 with a lever 36 which is turnably connected with the roll 37 at the center thereof, this roll 37 being carried by the lever 36 over the roll 6 as well as over a portion of the lever 33 in the position of the parts shown in FIG. 1.
- a wire spring 38 is wound around the pivot pin 35, presses with one end against the pivot pin 34-, and with its opposite end against a pin fixedly carried by the lever 36, so that this spring 38 urges the lever 36 in a counter clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow M, shown in FIG. 1, and the spring 38 also cooperates with the lever 33 to urge the latter in the direction of the arrow L shown in FIG. 1.
- This roll 37 is thus maintained in frictional engagement with the roll 3 which turns in the direction of the arrow N, and in the position of the parts shown in FIG. 1 the roll 37 turns freely in the direction of the arrow P.
- the stationary shaft 2 fixedly carries a collar which supports the pulley 4 for free rotation thereon. If desired the collar 60 may be replaced by a suitable thrust hearing.
- a Washer 61 is located against the top surface of the pulley 4, and this washer 61 is freely turnable around the shaft 2.
- a spring 62 is coiled around the shaft 2 and presses downwardly on the washer 61, the top end of the spring 62 pressing against a plate 63 which is fixed to the lower side of an annular channel member 64 of substantially U-shaped cross section, as indicated in FIG. 5.
- the top surface of the annular channel member 64 is pressed by the spring 62 against the underside of a plate 65 which is also freely turnable on the shaft 2 while being constrained against axial movement with respect thereto by the collars 66 and 67 respectively fixed to the shaft 2 and respectively engaging the upper and lower faces of the plate 65 in the manner shown in FIG. 5.
- collars 66 and 67 it is possible to use suitable thrust bearings.
- This plate 65 carries at its top face fins 68 which are adapted to cooperate in a known way with slots in the spool so as to transmit the turning movement of the plate 65 to the spool which carries the tape or wire, and this spool has a much larger diameter than the pulley 4.
- an arm 69 is fixedly carried by the rectangular frame 27, extends upwardly therefrom through an aperture 40 in the plate A, and this arm 69 has a free end portion extending into the annular channel member 64 and rotatably supporting in the interior of the channel member 64 a roller 70.
- the parts 64 and 65 cooperate as a friction clutch also for the purpose of permitting the plate 65 to slip with respect to the channel member 64 due to the difference between the angular speed of the pulley 4 and the feed speeds of the tape provided by the elements 9 and 11.
- a suitable coating of friction material may be located at the bottom side of the plate 65 and the top side of the channel member 64.
- the button 30 when the button 30 is depressed by the operator four operations take place, namely, the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9 to stop the feed of the tape or wire, the pads 18 and 18 are moved away from the recording head, the friction clutch structure shown in FIG. 5 disconnects the drive to the take-up reel, and the structure shown at the left of FIG. 1 operates to place the 'roll 37 in engagement with the roll 39 as well as with the roll 3 to reverse the direction of the rotation of the latter, and thus a quick rewinding of the tape onto the spool driven by the roll 3 takes place when the button 30 is depressed.
- the force with which the pads 18 and 18' press the tape or wire against the recording head is greater than the force of the friction clutch derived from the spring 62, so that when the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9 the feeding of the tape will stop immediately, the tape being held by the pressure of the pads 18 and 18 against the recording head, and the channel member 64 simply slips with respect to the plate 65 at this time. Therefore, the drive from the pulley 4 cannot continue to feed the tape after the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9, and the disengagement of the friction clutch of FIG.
- lever 41 which is shown at the left of FIG. 1.
- This lever 41 is manually turnable by the operator, and for this purpose the lever 41 has a handle 43 which is accessible to the operator.
- the lever 41 is located beneath the lever 13 between the latter and the plate A, and it is supported for turning movement by a pivot pin 42 fixed to and extending upwardly from the plate A through a suitable opening in the lever 41.
- a wire spring 44 is coiled around the pivot pin 42 and presses with one end against a pin 41' fixedly carried by the lever 41 so as to urge the lever 41 in the direction of the arrow Q shown in FIG. 1.
- This wire spring 44 also bears against the pivot pin 34 as shown in FIG. 1.
- the lever 41 At its right end the lever 41 carries an upwardly directed car 45 which extends up to and slightly beyond the elevation of the lever 13, so that when the operator turns the lever 41 in a direction opposite to the arrow Q, the ear 45 will en- 'gage the lever 13 to turn the latter around the pivot pin 14 in opposition to the spring 15.
- the lever 41 At its opposite end the lever 41 has an end portion 46 located at the elevation at the left end of the lever 33 below the collar 51. In other words the end 46 of the lever 41 is located in the path of movement of the lower end portion of the ear 52 beneath the collar 51.
- the take-up reel driven from the pulley '4 continues to turn under the drive from the belt 10 and through the friction clutch structure shown in FIG. 5, and thus the tape is very rapidly advanced at this time.
- the diameter of the take-up reel is so much greater than the pulley 4 that the peripheral speed of the tape wound onto the take-up reel is much greater than the feed speed provided by the rolls 9 and 11, so that the tape is very quickly advanced at this time, and in this way it is possible by turning up the lever 41 to very quickly advance the tape up to a desired extent.
- the end portion 46 of the lever 41 is at an elevation lower than the collar 51, but the entire lever 41 is at an elevation higher than the lever 33. Therefore, while the end 46 of the lever 41 is capable of engaging the car 52 to block turning of the lever 33, when the lever 41 is turned so as to locate the end 46 thereof to the right of the ear 52, as viewed in FIGS. 1 and 6, the lever 33 can turn freely beneath the lever 41 in order to place the roll 37 in engagement with the roll 39.
- the extension 13' fixedly carries a bracket 71 shown in FIGS. 1 and 5, this bracket 71 having a portion extending over the pulley 4 and having an ear 72 which fixedly carries a shaft 73 which is inclined upwardly to the left, as viewed in FIG. 5, and this shaft turnably supports a roller 74 restrained by suitable collars on the shaft 73 from axial movement along the shaft 73.
- the structure carried by the extension 13 is such that when the lever '41 has been 7 turned through an angle sufiicient to locate its end 46 to the right beyond the ear 52, as viewed in FIGS.
- the lever 13, 13 will have been turned through an angle sufficient to place the roller 74- in engagement with the annular channel member 64, and the inward movement of the roller 74- toward the ads of the shaft 2 causes the channel member 64 to be depressed against the action of the spring 62, so that in this way the friction clutch is also disengaged by turning of the lever 41.
- the shaft 73 is located in a vertical plane which passes radially through the axis of the shaft 2, and the distance of the roller 74 from the member 64 is such that the latter will not be moved away from the plate 65 until after the end 46 of the lever 41 has moved to the right beyond the ear 52.
- the friction clutch is disengaged by the structure carried by the extension 13, and the tape can be quickly rewound.
- a pair of feed rolls one of which has an active position relatively close to the other feed roll to cooperate therewith for feeding a band or wire and an inactive position displaced from said other feed roll to prevent cooperation between said feed rolls; a pair of pressure means having an active position pressing the band or wire against a recording head and an inactive position displaced from said active position to prevent said pressure means from pressing the band or wire against the recording head; supply roll means for supporting and turning a supply spool, said supply roll means rotating in an unwinding direction during feeding of a tape or wire from a supply spool to the pressure means and feed rolls and rotating in a rewinding direction opposite to said unwinding direction during rewinding of the tape or wire onto the supply spool; rewind turning means having an inactive position displaced from said supply roll means and an active position cooperating with said supply roll means for rotating the latter in said re winding direction; and common moving means cooperating with said one feed roll, said pressure means, and said rewind turning means for first

INVENTORS mn' g BY cam A. be S frr'kzr United States Patent 3,028,111 I DEVICE FOR THE BAND R WIRE DRIVE CON- TROL IN MAGNETIC RECORDERS OR THE LIKE Giovanni Geloso, Viale Brenta 29, and Amiga Castelli, Aeroporto Forlanini, both of Milan, Italy Filed Nov. 3, 1958, Ser. No. 771,270 Claims priority, application "Italy Feb. 9, 1956 13 Claims. (Cl. 242-5512) The present invention relates to a device for the control of band or wire magnetic recorders and the like.
This application is a continuation in part of copending application Serial No. 637,926, filed February 4, 1957, and now abandoned and entitled Device for the Band or Wire Drive Control in Magnetic Recorders or the Like.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide in a magnetic recorder a device which, when actuated by the operator, will provide first a stopping of the feeding of the tape or wire, then movement of friction pads away from the recording head, and finally rewinding of the tape or wire.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a magnetic rewrder with an additional control which, when actuated by the operator, will sequentially provide a stopping of thefeed, a quick feed, and then rewinding of the tape or wire.
The invention is substantially characterized by the fact that it comprises a maneuvering oscillating lever designed to operate upon the feeding means at the normal speed of themagnetic band (or wire) in such a manner that in one lever position there is obtained the separation of the feeding rolls and therefore the instantaneous stop of the band (or wire) and in another position both the separation of the feed rolls and the moving of the recording head pads away from the recording head and thereafter the quick band (or wire) feeding by means of the winding up roll.
The novelfeatures which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular'in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments When read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of one embodiment of a magnetic recorder according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a pair of pad carrying levers forming part of the structure of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. l'in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 44 of FIG. 1 in the direction the arrows; and
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 1 in the direction of the arrows.
The upper horizontal plate A of the frame of the device is shown in FIG. 1. The plateA carries a pair of stationary shafts'l and 2 on which loose rolls 3 and 4 are freely turnable, respectively. Roll '3 supports a sup ply spool SS and roll 4 a take-up spool TS, which spools are indicated in dash-dotted lines in FIG. 1. Actually, the roll 4 is in the form of a pulley, as described below, and acts through a frictionclutch also described below in connection with FIG. 5 on the take-up spool.
An unillustra-ted electric driving inotor has its shaft 5 (-FIG. 1) pressing frictionally against a periphery of a loose roll =6 supported for free turning movement by the stationary shaft '7 carried by the plate 'A. This roll '6 which is thus driven by the shaft'5 'olf'the electric motor 3,028,111 Patented Apr. 3, 1962 in turn frictionally drives a fly wheel 8, the periphery of this fly wheel being in frictional contact with the roll 6. The roll 4 is driven by the fly wheel shaft 9 through a belt 10, the shaft '9 fixedly carrying a suitable pulley which cooperates with the belt 10, and the roll 4 itself being in the form of a pulley, as clearly shown in FIG. 5. The fly wheel 8 is fixed to the shaft 9 which is turnably supported by the plate A for free rotation about its axis through any suitable bearing arrangement.
The directions of rotation of the parts 5, 6, 8 and 4 are indicated by the arroows B, C, D, E, respectively.
The shaft 9 has a portion extending above the pulley which cooperates with the belt 10, and this latter portion of the shaft 9 constitutes one feed roller. The feed of the tape (or wire) at normal speed results from the frictional cooperation between the feed roller shaft 9 and the freely turnable feed roller 11 which acts as a loose pressure roll. The band (or wire) passes and is nipped between the rolls 9 and 11, the loose roll 11 turning freely in the direction of arrow F (FIG. 1). This roll 11 is freely turnable on a shaft 12 which is carried by a lever 13 described below.
Between the roll 4 and the take-up spool there is a friction clutch arrangement shown in FIG. '5 and described below, and this friction clutch arrangement compensates for speed difierences between the roll 4 and the take-up spool.
The lever 13 which fixedly carries the shaft 12 on which the feed roll 11 is freely turnable is supported by a pivot pin 14 for turning movement about the axis of this pin 14, the latter being fixedly carried by and extending vertically from the plate A of the frame. The lever 13 is provided with an extension 13 which is also turnable on the pivot 14, and the lever 13 has an elongated arcua-te slot 17 through which a screw 16 passes into threaded engagement with the extension 13', so that a limited angular adjustment between the lever portion 13 and 13' is provided in this way. A spring 15 is hooked at one end onto the plate A and at its opposite end to a pin fixed to the lever 13', so that the lever 13, 13' is urged by the spring 15 to turn around the pivot pin 14 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, and thus the spring 15 urges the roll 11 toward the shaft 9.
A rigid plate 22 is fixedly carried by and spaced over the plate A in parallel relation thereto, any suitable pins or the like fixing the plate 22 to the plate A in spaced parallel relation thereover, and it will be seen from FIG. 1 that the lever 13 extends between the plates A and 22, while the shaft 9 extends upwardly through the plate 22 to be located in engagement with the feed roller 11;. The belt 10 and the pulley which is fixed to the shaft 9 extend beneath the plate 22, while the feed roll 11 extends over the plate 22 into frictional engagement with the portion of the shaft 9 which extends above the plate 22. This plate 22 fixedly carries a pair of parallel pivot pins 249 and 2d, and these pivot pins pivotaliy support a pair of levers 19 and 19, respectively, which are shown most clearly in FIG. 2. As is evident from FIG. 2, the levers 19 and 19 cross over each other and respectively carry the pads 18 and 18. A pair of unillustrated springs act on the levers 19 and 19, respectively, to urge the pads or pressure means 13 and 13 against the recording head RH, schematically indicated in dash-dotted lines, so as to provide the braking action, the magnetic band passing between the pads and the recording head. The lever 19. has a portion 23' provided with a downwardly extending tooth 53 which passes downwardly through an aperture 23 formed in the plate 22, this tooth 53 being located beside the lever 13, as is shown most clearly in FIG. 3. It will be noted from FIG. 2 that the lever 19 has a shoulder-54 directed toward the lever 19, so
that when the lever 19' is turned in a clockwise direction, so that the pad 18' approaches the viewer of FIG. 2, the shoulder 54 will engage the lever 1 to turn the latter in a counter clockwise direction, and in this way the pads 18 and 18' will simultaneously be moved away from the recording head upon such turning of the lever 19. As will be pointed out below, when the lever 13 turns in a counter clockwise direction, as viewed in PiG. 1, around the pivot pin 14, this lever 13 will engage the'tooth 53 so as to turn both of the levers 19 and 19 in the manner described above, and in this way both of the pads 18 and 18' are moved simultaneously away from the recording head.
The end of the extension 13' which is distant from the pivot pin 14 is provided with a downwardly extending projection 24 extending downwardly through an aperture 25 in the plate A. This structure is shown most clearly in FIG. 4. Thus, as may be seen in FIG. 4, the projection 24 is provided on its right side, as viewed in FIG. 4, with an inclined edge which cooperates with a roller 26 supported for free turning movement by an arm of a rectangular frame 27. This rigid rectangular frame 27 is located just beneath and spaced from the plate A, and it is interconnected with the plate A by a pair of leaf springs 28 which are respectively fixed at their left ends to the underside of the plate A and which are respectively fixed at their right ends to the underside of the left arm of the rectangular frame 27. These springs 28 urge the frame 27 upwardly about a substantially horizontal axis located adjacent the left side of the frame 27, as viewed in FIG. 1. Thus, when this frame 27 is turned downwardly in a manner described below, the roller 26 will engage the inclined right edge of the projection 24, as viewed in FIG. 4, to turn the lever 13, 13 in a counter clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, around the pivot pin 14 against the force of the spring 15.
At the right side of the frame 27, as viewed in FIG. 1, is located a push button 36 guided in any suitable bearing carried by the plate A for vertical movement and having a portion located beneath the frame A and fixedly carrying a projection 29 which extends over a portion of the frame '27, as indicated in FIG. 1. Thus, when the operator depresses the push button 36, the frame 27 will be turned downwardly so that the roller 26 will act on the inclined edge of the projection 24 of the extension 13 to turn the lever 13, 13 as described above, and the leaf springs 28 not only return the frame 27 to its rest position, but also they act through the frame 27 on the projection 2% to maintain the button 30 in its upper rest position.
Thus, when the operator depresses the button 30 the frame 27 will turn downwardly about a substantially horizontal axis adjacent its left side, as viewed in FIG. 1, and the roller 26 will cooperate with element 24 to turn the lever means or common operating means 13, 13 in a counter clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1. During the first part of this turning movement of the lever 13, 13 the roll 11 moves away from the shaft 9 so that the tape (or wire) is no longer nipped between the rolls 9 and 11 and the feeding of the tape by these rolls ceases. Then, during the next part of the turning of the lever 13, 13 the lever 13 engages the tooth 53 so as to act on the levers 19 and 19 in the manner described above in order to move the pads 13 and 18' away from the recording head, the levers 19 and 19 moving in a direction opposite from that indicated by the arrows H and H shown in FIG. 2.
At the same time structure which cooperates with the left free end of the lever 13, as viewed in FIG. 1, is operated by the turning of the lever 13. This structure includes an upwardly directed car 50 fixed to the left end of the lever 13 as viewed in FIG. 1. A rod 31 is fixed to the ear t and this red 31 passes through an opening in an car 52 of a lever 33 which is supported for turning movement by a pivot pin 34 fixed to and extending upwardly from the plate A so that the lever 33- is supported intermediate its ends for turning movement about the pivot pin 34. The rod 31 fixedly carries a collar 51 which abuts against the ear 52 in the position of the parts shown in FIG. 1, and on the side of the ear 52 opposite the collar 51 a coil spring 32 is coiled around the rod 31, this coil spring pressing with one of its ends against the car 52 and with its opposite end against a collar or snap ring fixedly carried by the rod 31 at its end distant from the ear 50.
This lever 33 is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 35 with a lever 36 which is turnably connected with the roll 37 at the center thereof, this roll 37 being carried by the lever 36 over the roll 6 as well as over a portion of the lever 33 in the position of the parts shown in FIG. 1. A wire spring 38 is wound around the pivot pin 35, presses with one end against the pivot pin 34-, and with its opposite end against a pin fixedly carried by the lever 36, so that this spring 38 urges the lever 36 in a counter clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow M, shown in FIG. 1, and the spring 38 also cooperates with the lever 33 to urge the latter in the direction of the arrow L shown in FIG. 1. This roll 37 is thus maintained in frictional engagement with the roll 3 which turns in the direction of the arrow N, and in the position of the parts shown in FIG. 1 the roll 37 turns freely in the direction of the arrow P.
Thus, when the lever 13 is turned in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, about pivot pin 14 in the manner described above, the car 50 will pull on the rod 31 so as to compress the spring 32, and the result is that the lever 33 turns in the direction opposite to the arrow L so that the roll 37 is moved into the gap between the rolls 3 and 39. This roll 39 is fixed to the roll 6 for turning movement therewith, and the diameter of the roll 37 is longer than the distance between the rolls 3 and 39, so
that when the lever 13 has been turned through a sufficient distance the roll 37 will be pressed against the rolls 3 and 39, and in this way the direction of rotation of the roll 3 will be reversed so that it turns in a direction opposite to the arrow N,-and in this way the tape (or wire) will be rewound.
Of course, it is necessary to disconnect the drive from the roll 4 to the reel which is turned by the roll 4, and this disconnection of the drive is simultaneously brought glioGut by the structure which is shown most clearly in Referring now to FIG. 5, it will be seen that the stationary shaft 2 fixedly carries a collar which supports the pulley 4 for free rotation thereon. If desired the collar 60 may be replaced by a suitable thrust hearing. A Washer 61 is located against the top surface of the pulley 4, and this washer 61 is freely turnable around the shaft 2. A spring 62 is coiled around the shaft 2 and presses downwardly on the washer 61, the top end of the spring 62 pressing against a plate 63 which is fixed to the lower side of an annular channel member 64 of substantially U-shaped cross section, as indicated in FIG. 5. The top surface of the annular channel member 64 is pressed by the spring 62 against the underside of a plate 65 which is also freely turnable on the shaft 2 while being constrained against axial movement with respect thereto by the collars 66 and 67 respectively fixed to the shaft 2 and respectively engaging the upper and lower faces of the plate 65 in the manner shown in FIG. 5. Instead of collars 66 and 67 it is possible to use suitable thrust bearings. This plate 65 carries at its top face fins 68 which are adapted to cooperate in a known way with slots in the spool so as to transmit the turning movement of the plate 65 to the spool which carries the tape or wire, and this spool has a much larger diameter than the pulley 4. In addition, an arm 69 is fixedly carried by the rectangular frame 27, extends upwardly therefrom through an aperture 40 in the plate A, and this arm 69 has a free end portion extending into the annular channel member 64 and rotatably supporting in the interior of the channel member 64 a roller 70. Thus, when the frame 27 is at rest the roller 70 will be out of engagement with the channel member 64 although located in the interior thereof, as indicated in FIG. 5, and at this time the friction clutch structure of FIG. will transmit the turning movement of the pulley 4 to the plate 65 so that a reel carried by the latter will turn with the plate 65. However, when the button 30 is depressed so as to turn the frame 27 downwardly, the roller 70 will engage the channel member 64 so as to move the latter downwardly against the force of the spring 62 so as to compress the latter beyond the position thereof shown in FIG. 5, and as a result the channel member 64 will move out of engagement with the plate 65 and the turning movement of the pulley 4 will no longer be transmitted to the plate 65. It should be noted that the parts 64 and 65 cooperate as a friction clutch also for the purpose of permitting the plate 65 to slip with respect to the channel member 64 due to the difference between the angular speed of the pulley 4 and the feed speeds of the tape provided by the elements 9 and 11. If desired, a suitable coating of friction material may be located at the bottom side of the plate 65 and the top side of the channel member 64.
Therefore, when the button 30 is depressed by the operator four operations take place, namely, the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9 to stop the feed of the tape or wire, the pads 18 and 18 are moved away from the recording head, the friction clutch structure shown in FIG. It should be noted that the force with which the pads 18 and 18' press the tape or wire against the recording head is greater than the force of the friction clutch derived from the spring 62, so that when the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9 the feeding of the tape will stop immediately, the tape being held by the pressure of the pads 18 and 18 against the recording head, and the channel member 64 simply slips with respect to the plate 65 at this time. Therefore, the drive from the pulley 4 cannot continue to feed the tape after the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9, and the disengagement of the friction clutch of FIG. 5 takes place simultaneously with the movement of the pads 13 and 18 away from the recording head, so that when the roll 37 transmits the drive from the roll 39 to the roll 3 to reverse the direction of rotation of the latter, the tape will be unwound from the take-up reel back onto the supply reel without any resistance.
It is also possible with the structure of the invention to turn the lever 13, 13' in a direction opposite to the arrow G shown in FIG. 1 with a lever 41 which is shown at the left of FIG. 1. This lever 41 is manually turnable by the operator, and for this purpose the lever 41 has a handle 43 which is accessible to the operator. The lever 41 is located beneath the lever 13 between the latter and the plate A, and it is supported for turning movement by a pivot pin 42 fixed to and extending upwardly from the plate A through a suitable opening in the lever 41. A wire spring 44 is coiled around the pivot pin 42 and presses with one end against a pin 41' fixedly carried by the lever 41 so as to urge the lever 41 in the direction of the arrow Q shown in FIG. 1. This wire spring 44 also bears against the pivot pin 34 as shown in FIG. 1. Thus, when the lever 41 is in its rest position it is maintained by the spring 44 in the position shown in FIG. 1. At its right end the lever 41 carries an upwardly directed car 45 which extends up to and slightly beyond the elevation of the lever 13, so that when the operator turns the lever 41 in a direction opposite to the arrow Q, the ear 45 will en- 'gage the lever 13 to turn the latter around the pivot pin 14 in opposition to the spring 15. At its opposite end the lever 41 has an end portion 46 located at the elevation at the left end of the lever 33 below the collar 51. In other words the end 46 of the lever 41 is located in the path of movement of the lower end portion of the ear 52 beneath the collar 51.
When the operator turns the lever 41 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, the end 45 of the lever 41 will first engage the lever 13 so as to turn the latter first to a position where the roll 11 is disengaged from the roll 9, and thus the feeding of the tape or wire stops immediately at this point. It should be noted that at this time the lever 13 has not been turned through a distance sufiicient to cause the pads 18 and 18 to move away from the recording head, so that these pads frictionally hold the tape against the recording head with a force greater than that of the friction clutch as described above in connection with FIG. 5, so that the feeding stops immediately. Thus, it is possible to turn the lever 41 through a first angle which will simply cause the tape or wire to stop immediately.
During the second portion of the turning of the lever 13 by manual turning of the lever 41, the pads 18 and 18' will be moved away from the recording head, in the above described manner. At this time the end portion 46 of the lever 41 will be located in the path of movement of the lever 33, so that although the rod 31 together with the collar 51 move away from the ear 52 to compress the spring 32, the lever 33 and the ear 52 cannot turn around the pivot 35 because of the engagement between the ear 52 with the end '46 of the lever 41, and thus at this time the roll 11 is moved away from the roll 9, the pads 18 and 18' are moved away from the recording head, but the roll 37 cannot move under the action of the spring 32 into engagement with the roll 39 so as to reverse the direction of rotation of the roll 3. Therefore, at this time the take-up reel driven from the pulley '4 continues to turn under the drive from the belt 10 and through the friction clutch structure shown in FIG. 5, and thus the tape is very rapidly advanced at this time. The diameter of the take-up reel is so much greater than the pulley 4 that the peripheral speed of the tape wound onto the take-up reel is much greater than the feed speed provided by the rolls 9 and 11, so that the tape is very quickly advanced at this time, and in this way it is possible by turning up the lever 41 to very quickly advance the tape up to a desired extent.
If the lever 41 is turned further in a clockwise direction, as viewed in FIG. 1, beyond the position where this lever 41 has its end 46 blocking the turning of the lever 33, then the end 46 will move to the right, as viewed in FIG. 1 beyond the ear 52, and the spring 32 will now be able to turn the lever 33 so as to place the roll 37 in engagement with the roll 39 to reverse the direction of rotation of the roll 3 so as to bring about rewinding of the tape.
As may be seen from FIG. 6', the end portion 46 of the lever 41 is at an elevation lower than the collar 51, but the entire lever 41 is at an elevation higher than the lever 33.
Of course, it is also necessary at this time to disengage the friction clutch of FIG. 5. For this purpose the extension 13' fixedly carries a bracket 71 shown in FIGS. The structure carried by the extension 13 is such that when the lever '41 has been 7 turned through an angle sufiicient to locate its end 46 to the right beyond the ear 52, as viewed in FIGS. 1 and 6, the lever 13, 13 will have been turned through an angle sufficient to place the roller 74- in engagement with the annular channel member 64, and the inward movement of the roller 74- toward the ads of the shaft 2 causes the channel member 64 to be depressed against the action of the spring 62, so that in this way the friction clutch is also disengaged by turning of the lever 41. When the roller 74 is in engagement with the channel member 64 the shaft 73 is located in a vertical plane which passes radially through the axis of the shaft 2, and the distance of the roller 74 from the member 64 is such that the latter will not be moved away from the plate 65 until after the end 46 of the lever 41 has moved to the right beyond the ear 52. Thus, when the roller 37 engages the roller 39 the friction clutch is disengaged by the structure carried by the extension 13, and the tape can be quickly rewound.
Summing up, with the lever 41 there are four possible positions. There is the rest position shown in FIG. 1. There is also the first position where the turning of the lever 41 simply causes the roll 11 to move away from the shaft 9 so as to stop the feed of the tape. Then there is the second position where the end 46 of the lever 41 blocks the turning of the lever 33 while the pads 18 and 18 are out of engagement with the recording head, so that the tape can be very quickly advanced. And finally there is the position where the tape is quickly rewound. Of course, whenever the operator desires simply to rewind the tape, then this is very easily brought about by depression of the button 30 to produce the abovedescribed operations.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of recorders differing from the types described above.
