No. 845,951 2 Claims. (Cl. 2-495) This invention relates to a method for attaching a covering to a shako and to the article thereby formed.

Shakos are well known in the art and a method of making shakos of plastic material is described in my prior Patent 2,829,376. In that patent there is also disclosed a method for covering the shako with flocking and the like. This method has proved quite successful and has been used extensively. However, it has been found desirable to cover a shako, particularly the top with plastic and to provide such a covering in a manner that the material is tightly engaged on the shako and so that no seams are visible.

According to the present invention there is provided a shako which has an integrally formed plastic top and side wall construction. A plastic covering is provided for the shako by cutting plastic material to the size of the top of the shako and stitching a skirt of cloth or other suitable material to the periphery of this plastic covering. There is also stitched to the periphery of the covering a plastic marginal trim strip which is secured in overlapping relation to the skirt. The depending skirt is pulled over the side wall of the shako and stitched thereto directly through the shako. The marginal trim member is then pulled down over this stitching so as to hide the stitching from view. In this manner there is provided a plastic covering which is tightly secured to the shako and in which a marginal trim portion is secured thereover so as to provide a smooth unbroken external appearance.

An object of the present invention is to provide a method for covering a shako.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a covering for a shako in which no stitching is visible.

Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will become apparent upon consideration of the following detailed specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a shako with the top covering stitched thereon and with a portion of the trim member in position covering this stitching,

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the completed shako, and

FIG. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.

Referring now more specifically to the drawing wherein like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, there is shown at 1 in FIG. 1 a shako having a visor 2 integrally formed therewith or separately attached thereto. The shako comprises an integral side and top wall construction which may most suitably be made of a plastic material.

As brought out in my previous patent, hereinbefore referred to, this shako may be covered with a flocking. However, it may also be desirable to cover the shako with a plastic material for decorative purposes. The present invention relates to a specific manner in which the top of the shako may be covered with a plastic, and a trim strip provided around the upper edge of the shako in order to cover the stitching.

There is pmvided a plastic top member 5 which is cut to approximately the size of the top of the shako. Stitched to the peri heral edge of the member 5 is the skirt 6 which may be a cotton fabric or the like. Also stitched to the member 5 is a plastic trim member 7 which may, if desired, be of a. difierent color than the top member.

The skirt 6 is pulled down over the top of the shako so that the top member 5 is snugly fit over the top of the shako. The skirt is then stitched as at 8 to the shako body. The trim member may then be pulled down over the shako side wall so as to cover the skirt stitching. In FIG. 1 a portion of the trim is shown in its final position and a portion is shown before it is pulled down over the skirt stitching.

It can be seen that there is provided a method of covering the top of a shako with a decorative material which is simple, economical and highly ornamental. All of the stitching is hidden from view and the covering is tightly held on the shako body.

What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

l. A shako top covering comprising, in combination, a shako covering having a skirt attached to the periphery thereof, stitches securing said skirt to the shako, a marginal trim overlapping said skirt and stitched to the shako covering, said marginal trim extending over the skirt stitching whereby a top covering and marginal trim for the shako is provided.

2. In a head covering of the class described comprising, a shako, a top covering for said shako, said top covering having a skirt stitched thereto, stitches securing said skirt to said shako, a marginal trim secured to said top covering, said marginal extending over sa d skirt whereby all of the stitching is hidden from view.
